Waste can be seen everywhere in the schoolSome students ask for more food than they can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroomThey say they can afford these thingsBut I don't agree with them

Waste can bring a lot of problemsAlthough China is rich in some resources, we are short of others, for example, fresh waterIt is reported that we will have no coal or oil to use in 100 yearsSo if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move? Think about itI think we should say no to the students who waste things every dayEverybody should stop wasting as soon as possible

In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent waste from happening, for example, turn off the water taps(水龙头)when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so onLittle by little, everything will be changedWaste can be stopped one day, if we do our best

As a result of pollution, Lake Erie, on the borders of the USA and Canada, is now without many living things.

Pollution in water is not simply a matter of “poisons” killing large numbers of fish overnight. Very often the effects of pollution are not noticed for many months or years because the first organisms (生物体) to be affected are either plants or plankton (浮游生物). These organisms are the food of fish, birds, and other creatures. When this food disappears, the fish and birds die too. In this way a whole food chain can be wiped out, and it is not until dead fish and water birds are seen at the river’s edge or on the sea shore that people realize what is happening.

Where do the substances which pollute water come from? There are two main sources, sewage(污水) and industrial waste. As more detergent (洗涤剂)is used in homes, more of it is finally put into our rivers, lakes and seas.  Detergents harm water birds by breaking down the natural substances which keep their feathers waterproof. Sewage itself, if not properly treated, makes the water dirty and prevents all forms of life in rivers and the sea from receiving the oxygen they need. Industrial waste is even more harmful since there are many highly poisonous materials in it, such as copper and lead.

So if we want to stop this pollution, the answer is simple. Sewage and industrial waste must be made clean before flowing into the water reservoirs. It may already be too late to save some rivers and lakes, but others can still be saved if the correct action is taken at once.

1.Pollution in water is noticed ________.

A. when the first organisms are affected

B. when many fish and birds die

C. when poisons are poured into water

D. As soon as the balance of nature is destroyed

2.Living things die in a lake or river because there is no ________.

3.The underlined word “waterproof” in the third paragraph means “          ”.

A. full of water   B. not allowing water to go through

B

It is the duty of every man to work. The life of a lazy man is of no use to himself and to others. The man who is too lazy to work is the man who is generally most ready to beg or to steal. Every boy, when he is young, should learn how to do some useful work.

But it is not enough that a boy should learn some kind of work. He should put his heart and soul completely into his work, and not waste his spare time. “Work while you work and play while you play” is as good a rule for young people as for the old!

There is no better help to diligence (勤奋) than the habit of early rising, and this, just like all other good habits, is most easily formed in youth. There is an English saying, “Lost time never returns”. This means that everybody must be diligent and make good use of his time. One must study hard when one is young so that one may make great progress, succeed in life and become useful to one’s country. Those who are diligent will never become beggars. Therefore, we can say that diligence is the mother of success.

1.From the passage, we know that those who are too lazy to work will_________.

A.waste their time

B.help others

C.become beggars or thieves

D.make progress some day

2.In order to learn to be diligent, it’s important for young people to _________.

A.form the good habit of getting up early in youth

B.learn about some good habits

C.work while they work and play while they play

D.work all the time without playing

3.One can’t be successful in life unless he _________when he is young.

A.is diligent in his study

B.loves life

C.spends some time learning something

D.makes up for his lost time
