7、He was 50 years old when I was born, and a "Mr. Mom" long before anyone had a name for it. I didn't know why he was home instead of Mom, but I was young and the only one of my friends who had their dads around. I considered myself very lucky.

Dad did so many things for me during my grade-school years. He asked the school bus driver to pick me up at my house instead of the usual bus stop that was six blocks away. He always had my lunch ready for me when I came home----usually a peanut butter and sandwich that was shaped for the season. My favorite was at Christmas. The sandwiches would be covered with green sugar and cut in the shape of a tree.

As I got a little older and tried to gain my independence, I wanted to move away from those "childish" signs of his love. But he wasn't going to give up. In high school and no longer able to go home for lunch, I began taking my own. Dad would get up a little earlier and make it for me. I never knew what to expect. The outside of the bag might be covered with his way of a mountain scene (it became his trademark)or a heart with the word "Dad-n-Angle" in its center. Inside there would be a note with that same heart or an “I love you”. Many times he would write a joke or a riddle. He always had some silly saying to make me smile and let me know that he loved me.

I used to hide my lunch so no one would see the bag or read the note, but that didn't last long. One of my friends saw the note one day, caught it, and passed it around the lunch room. My face burned. To my astonishment, the next day all my friends were waiting to see the note. From the way they acted, I think they all wished they had someone who showed them that kind of love. I was so proud to have him as my father. Throughout the rest of my high school years, I received those notes, and still have a majority of them.

And still it didn't end. When I left home for college(the last one to leave), I thought the messages would stop. But my friends and I were glad that his action continued.

I began getting letters almost every Friday. The front-desk worker always knew who the letters were from----the return address said, “The Hunk.” Many times the envelopes were addressed in crayon, and along with the enclosed letters were usually drawings of our cat and dog, pictures of him and mom and if I had been home the weekend before, of me racing around town with friends and using the house as a hotel. He also had his mountain scene and the hearten-cased inscription (题词),“Dad-n-Angie”.

6、In today’s Internet age, the demand for online games continues to grow. Online computer game centers exist in many cities and towns throughout Asia. Facing the pressures of school and life, people turn to the virtual(虚拟) world, expecting a diversion from these problems. Too often, however, they can lead to problems and unhealthy addictions.

This is most clearly seen in the example of South Korea. The country has the world’s highest percentage of high-speed Internet services. It also has a high number of online game players and related problems. In 2002, a young man collapsed(突然晕倒) and died while playing online games. He had been playing almost nonstop for 86 hours at an Internet café. Another young man killed his sister after becoming confused between the online world and real life. A 12-year-old boy stole US $ 16,000 from his father and ran away from home. He did this to continue his obsession(着迷) with an online game. Such problems, however, don’t just happen in South Korea. They are spreading to other parts of Asia, as well.

What kinds of people develop online game addiction? What does the problem look like? Dr. SueHuei Chen, a clinical psychologist, researches Internet addiction. She discovered some signs of at-risk individuals such as lack friendships and good social skills. Those problem individuals feel it so compulsive(极有趣的) to play online games that they could sacrifice(牺牲) things such as school or family. They feel the need to spend more and more time online. And they become upset if anyone tries to limit their online game playing.

How many problem game players are there? In mainland China, the potential number of problem online gamers is alarming. In 2004, the China Daily reported that China had 13.8 million online game players. Furthermore, it stated that 80 percent of these were under 25 and had signs of addiction. Such numbers point toward a growing problem among Chinese youth.

Make sure to keep control over your online game playing. If you don’t control it, it can get control of you.

5、Yellowstone Weather

Yellowstone National Park is at high altitude(海拔).Most of the park is above 7,500 feet (2,275 meters).

Yellowstone's weather is unpredictable. In summer, it may be warm and sunny with temperatures in the high 70s. At night in any given month, the temperature may drop close to freezing. So it is best to come prepared for cold evenings and mornings, especially if you are camping or hiking. When you leave your campsite, please leave it prepared for possible thundershowers and wind.

A sunny warm day may become fiercely(猛烈地) stormy with wind, rain, sleet and sometimes snow. Without enough clothing, and easy day hike or boat trip can turn into a battle for survival.

Seasonal Weather Information

Spring

Cold and snow continue into May, although temperatures gradually climb. Early in spring, daytime temperatures average in the 40s to 50s;by late May and June, they may reach the 60s and 70s. Nighttime lows fall below freezing.

Summer

Daytime temperatures are usually in the 70s, occasionally reaching the 80s in the lower elevations  (高度).Nights are cool, temperatures may drop in the 40s and 30s--sometimes even the 20s. June can be cool and rainy; July and August tend to be somewhat drier, although afternoon thundershowers are common.

Fall

Weather can be pleasant, although temperatures average 10--20 degrees lower than summer readings. Nighttime lows can fall into the teens  and lower. Snowstorms increase in frequency as the weeks go by or towards the end of the fall season.

Winter

Temperatures often stay near zero throughout the day, occasionally reaching high in the 20s. Suhzero nighttime lows are common. Annual snowfall averages nearly 150 inches in most of the park. At higher places, 200-- 400 inches of snow have been recorded.

4、Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels(管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. As she says, "While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain."

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician(儿科医生), believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to(可追溯到) a lack of movement as babies. "Babies need movement that stimulates their five senses(感官). They need to establish a connection between motion(动作)and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to associate(联系) physical activity with higher learning," says Margaret.

Older people can beef up(加强) their brains as well. Columbia University studied a group of seniors ranging in age from(从...排列到) seventy to seventy-nine. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for infants(婴儿), exercise for older people should involve some complexity. Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or tai-chi, helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time.

For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain's flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.

1.What is the main idea of this reading?

A.How to exercise                                  B.How exercise helps the brain

C.How to get good scores on a test          D.How the brain can change

2.According to the reading, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?

A.Exercise makes us stupid.                  B.The brain needs special mental exercise.

C.The more exercise, the bigger the brain  D.Physical exercise helps us think better.

3.The minimum(最小)amount of exercise required to gain any benefit is.

A.three hours per week                          B.40 hours per week

C.three hours per day                             D.40 hours per month

4.Why is yoga recommended for seniors?

A.It is easy on joints.                               B.It can be done in groups.

C.It does not increase the heart rate.         D.It includes learning new motions.

3、Have you ever received a gift that was so clearly not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been handed to you by mistake?Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she had opened the wrong box? Maybe she responded with a polite “Why, thank you,” but you knew you had missed the mark. Why do presents sometimes go wrong? And what do your choices(good and bad)reflect about your personal qualities?

Choosing the right gift is an art,I believe. It calls for empathy---the ability to put yourself into someone else’s head and heart. We’re all able to do this;in fact,we’re born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest period of childhood, however,it needs to be reinforced(加强)by our parents, teachers, friends. When it isn’t, we’re not able to understand other people’s feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select, and so can many other emotional(情感的)qualities.

Think back to the presents you’ve given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection, how much you spent, your thoughts while you were shopping, and your feelings when the receiver opened the package. Keep in mind that what you choose displays your inner world. Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.

We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Ignoring the tradition won’t make it go away. If you really dislike such a tradition, tell your friends ahead of time.
