A hare was very popular with the other animals who all said they were her friends. But one day she heard the hounds(猎犬)getting close and hoped to escape them by the aid of her many friends. So,she went to the horse, and asked him to carry her away from the hounds on his back. But he refused, because he had important work to do for his master. He felt sure that all her other friends would come to help her.
She then came to the bull, and hoped that he would repel the hounds with his horns (角).The bull replied,"I am very sorry, but I have an appointment with a lady;but I feel sure that our friend the goat will do what you want." The goat, however, feared that his back might do her some harm if he took her upon it.The sheep,he felt sure, was the proper friend to ask for help.
So she went to the sheep and told him the situation. The sheep replied,"Another time,my dear friend. I do not like to have anything to do with it,as hounds have been known to eat sheep as well as hares."
The hare then went,as a last hope,to the calf (小牛),who regretted that he was unable to help her,as he did not like to take the responsibility (责任) upon himself,as so many older persons than himself had refused the task.By this time the hounds were quite near, and the hare took to her heels and luckily escaped.

We secretly sent out letters to the people in Grandmother's address book and asked them to send a letter with a memory that they had shared with her. People sent us letters with poems, stories and pictures. The deep feeling that was shared through the response (回应) surprised us. We compiled(编辑)these letters into a memory book and amazed her with it on the morning of her birthday.
The unusual thing about my grandmother's friends was not the number that she had, but the connection they shared. In many ways this book of friendship was the greatest achievement of my grandmother's life.
I believe that developing true friendships is one of the most important things that anyone can do in one's lifetime. It is not a matter of the number of friends one has, but the quality of the bonds. If one has had at least one true friendship before dying, then one can say one has lived a successful life. I have made many friends and I believe I have begun to develop the same types of friendships my grandmother kept up over her lifetime. I only hope that I will be as successful as she has been.

When I was at university, I studied very hard. But a lot of my friends did very little work. Some did just enough to pass exams. Others didn’t do quite enough. Fred Baines was one of them. He spent more time drinking in the Students’ Union than working in the library.
Once at the end of the term, we had to take an important test in chemistry. The test had a hundred questions. In my room the night before the test, Fred was watching TV. Fred usually worried a lot the night before a test. But on that night he looked perfectly calm. Then he told me of his plan. “It’s very simple. There are a hundred questions and I have to get fifty correct to pass the test. I’ll take a coin into the examination room. I haven’t studied a chemistry book for months, so I’ll just toss the coin. That way, I’m sure I’ll get half the questions right.”
The next day, Fred came happily into the exam room. As he sat tossing a coin for half an hour he marked down his answers. Then he left, half an hour before the rest of us.
The next day, he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor. “Oh, good,” he said, “Have you got the result of the test?” The professor looked at him and smiled, “Ah, it’s you, Baines. Just a minute.” Then he reached into his pocket and took out a coin. He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it.
“I’m terribly sorry, Baines,” he said, “You failed!”

Every day, you carry a lot of books around in your schoolbag. They are heavy. You might wonder if there’s some way to take the weight off your shoulders. The answer is an e-book reader.
E-book readers are digital machines similar to laptops (手提电脑), but smaller and lighter. You can read an e-book on one just like reading a real paperback (纸制书). This small device (装置) can hold over 1,000 books, and you can easily carry it anywhere.
At present, e-book readers don’t carry e-textbooks. But you can use them to read novels and magazines. The most successful e-book reader right now is the Kindle, made by the US book-selling website Amazon.
Last Tuesday, a new e-reader called Nook came on the market. It was developed by the US chain bookstore Barnes & Noble. It might become a big hit with book lovers.
Different from other e-book readers, the Nook allows you to lend your e-book to a friend for up to two weeks. You simply e-mail the book from your Nook and your friend can read it on any device with the Barnes & Noble eReader software – their own e-book reader, computer or cell phone . After two weeks, they can no longer read the book and will return it to you.
The Nook has other new features too. You read in black and white on the main screen, just like with Kindle. But the Nook also has a color touch screen below the main screen. It allows you to flip (翻页) through the book or magazine you’re reading. It goes black to save power when you’re not using it.
The Nook also comes with a wireless Internet connection (无线上网). Nook users in the United States can go to Barnes & Noble stores and use their e-books to browse (浏览) through thousands of e-books and magazines for free.
