Letter A
Dear Rose,
I like your programs very much. I'm now writing to ask you something about American social customs. My American friends want me to join them in their dinner party. I am very happy arid have decided to go but I'm a little worried about it, too. The social customs in my country are very different from here, and I know little about American ones.
Should I bring a present, such as sweets or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I use the fork and knife? How can I let the family know that I'm thankful for their kindness?
Wang Lin
Letter B
Dear Wang Lin,
It's a good idea to bring a small present when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always nice, or you may bring a bottle of wine if you know that your friends drink it.
You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don't get there early. If you're going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them. Try to be free at the dinner table. If you don't know how to use the fork and knife, just watch the other people, and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, ask the person next to you.
If you like the food, say so. Of course, you'll thank them for the meal and for their kindness. It's also a good idea to send a thank you card the clay after.

Are you sorry for not traveling during the National Day ? If you stay at home at that time, I think you are very lucky. Why? Because there are too many people everywhere. In many places of interest in China, it’s too crowded to do anything.
Look at the picture. It was too crowded on the Great Wall on October 1st, 2012. You even couldn’t take photos for you or your friends. All what we could see were people. It was reported that there were about twenty people per meter on the Great Wall. My friends told me they could see nothing but many people on the Great Wall. “We couldn’t walk if the people in front of us didn’t walk,” he said. He showed us a photo on the Great Wall. In the photo, we hardly found him out, there were too many people.
So some people give the advice that we should not have the gold week (黄金周) any more. But other people say no about this advice. What’s your idea of it? Are you sorry now for not traveling during the gold week? I love staying at home more than traveling next National Day.【小题1】

When I was twelve years old, my family were the first black people to move into an all white part of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Many of our new neighbors weren’t very welcoming. Some of them said angrily that we should return to where we came from. The children sometimes threw stones at me or drove me home from school.
Most of my teachers simply took no notice of me, but not Dorothy Bean, my history teacher.Miss Bean was angry at how badly I was being treated, but she didn’t say this to me.Miss Bean showed her respect for me by teaching me just like anyone else.Instead of being unnoticed, I was given a chance to show that I was clever.Miss Bean was the first teacher who ever made me think for myself. She always wanted to know what I thought about difficult questions. Was Thomas Jefferson right to buy Louisiana from France? Why? She expected me to have my own idea.Miss Bean was teaching me that thinking for oneself was the real key to education.
One day, when I was not paying attention in class, Miss Bean suddenly threw an eraser at me.The eraser hit me right on the hand and sent my pencil flying. The whole class were very surprised at first, then started laughing. This event became famous in the school and, because it happened to me, the students wanted to get to know me.So that’s the story of how Dorothy Bean made me her target(靶子), and how I became just another kid in school.
