  When people think of Paris, they will first think of the Eiffel Tower, a monument (纪念碑)to the French Revolution.On July 14th 1789, Parisians marched to the Bastille and fought with the King's soldiers to set free prisoners from the dungeons(地牢).This was the beginning of the French Revolution.The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World's Fair, held to celebrate the French Revolution's Centennial.It would be easy to build another Eiffel Tower elsewhere, but it would not be the same.It has become the symbol of Paris.

  When people visit New York, they will see the Statue of Liberty, which was designed by a Frenchman, Auguste Bartholdi(1834-1904).Bartholdi was famous for his art and statues.One evening, at a dinner party, he talked with his friends about how France had helped the United States win its freedom from England almost 100 years earlier.His friends decided Bartholdi should design a large statue of the Roman goddess, Libertas, or Liberty, as a gift to America.In 1884, France gave the statue to the United States.It has been one of America's famous symbols.

The Opera House with a “sailing roof” was designed by a famous Danish architect(丹麦建筑师), Utzon. The base(基础)of the building was started in 1959, years before the designs were finished.
