The Chinese New Year is now known as the Spring Festival because it starts from the beginning of spring.Though there are some sayings about its origin(起源), all agree that the word Nian, which in modem Chinese means“year”,was originally the name of a beast(野兽)that start-ed to eat people the night before the beginning of a new year.
One story goes that the beast Nian had a very big mouth that would take in a great many people at one time.People were very afraid. One day, an old man came to their help and said he would stop all this.To Nian he said,“I hear that you are very strong, but can you eat up all the beasts on earth instead of people who are too weak to be your enemy(敌人)?Yes,”Nian agreed with him and went to kill many of the beasts on earth.People were very happy because those beasts also did bad things to people and killed their farm animals from time to time.
After that, the old man, who was a god(神), rode on the beast Nian and left.Nian was gone, and other beasts also went into forests; people began to enjoy their happy life. Before the old man left, he had told people to put up red paper-cuts on their windows and doors at each year's end to drive Nian away, because red is the colour the beast felt most afraid of.
From then on, every year at the beginning of spring, people“Guo Nian”.The word“Guo Nian”means“Go through the Nian safely”.Putting up red paper cuts to drive Nian away and making dumplings for a better new year are still an every-year doing by the Chinese people. However(但是)people today have long forgotten why they are doing all this, they just feel the colour and the food make the New Year very enjoyable.

“No man is an island” is a well-known line from John Donne's Devotion, written more than three hundred years ago.Even now people still agree with him.No one can live a completely isolated life.Without other people, life became empty and sad.We all need friends.
For some of us, though making friends is not difficult, feeling shy, we may not want to make the first move.It is also difficult at times to keep the friends we already have.
There are many books about friendship, but Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People, written in 1936, is the most famous. This “how to” book about getting along with other people became a best-seller.It was later put into 28 languages.
Dale Carnegie's advice seems to be simple, but can his advice help you? Do you need to change the way you act? Here is the list of advice from his book.
1.Be friendly and polite.Always greet with a smile.Begin with “excuse me” or “would you please”, when you want to ask somebody.Remember to say “thank you” and try to be as helpful as you can.
2.Go out of your way to be nice.Find some time to do special things for other people.Making some soup for a sick neighbour may seem like a little thing to you, but it will make your neighbour feel a lot better.
3.Remember names. They say that the sweetest music to a person's ears is the sound of his or her own name.
4.Be open-minded.Try to understand other people's ways and ideas and learn something from them.
5.Listen patiently. When someone is talking to you, look at him or her, listen carefully and say something when necessary.

There have been many great inventions or things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was the one that is still very important today——the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distance.
For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world.People didn't have to explore much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.
In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made.Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all play a big part in our daily life today.
The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1928, jet planes in 1930.This was also a time when a new material was first made.Nylon came out in 1935.It changed the kind of clothes people wore.
The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and allowed them to live longer.By the 1960s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.
By this time most people in developed countries had a very good life.Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire(渴望)to explore again. The earth was known to man but the stars were not.Man began looking for ways to go into space.Russia made the first step. Then United States took a step.Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their own steps into space.
In 1969 man took his biggest step away from earth.Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning, though.New inventions will some day allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.
