If you come to school one day and all your friends are talking to their computers, don’t worry．There’s nothing wrong with them, and there’s nothing wrong with you．They are all just using a new kind of programme, which can listen to your voice and remember who you are．Talking computers are now new．People were very interested in them twenty years ago, but they never worked very well．They only knew about 1,000 words, and you need 10,000 words to carry out most activities．Most programmes now know 30,000 words．

There are even some new programmes which can remember 50,000 words．They are useful for people who need to put large amounts of text into computers．This is a good thing for people like doctors and writers because it is very quick．They can just talk straight into the computer．
We all speak in a different way, so how does the machine know what we are saying?You need to teach it to remember the way speak by reading lists of words slowly into the machine．People who like talking into the computer say that it is much better and cheaper than using a keyboard．This means that they have more time to do more important and more interesting things．
