ON March 17 there will be an explosion of green across the World in celebration of St Patrick’s Day.The Irish traditionally wear green on this day, as the color is associated with Ireland.
But there are others, non-Irish,who use the occasion to make jokes about the Irish. They use the stereotype(成见)of the Irish as hot-tempered(脾气暴躁的)drinkers,who love to fight and will do anything to avoid a day's work.
However, today the Irish are more often admired for their musical talent and many other abilities. It’s no accident that many of today's most popular music groups, such as singer Enya and rock band U2,are Irish born and bred.Lonely Planet readers even ranked Ireland in 2007 as the friendliest country in the world.
So where did the negative Irish stereotype come from? From the 19th century when it was a bad time to be Irish.
Ireland then was poverty-stricken and starving. Many Irish moved to the United States to escape famine, but there they had to compete---occasionally with their fists for jobs and housing with other immigrant groups, such as the Italians. It was on the US’ streets that the Irish earned their reputation for street fighting.
The stereotype of the Irish as big drinkers may be unfair, but Ireland can boast(为……自豪) its fair share of famous drinks. It was the Irish after all who created one of the world’s best-loved beers,Guinness.
65.What is the story mainly about?
A.How the Irish earned their reputation.
B.The festival-St Patrick’s Day.
C.Jokes about the Irish people.
D.Famous Irish stereotype and the truth.
66.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.St Palrick’s Day is celebrated nowhere else but Ireland.
B.Modern Irish show no interest in drinking alcohol.
C.Part of the stereotype about the Irish is that they are lazy.
D.Irish people usually get hot-tempered when laughed at.
67.Where did the negative Irish stereotype come from?
A.From their everyday behavior toward other people.
B.From the behavior of Irish immigrants to America in the 19th century.
C.From the historical record of 19th century Ireland.
D.From most people’s impression of Irish people

“A very disruptive(扰乱型的)six-year old child kicked my legs and clawed at my hand.” said one teacher. “I broke up a fight but was kicked,” said another. Many people have heard stories like this. But the situation is more worrying still and it involves(涉及) parents.
Every child, regardless of(不管) the surroundings into which they are born, has the right to achieve their potential. And we recognize that, as a nation,it is a long way to achieve this goal. But rights come with responsibilities and what worries people is that we are in danger of ignoring the latter.
Far too many children are behaving badly at school, even to the point of being violent to teachers. This is terrible enough, but it is hard to be surprised since many children are just mirroring the behavior of their parents. Too many are starting school unable to hold a knife and fork, unused to eating at a table, and unable to use the toilet properly.
We are in danger of becoming a nation of families living separate lives under one roof. The bedroom, once a place to sleep, has become the living space for the young. Spending hours in front of computer screens, on social networking sites or being addicted to computer games, children and young people spend little time with their parents. Parents are unable to monitor just what their children are watching.
Schools cannot right the wrongs of society and teachers cannot become substitute (代替)parents. Both parties need to work together. Parents must be helped and given confidence to take back control. They are responsible for setting limits to their children’s behavior and sticking to those limits when things get tough(困难). They are responsible for setting a good example to their children and for devoting that most precious of resources---time---so that children come to school ready and willing to learn.

A classic series of experiments to determine the effects of overpopulation on communities of rats was conducted by a psychologist,John Calhoun. In each experiment,an equal number of male and female adult rats were placed in an enclosure(场地).The rat populations were allowed to increase.Calhoun knew from experience approximately how many rats could live in the enclosures without experiencing stress due to overcrowding. He allowed the population to increase to approximately twice this number Then he fixed the population by removing the children that were not dependent on their mothers. At the end of the experiments,Calhoun was able to conclude that overcrowding causes a breakdown in the normal social relationships among rats,a kind of social disease. The rats in the experiments did not follow the same patterns of behavior as rats would in a community without overcrowding.

The females in the rat population were the most seriously affected by the high population density(密度).For example, mothers sometimes deserted their children, and, without their mothers’care, the children died. The experiments showed that in overpopulated communities, mother rats do not behave normally.Their behavior may be considered diseased and pathological(病理学的).

The leading males in the rat population were the least affected by over population. Each of these strong males claimed an area of the enclosure as his own. Therefore, these individuals did not  experience the overcrowding in the same way as the other rats did..However leading males did behave pathologically at times. Their antisocial(反社会)behavior consisted of attacks on weaker male, female, and immature rats. This unusual behavior showed that even though the leading males had enough living space, they too were affected by the general overcrowding.

Non-leading males in the experimental rat communities also exhibited unusual social behavior. Some withdrew(缩回) completely ,avoiding contact with other rats.Other non-leading males were too active, chasing other rats and fighting each other.

The behavior of the rat population has similarity in human behavior.People in densely(密) populated areas exhibit unusual behavior similar to that of the rats in Calhoun’s experiments. In large urban areas, such as New York City,London, and Cairo, there are deserted children. There are cruel, powerful individuals, both men and women. There are also people who withdraw and people who become too active. Is the major cause of these disorders(混乱)overpopulation?

Calhoun’s experiments suggest that it might be.In any case, social scientists and city planners have been influenced by the results of this series of experiments.

1.Which of the following inferences(推断)can NOT be made from the first paragraph?[来源:Zxxk.Com]

A.Overpopulation causes pathological behavior in rat populations.

B.Calhoun had experimented with rats before.

C.Calhoun’s experiment is still considered important today

D.Stress does not occur in rat communities unless there is overcrowding.

2.The author implies that the behavior of the leading male rats is sometimes similar to that of

A.people who would like to keep to themselves

       B.people who abandon their children

       C.too active people

       D.cruel,powerful people

3.The main point of this passage is that _______________.

A.although rats are affected by overcrowding, people are not

B.overcrowding may be an important cause of social pathology

C.the social behavior of rats is seriously affected by overcrowding

D.Calhoun's experiments have influenced many people

Of all the areas of learning the most important is the development of attitudes. Emotional reactions as well as logical thought processes affect the behavior of most people.

“The burnt child fears the fire” is one instance; another is the rise of figures like Hitler. Both these examples point up the fact that attitudes come from experience. In the one case the experience was direct and impressive; in the other it was indirect and gradual.

The classroom teacher in the elementary school is in strategic position to influence attitudes. This is true partly because children acquire attitudes from those adults whose word they respect.

Another reason it is true is that pupils often search somewhat deeply into a subject in school that has only been touched upon at home or has possibly never occurred to them before. To a child who has previously acquire little knowledge of Mexico, his teacher’s method of handling such a unit would greatly affect his attitude toward Mexicans.

The teacher can develop proper attitudes through social studies, science matters, the very atmosphere of the classroom, etc. However, when children come to school with undesirable attitudes, it is unwise to attempt to change their feelings by criticizing them. The teacher can achieve the proper effect by helping them obtain constructive experience.

To illustrate, first-grade pupils, afraid of policemen will probably change their attitudes after a classroom talk with the neighborhood officer in which he explains how he protects them. In the same way, a class of older children can develop attitudes through discussion, research, outside reading and all-day trips.

Finally, a teacher must constantly evaluate her own attitudes, because her influence can be harmful she has personal prejudices. This is especially true in respect to controversial issues and questions of which children should be encouraged to reach their own decisions as result of objective analysis of all the facts.

A.stress the importance of keeping child from the fire

B.exemplify(例证) the opinion that attitudes come from experience

C.illustrate the important role of attitudes towards study in the early childhood

D.none of the above

2.According to the author, teachers may have great influence on children’s attitudes because___________.

A.they can use marks to judge students

B.they can control students’ behavior

C.they may judge a student from their own likes and dislikes

D.their words are usually respected by the children

3.Through which of the following factor a teacher CANNOT develop proper attitudes of students?

A.Social studies

B.Science matters

C.The very atmosphere of the classroom

D.Criticism of children’s behavior

4.In the author’s opinion, a teacher must constantly evaluate her own attitudes because_______.

A.her personal attitudes may affect her students if she is prejudiced

B.she need to improve herself too

C.she is also often influenced by her students

D.she may not have a constant attitude towards some controversial sues(控诉)

5.The main readers of this passage may be ___________.

A.psychologists conducting complicated experiments

B.parents who have children in school

C.school teachers

D.students in primary school

Michael Fish may soon be replaced as a weather forecaster by something truly fishier---the shark(鲨鱼).
Research by a British biology student suggests that sharks could be used to predict storms.
Lauren Smith, 24, is close to completing her study on shark’s ability to sense pressure. If her studies prove the theory, scientists may be able to monitor the behavior of sharks to predict bad weather.
Miss Smith had previously studied the behaviour of lemon sharks in the Bahamas.
She then used their close relatives, lesser spotted dogfish, for further research at Aberdeen University. Her work---thought to be the first of its kind to test the pressure theory ---- resulted from the observation that juvenile blacktip sharks off Florida moved into deeper water ahead of a violent storm in 2001.
Miss Smith said: “I’ve always been crazy about traveling and diving and this led me to an interest in sharks.”
“I was delighted to have been able to research in the area for my degree. I know there’s so much more we need to understand ---- but it certainly opens the way to more research.”
It has been discovered that a shark senses pressure using hair cells in its balance system.
At the Bimini Shark Lab in the Bahamas, Miss Smith fixed hi-tech sensors to sharks to record pressure and temperature, while also tracking them using GPS (Global Positioning System) technology.
In Aberdeen, she was able to study the effects of tidal(潮汐的) and temperature changes on dogfish----none of which were harmed. She also used a special lab which can mimic(模拟) oceanic pressure changes caused by weather fronts.
She is due to complete her study and graduate later this year. She says she will be looking for a job which will give her the chance to enrich her experience of shark research.
