On the first day of school our teacher let us know someone. Looking out, we found an old woman 16 at the door. She said, “Hi, my name is Susan, I’m seventy years old.” While we were 17 what made her take this challenge (挑战) at her age, she said with a smile, “I'm here to meet a rich husband, get 18 , have two children and travel together.” Hearing this, all of us laughed. “In fact,” she went on, “I always 19 of having a college education, and now I’m getting 20 !”
After class we had chocolate and milk together. We became good 21 . I often listened to this “time machine” as she shared her study with me.
At the end of the term we invited Susan to give us a 22 . When she was stepped up to the front, suddenly she found she took the wrong paper. She felt a little frustrated(沮丧的) and said, “I'm sorry. I’m so nervous that I can’t get my ready talk 23 , so I have to tell you 24 I know .”
In her speech she told us, “We don’t stop playing as we are old, we grow old because we stop playing. The secret of staying 25 , being happy and getting success is that we should laugh and find something 26 every day. I think there is a great 27 between growing old and growing up. I am seventy now. If I 28 in bed for one full year and never do anything. I’ll become seventy – one. Since anybody can grow older, my idea is to grow up by always finding the chance in change. Growing older can’t be avoided(避免的), growing up can be 29 . It’s never too late to be all you can be possible.”
During the four years’ study, it was so easy for Susan to make friends 30 she went. In the end, the wonderful woman got a college degree.

It was a lovely spring day. We could see dandelions (蒲公英) popping (炸开) 14 the grass in bunches (束). I watched my mother bend down by one of the bunches. “I think I’ll dig up (挖光) all these weeds (野草),” she said. “From now on, we’ll 15 have roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested(抗议). “All flowers are 16 —even dandelions !”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded. “And that is 17 of people, too,” she added.
When I 18 that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry and told her the truth. “But you will be a wonderful narrator,” she said, 19 me of how much I loved to read stories’ aloud.

Last week Lu visited England. He stayed with my grandmother. He said it was a strange visit. “I don’t understand, but I 16 your grandmother a lot. When I arrived, I gave her a 17 from Suzhou. She looked in it and asked me to take it back. Then I saw a red spider(蜘蛛) on the table so I killed it for her and she seemed very 18 . Do English people like spiders?”
“Later we went shopping. Someone was painting a shop 19 , so there was a ladder. Grandmother 20 me walking under it and said I must walk around it. I liked the shops and bought a smart 21 for my father and some new shoes for myself. When we got back, I put the shoes on the table and opened the umbrella to wonder 22 it was all right. Your grandmother came in and 23 !”
“Then I broke a small 24 in the bathroom. Your grandmother’s face went white. I felt very sorry. When I left I gave 25 grandmother some flowers. She counted and there were 13. She 26 it. I think she was happy I was going.”
I 27 to Lu, “My grandmother follows the old customs(习俗). You must not give someone an empty purse 28 they will have no money. You must not kill a “money spider” or the same will happen. It is very unlucky to walk under a ladder and to put new shoes on the table. A(n) 29 umbrella in a house means someone will die. Breaking a mirror brings seven years’ bad luck, and 13 is 30 a very unlucky number. You were really making my grandmother very afraid. ”
