Everyone had their friends, but I knew one girl who didn’t. I guess you could call her a geek, because all she did was read, study, and do homework. I don’t think she even played a sport. She was one of those quiet people who no one really paid attention to, and those who was often laughed at. I had heard all kinds of rumors (谣言) that she had problems, but I didn’t really believe them.
My friends and I were nice to her. We let her sit at our lunch table and we often said “Hi” to her, but she wasn’t our best friend. Throughout the year, she started talking to us more and more. We continued being kind to her. She was normal as far as I was concerned (就我而言). She was just really quiet.
During the summer holidays I got a letter from her. It read, “I just wanted to thank you so much for being so extremely kind and friendly to me this year. Before you became my friend, I had no one to talk to or sit with at lunch. I didn’t think anyone wanted me around. I even wanted to kill myself because of this. But you and your friends changed that. You made me feel wanted. It meant so much to me. I am going to be moving and going to another school next year. I’ll never forget you and what you did.”
By the time I finished the letter, I was in shock. I could not believe what I had just read. I learned that the simplest things and the smallest acts of kindness can mean the world to someone else.

Two women who used to be the best of friends have fallen out over a big win at bingo(宾果游戏).
Tamara Foxton and 40 year old Helena Wallace used to play on Friday evenings and they had an agreement to divide any prize money they won between them. Three weeks ago, 56 year old grandmother Tamara won the national first prize of 63,000.Office worker Helena said, “We wept (流泪) with joy when the prize was announced. When I went to her house the following day to talk about splitting (分享) the money, she said that she had talked about it with her husband Billy and they had decided to keep it. She said the agreement had only been an informal (非正式的) one. She offered me three thousand, but I turned it down. ”
Tamara's side of the story is rather different :
“ I was going to offer her five thousand, but when she turned on me I didn't feel like giving her anything. A month ago, Billy, Helena and I all went to bingo and she won three hundred dollars. She wouldn't split the money three ways and include Billy, even though he had lent her ten dollars to play that evening. I told her I wasn't going to split my winnings any more. Of course, now she says she can't remember the conversation. Billy is retiring (退休) soon and now we are looking forward to traveling a bit. ”
Helen says :
“I always used to look up to Tamara… she always seemed honest. She has really let me down… it's so unfair. She has gone back on an agreement we had. As far as I am concerned (就我而言) , it's half or nothing. ”.
