3、In a society such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious and cultural differences, people highly value individualism--the differences among people.  Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special.  The educational systems in these countries show these values.  Students do not memorize all possible basic knowledge.  Instead, they work individually and find answers by themselves.  There is often discussion in the classroom.  At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.

In most Asia societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history and culture.  Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the orient reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism.  Children in China, Japan and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments.

There are advantages and disadvantages of both systems of education.  For example, one advantage of the system in Japan is that students there learn much more about math, physics, biology and chemistry than American students by the end of high school.  They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do.  The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control.  There is, however, a disadvantage.  Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.

The advantage of the educational system in North America, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves.  The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas.  There is, however, a disadvantage.  When students graduate from school, they haven’t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.

2、       "I'm seventy years old," says the gray-haired lady proudly to the entertainer at her Community Club dinner.

"Did you hear that, everyone?" says the entertainer.  "This lovely lady is just seventy years  young! And she doesn't look a day over fifty. "

He has been careful not to use the word "old".  In a society where youth is so admired, old age is often seen as something sad, something to fight against.  Americans prefer not to say "old" people.  They use the expression "senior citizens".  They do not talk about "old people's" homes, but "retirement" homes.

In fact, the entertainer is not so wrong.  Seventy is not very old these days.  People in the US are living longer and longer.  In1980, 12 percent of Americans were over sixty-five years old.  By 2030, 21 percent will be over sixty-five.  One reason for this is that families are getting smaller.  The average couple now has only 1. 8 children.  At the same time, improved medical care means that people are living longer.

This change in the age of Americans is going to have serious results.  For one thing, medical costs are rising.  The government is unable to pay the elderly people's medical bills that have gone up very much.  Some old people have to leave hospital "sicker and quicker" than they should, before they are really better.

More fortunate senior citizens, though, who still have good health, want new laws to be passed to allow them to stay at work.  In the past, the retirement age was sixty-five, but that is changing now.  Older people are stronger and more energetic than ever before.  Many of them refuse to stop working just because they have reached a certain age.

There is a change, too, in the way in which elderly people see themselves.  Many are no longer happy to accept the gray hair, bald heads, and boring clothes of their own parents.  They like to wear younger-looking clothes and bright makeup(化妆品). American women spend millions of dollars a year on operations to lift their faces and make those ugly wrinkles disappear.  Men are prepared to spend even more on operations to plant new hair on their bald spots.  It's worth any money to look younger.

A.People live longer because of improved medical care.

B.The government finds it difficult to afford the medical bills of the elderly.

C.People use polite expressions when talking about old age.

D.The old patients' time in hospital is strictly limited.

58.Which of the following is not the result of the changing in the age of Americans?

       A.Medical costs are rising.

       B.The family becomes smaller.

       C.The retirement age needs changing.

D.Elderly people spend a lot on keeping young.

School was over and I was both mentally and physically tired.  I sat at the very front of the bus because of my   36    to get home.  Sitting at the front makes you   37    out like a shiny coin in a pile of dull pennies.

Janie, the driver, tries to break the   38    atmosphere by striking the match of   39    .  I try to mind my manners and   40    listen, but usually I am too busy thinking about my day.  On this day,   41    , her conversation was worth listening to.

“My father’s sick,” she said to no one in   42    . I could see the anxiety and fear in her eyes.  With a sudden change of attitude and interest, I asked, “What’s wrong with him?”

With her eyes wet and her voice tight from   43    the tears, she responded, “Heart trouble. ” Her eyes lowered as she   44    .  “I’ve already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him. ”

I couldn’t respond.  I was   45    .  My heart ached for her.  I sat on the old, smelly seat thinking of the great   46    my own mother was thrown into when her father died.  I saw how hard it was,   47   still is, for her.  I wouldn’t like anyone to go   48    that.

Suddenly I realized Janie wasn’t only a bus driver.  That was   49    her job.  She had a whole world of family and concerns too.  I had never thought of her as   50    but a driver.

I suddenly felt very   51    .  I realized I had only thought of people as   52    as what their purposes were in my life.  I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver.  I had judged her by her job and brushed her off as   53    .

For all I know, I’m just another person in   54    else’s world, and many not even be important.  I   55    not have been so selfish and self-centered.  Everyone has places to go, people to see and appointments(约会) to keep.  Understanding people is an art.
