When I was twelve years old, my family were the first black people to move into an all white part of
Grand Rapids, Michigan. Many of our new neighbors weren't very welcoming. Some of them said angrily
that we should return to where we came from. The children sometimes threw stones at me or drove me
home from school.
Most of my teachers simply took no notice of me, but not Dorothy Bean, my history teacher. Miss Bean
was angry at how badly I was being treated, but she didn't say this to me. Miss Bean showed her respect
for me by teaching me just like anyone else. Instead of being unnoticed, I was given a chance to show that
I was clever. Miss Bean was the first teacher who ever made me think for myself. She always wanted to
know what I thought about difficult questions. Was Thomas Jefferson right to buy Louisiana from France?
Why? She expected me to have my own idea. Miss Bean was teaching me that thinking for oneself was the
real key to education.
One day, when I was not paying attention in class, Miss Bean suddenly threw an eraser at me. The eraser
hit me right on the hand and sent my pencil flying. The whole class were very surprised at first, then started
laughing. This event became famous in the school and, because it happened to me, the students wanted to
get to know me. So that's the story of how Dorothy Bean made me her target (靶子), and how I became
just another kid in school.

Subject: The Riding for the Disabled Association

Hi Christine,

Sorry I haven’t emailed lately —I’ve been very busy since becoming a volunteer for the Riding for the Disabled Association.

Every Saturday, I help to get the horses 61___________ for the disabled(残疾) riders. Many more disabled people want to ride 62___________ than you’d imagine. It’s a disadvantage that I don’t know how to ride —I’d love to got on long rides with the riders— but I’ll learn soon 63___________. Right now, I’m just happy to be able to lead the horses around for the disabled riders.

I’m 64___________ helping to organize a sale, which will be 65___________ next month. It’s a lot more work than helping the disabled. I need to collect second-hand things to sell at the sale. There are 66___________ things available(获得的) than I thought, but I’m sure we’ll have enough 67___________ next month.

I hope the sale raises more money than last month’s walk. It was rainy, so too few people took part in the event. Last week, we held an auction(拍卖). The auction took much less 68___________ to organize than the walk. 69___________, for some reason, people offered too little money for the things, so we didn’t raise enough money.

I’m 70___________ you some pictures in the letter, as well as a speech I gave last week.                                                                                                             Robin

In the 1500s, South American fishermen said that the sea became warmer every few years. They gave this special event a Spanish name 'El Nino', meaning 'the baby'. It is called 'the baby' because it arrives around Christmas.

El Nino is a huge area of warm water in the middle of cold water in the Pacific Ocean. It happens every two to seven years. It moves around the ocean and becomes bigger and smaller at different times. This warm water affects the weather. It is always raining over El Nino. El Nino contains a lot of energy. Scientists think this energy is formed when wind comes from the northern half of the world. The winds blow across warm sea water in the south. When the strong wind hits the warm water, violent weather happens. Scientists think that El Nino existed for many thousands of years.

El Nino affects every person in the world because it affects the entire world's weather. It can bring the rain that farmers need. It can bring storms that destroy homes. It can mean that fishermen cannot catch fish, and it can bring floods. There is nothing we can do about El Nino. It is an event of nature. We can help the world's weather by trying to stop the greenhouse effect and air pollution. The most important job for scientists is to learn how to predict when El Nino is going to bring dangerous weather. Then, people can try to prepare for storms, floods and droughts. New technology like satellite pictures and temperature measuring equipment can help. Still, it is very hard to say when or where El Nino will cause damage.
