Is the world warming up? According to many reports the answer is yes.Eleven of the hottest years since 1850 appeared between 1995 and 2006.Last year, the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)reported the earth was about 0.75℃warmer than it was in 1850.While this doesn’t sound like a lot, a small difference in average(平均)temperature can make a big difference in climate(气候).During the last ice age, the planet was only about five degrees colder than now.

It’s all about the speed at which temperatures are changing. In the past, temperatures moved up or down step by step. But in the 20th century, especially since 1976, temperatures have likely risen more quickly than during any century in the last 1,000 years.Warming may bring improved harvests(收获)to northern countries such as Canada and Russia. However, many species(物种)won’t like these conditions. They begin moving towards cooler places and cause lots of trouble to human world.

The IPCC reported that human activity is very likely responsible(负责任的), by increasing the greenhouse effect(效应).Some gases cause the air to take in heat energy.Without the greenhouse effect, the earth’s average temperature would be -18℃ rather than the present comfortable 14.6 degrees. The main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide(CO2), water vapor(蒸汽)and some other gases.Burning oil, coal and waste adds to the Carbon dioxide, and it has increased 35%since 1850.

Many researchers have found that natural forces alone don’t explain the temperature increases over the last 30 to 40 years.Their study shows that as carbon dioxide goes up, temperatures will rise too.But some scientists don’t agree. They think the effect of human produced greenhouse gases is very small compared to the normal changes that the climate causes.

When asked whether humans are causing the world warming, Carl Wunsch, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology says,“It seems very likely from what I’ve seen.Is it 100%sure?No.There’s something to do with natural changes.”Does that mean we should have a“wait and see”attitude(态度)?Not according to Wunsch. He points out we buy house insurance(保险)not because we are sure our homes will be on fire, but because it’s a danger we’d rather avoid.

The writer’s purpose here is ________.

[ ]

A.

0.75℃.

B.

-18℃.

C.

14.6℃.

D.

13.85℃.

(3)

Which of the following is responsible for the earth’s warming up?

[ ]

A.

Human activities rather than natural changes.

B.

Natural changes rather than human activities.

C.

Both human activities and natural changes.

D.

Neither natural changes nor human activities.

(4)

What’s the best thing we should do next?

[ ]

A.

Wait for new scientific findings.

B.

Work hard on further study.

C.

Leave things as they normally are.

D.

Take more action and talk less.

One of the things I always believe is that no matter how bad something is, you can take something positive out of it. The one time I wasn't sure of that was on September 11.

I usually wake up at 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning. That day, Lhappened to wake up earlier. I turned on the TV and I saw that a plane had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. My first reaction was that it was a terrible accident. Then I saw another plane fly into the South Tower and I realized that I was witnessing an act of terrorism.

My wife and I spent the day watching the terrible pictures over and over again. When I watched family members looking for their loved ones, the pain in their eyes was something I would never forget. I couldn't understand how something this terrible could have happened.

It wasn't until a few weeks after September 11 that I began to see that perhaps some good did come from this tragedy. People seem different now, more understanding, more tolerant. Little things that seemed to be such trouble before are no longer big things. Personally, I am more tolerant than I was. I realize life is too short and too precious to let myself get worried over small things. I've learned also that you can't take things for granted. Things change in the blind of an eye. People go to work and don't come back. One moment they're living and the next minute they're not. And, it doesn't matter who you are, there is nothing you can do about it. We never know when our time here will be over, so we all need to make the most of every minute we have.

You try to learn from what happened. You can't be used up by it. You can't live by it. All you can do is just live.

Computer games are just fun, I have been playing them for years, and I have become really good at it.Some of my classmates think that I’m quite special. What’s so special about that?

One day I was having lunch at school.Suddenly a girl I didn’t know came and sat next to me“What do you do for fun?”She asked.“I am a gamer,”I said in a low voice.“A gamer!”She couldn’t believe what I was saying and she burst into laughter, with all the apple pie out of her mouth.

Most people think gaming is suitable for boys, but not for girls.Mayby I should cut my hair short and change my actions so that I look like a boy.

Actually, most boys don’t feel there is anything wrong with my hobby.I have met many boy gamers-some online and some face-to-face.None of them think badly about me being a girl gamer.I have made some good friends with them.
