(A)
What do you often do when you meet a new word in your reading? You take a guess(猜测)and then read on,because you hope the writer will give you some clues(提示)to the meaning of the new word.In fact, the meanings of many words will be clear from context―the words or sentences before or after what you are reading. You can get the meaning of a new word by looking for clues given by context. For example,if you don't know the word “context” ,you will know its meaning with the help of “the words or sentences before or after what you are reading”.
Context sometimes gives us definition(定义)clues and sometimes example clues.Take the sentence “Linguistics, the scientific study of language,is very important for language students” for example. We can get the meaning of “linguistics” by the definition of “the scientific study of language”.In the sentences with example clues, the examples are usually given by some words or phrases like such as,for example, for instance and so on.
Context clues are useful in finding the meaning of an unknown word.We can make better use of them.
