Mary was a 911 operator(接线员) in Los Angeles. One Thursday morning, she was surprised to get a call from a young child who said, “Mom is ill, Mom is ill”, again and again. Mary hurried to find the address of the call. She called the police. In a minute, the policemen and doctors arrived at the house. They broke the door open, and they couldn’t believe their eyes. The little child was so young that maybe she could not walk! She was sitting beside her mother and holding her mother’s hand. Tears(眼泪) were running down her face.
The doctor gave the woman some medicine and soon she woke up. Later, she told people , “Everyone was surprised that my daughter could call 911. One Monday I tried to teach her how to call 911.” “It’s the first time I’ve seen a two-year-old child call 911.”

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day the feelings were told that the island would sink, so all built boats and left, except Love. Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out(坚持) until the last possible moment.
When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.
Richness was passing by Love in a big boat. Love said,“Richness, can you take me with you?”
Richness answered,“No, I can’t. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you.”
Love decided to ask Vanity(虚荣心) who was also passing by in a beautiful ship.“Vanity, please help me!”
“I can’t help you, Love. You are all wet and might destroy my boat,”Vanity answered.
Sadness was close by, so Love asked,“Sadness, let me go with you.”
“Oh…Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!”
Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her. Suddenly , there was a voice, “Come, Love, I will take you.” It was an elder. So thankful and happy, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed(欠) the elder, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, “Who helped me?”
“It was Time,” Knowledge answered.
“Time?” asked Love. “But why did Time help me?”
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom(智慧) and answered, “Because only Time is able to understand how valuable Love is.”

Will it matter if you don’t have your breakfast? There were a test in the US. People of different ages, from 12 to 83, took the test. During the test, these people got all kinds of breakfasts and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Scientists wanted to see how well they worked after they ate different kinds of breakfasts.
The result shows that if a person eats a right breakfast , he or she will work better than if he or she has no breakfast. If a student has fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen more carefully in class.
The result is different from what some people think. It shows having no breakfast will not help them lose weight.(减肥) This is because they become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch. In fact, they will gain weight.(增重) But they will lose more weight if they reduce other meals.
