A young man in Japan wanted to be a great artist. He thought that he must study with the best teacher who lived many miles away. After traveling for several days, he arrived at the school and then visited the teacher.“What do you wish to learn from me? ” the teacher asked.

“I want you to teach me your art and help me become one of the best artists in the country, ” the young man replied.“How long must I study? ”

“Ten years at least.” The teacher answered.

The guy thought, “Ten years is a lot of time.I don't have that much time.”

So he asked the teacher, “What if I study twice as hard as everyone else does? How long would it take then? ”

“Then it would take twenty years, ” replied the teacher.

The guy thought, “That's even longer! I don't want to spend twenty years learning something.Certainly if I try really hard I could learn it much quicker.”

So the student asked again, “What if I practice day and night with all my effort? How long would it take? ”

“Thirty years, ” the teacher answered. The young student wondered why the teacher kept telling him that it would take longer.

He asked the teacher, “Why is it that each time I said I would work harder, you told me that it would take longer? ”

“The answer is simple. With one eye looking at your destination(目的地), there is only one eye left with which to find the way, ” the teacher said.

Any endeavor(尝试)takes effort, but it also takes patience. If we have one without the other, we get off balance(平衡).With only effort, we try and try but get frustrated(失落的)when we do not see results as fast as we would like, or we get tired very quickly. With only patience and no effort, we never really put our full attention to a task. This is as true with school work.

  Dear Victor,

I am a college student.Nowadays games on the net are very popular with college students. Some of my roommates are very interested in them. They not only play games in their free time, but also keep talking about them at night when lights are off, and they regard games as a part of their life.I’ve asked them to give it up, but they wouldn’t listen to me.It has become a rather big problem.Should I report it to our teachers or do something else?

Ted

  Dear Ted,

Drop it.Your roommates, as grown-ups, can do whatever they want with their time so long as it doesn’t break school rules or violate(妨碍)other people’s interests.

Playing perhaps gives these students relaxation from hard study. If they play too often and have little time to study, they will reap what they have sown(自食其果), but you will not.Reporting to the teachers would only harm your good name in your dormitory(宿舍).However, you have rights to ask your roommates to be quiet when you need sleep. If they aren’t angry with you, they will stop talking. But be polite and friendly.Perhaps, in return, join them in a game or two.

A famous study was done in a school by a professor(教授)from a university. At the start of the school year, the teachers were given the names of five children. They were told that these five were the most excellent students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only average(中等), and they were not the best students at all.Well, guess what?At the end of the year, all the five average students scored among the highest in the class.

What made these average students change so much to become top students? The only difference was the change in their teachers' attitude(态度).Because the teachers believed that these five kids were the top students, they expected more from them. And so these five average students began to believe and expect more from themselves. So they worked harder to do as well as they could.

Do you know?If you expect the best from people, they'll usually want to give you their best.A great leader said, “Treat(对待)a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you'll make him even worse. But treat a person like he's already a success, and you'll help make him the best he can be.”

Like the true story of 7-year-old Johnny, his teacher got so angry with him that one day she said, “Johnny, you're the naughtiest boy in this class.I'm sure you'll never change.” The next year Johnny had a new teacher. And on the first day of class, she talked with Johnny after school and said, “Johnny, I've heard a lot about you!But do you know that I don't believe a word of it.” And every day after that, this new teacher treated Johnny as if he was one of the smartest students even when Johnny did naughty things.Later on, Johnny became a school leader.Because that's the power of our belief(信任)and attitude toward children.

(1)

The professor started his research by ________.

[ ]

A.

telling the five students to work harder than ever before

B.

teaching the five children himself

C.

telling the teachers the five students were the best in the class

D.

asking the five children to find a new teacher

(2)

The five average students became top students mainly because of ________.

[ ]

A.

the professor's study

B.

the change in the professor's attitude

C.

the teachers' hard work

D.

the change in the teachers' attitude

(3)

Why did the writer tell us the story of 7-year-old Johnny?

[ ]

A.

To show the importance of encouragement.

B.

To show that the boy was clever enough.

C.

To let us know the famous boy.

D.

To let us know how good his new teacher was.

(4)

According to the story, we can learn that ________.

[ ]

A.

the research began at the end of the school year

B.

the students scored highest only because they worked hard

C.

if you expect the most from people, you'll get the least

D.

little Johnny liked his new teacher very much

(5)

What does the passage mainly tell us?

[ ]

A.

If you want to get more, you should have new teachers.

B.

Attitude and belief can change a person.

C.

A professor's study can help you score highest.

D.

Only teachers can make you a top student.
