You might be surprised, for even today there are many people 1 me who never learned to read when they were growing up. As farmer's daughter, I never had a 2 . We children had to get out in the fields and work as soon as we were 3 .
When I left my hometown, I had to 4 on myself, and after I was married, my babies 5 coming until there were four. Then I 6 my husband who died of illness and I had to take two jobs to keep the five of us 7 . The only one thing that I wanted most to be able to read was always out of my 8 . Later, my dream for 9 became the one for my children. What a 10 it was as, one by one, they could read for me. But sometimes I felt 11 , for being illiterate (文盲), I was made 12 of even by my own child. “Lily,” I asked my little daughter, “read what it 13 on your report card.” “Okay, Mom. Lily is… the best girl in class.” That 14 fishy (可疑的). “Really?” I asked. She 15 to study the card again. “Well, just 16 .” But her sister 17 the card, reading loud, “Lily needs to 18 more attentions on the lessons…”
Before long, I happened to see a TV announcement about a reading 19 , saying “Anyone can learn at any age. Better 20 than never.” So I decided to learn how to read from then on.
