Whenever there’s a coral reef, the chances are there are divers nearby.  Diving is one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world.  Among the world’s favorite diving sports are the northern edge of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and the Maldives’ islands in the Indian Ocean.  There, there is enough underwater activity to satisfy the most demanding diver.

People have been skiing since 3000 BC, but the birth of modern skiing --- for pleasure rather than necessity --- only began in the late 19th century.  Since then, winter’s top sport has become an industry.  European countries, especially those along the Alps are famous for their skiing spots.  Norway, France and Switzerland are good choices.  There you can enjoy plenty of exercise among the mountainous forests while breathing in the fresh air.  Within a couple of lessons, you will be gliding through the trees in style.

Many beautiful mountains are now linked by steel cables and ladders.  You can work your way up the kind of rocks that would otherwise be only fit for birds.  Besides the proper equipment, you often need a strong will.  Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc at 4807 meters, is a common goal for climbers worldwide.

Have you been to Shanghai?  Did you climb the TV tower?  The tower is the highest in Asia, and the CN Tower is in Toronto.  Let’s view the city from the tower.  Most buildings in Toronto are not very high.  But the CN tower stands out among the buildings.  It is 553 meters high, the world’s highest tower.

In a zoo without bars, safaris are adventure in its purest form.  Out on safari, it is the animals who rule the land.  From jeeps, you can see the struggles of life and death in a variety of wildlife, such as elephants, lions, birds and snakes.

The national parks in Africa are the perfect places for safaris.

At first it all seems rather easy as you drift along with the water only occasionally reaching over the sides of your raft.  And then suddenly, you realize why they call it white-water rafting.

First comes the dull, distant roar of rapids, then a wash of white water and finally the roller-coaster ride that turns you at top speed down the river.  The Bio-Bio River in Chile and the Colorado River in the US are among the finest white-water destinations.

The producers of instant coffee found their product strongly resisted in the market place despite their product’s obvious advantages.  Furthermore, the advertising expenditure(费用) for instant coffee was far greater than that for regular coffee.  Efforts were made to find the cause of the consumers’ seemingly unreasonable resistance to the product.  The reason given by most people was dislike of the taste.  The producers thought that there might be deeper reasons.  However, this was confirmed by one of motivation research’s classic studies, one often cited in the trade.

Mason Haire of the University of California made two shopping lists that were almost the same except for one item.  There were six items common to both lists: hamburger, carrots, bread, baking powder, canned peaches, and potatoes with the brands or amounts specified(具体说明).  The seventh item, in fifth place on both lists, read “one pound Maxwell House coffee” on one side and “Nescafe instant coffee” on the other.  One list was given to each one in a group of fifty women, and the other list to those in the other group of the same size.  These women were asked to study their list and then to describe, as far as they could, the kind of woman (“personality and character”) who would draw up that shopping list.  Nearly half of those who had received the list including instant coffee described a housewife who was lazy and a poor planner.  On the other hand, only one woman in the other group described the housewife, who had included regular coffee on her list, as being lazy; only six of that group suggested that she was probably not a good wife; and no one drew the same conclusion as the women in the “instant coffee” group did about the housewife who intend to buy regular coffee.

2、   Villagers in Koh Samui yesterday criticized state authorities for their failure to stop illegal deforestation on the resort island.  The villagers in Bor Phut said they had seen a group of men take chainsaws to a forest on Khao Duang Nok mountain near Samui airport.  They believe the men are falling trees to clear the land for a construction project.

“We’ve heard the sound of saws working,” said a villager.  The mountain’steep slope made it difficult for the villagers to get into the forest to see the men at work.  However, they said traces of deforestation were apparent.  One villager said he reported the matter to state authorities, asking them to take legal action, but to no avail.

Khao Duang Nok has been under the spotlight after the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry investigated the matter.

A businessman was charged with having occupied 49 acres of land with false land documents and many land officials were arranged to leave the area during the investigation in connection with land scandals in a project known as “The Peak”.

Koh Samui district chief Decha Kangsanant has ordered a stop to any development activities on Khao Duang Nok until the investigation results are released.  However, the villagers said nothing has been done to stop deforestation.  Sunthorn Watcharakuldirok, director of the Forestry Department, said the group of men entered the forest two weeks ago after forestry officials returned from their inspection.

The fact that the men remained fearless showed that it was the work of influential people who were challenging state power, he said.  His department is planning to arrest all the men.

1、  Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a getting.  It was not until in my later thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting.  One discovery I made about giving away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form.  One Sunday morning the local post office delivered a letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office.  I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation.  More than a year later I needed a post office box for a new business I was starting.  I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list.  As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway.  He had overheard our conversation.  “Wasn’t it you that wrote us a letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?”  I said it was.  “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if you have to make one for you.  You don’t know what a letter like that means to us.  We usually get nothing but complaints.”

   D. the post man delivered an important letter in time

   A. many had applied for post-office boxes before him

   B. he asked to put his name on a waiting list

   C. he tried to see the postmaster

   A. to make a new post-office for the author

   B. to let the author have a post-office box
