In spite of the uncertainty of the economy, the movie industry has been stricken by a box-office outburst. Suddenly it seems as if everyone is going to the movies, with ticket sales this year up 17.5 percent, to $1.7 billion.
And it is not just because ticket prices are higher. Attendance has also jumped, by nearly 16 percent. If that pace continues through the year, it would amount to the biggest box-office increase in at least two decades.
Americans, for the moment, just want to hide in a very dark place. People want to forget their troubles, and they want to be with other people. Helping feed the outburst is the mix of movies, which have been more audience-friendly in recent months as the studios have tried to adjust after the discouraging sales of more serious films.
As she stood in line at the 18-screen Bridge theater complex here on Thursday to buy weekend tickets for “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience,” Angel Hernandez was not thinking much about escaping reality. Instead, Ms. Hernandez, a Los Angeles parking lot attendant and mother of four young girls, was focused on one very specific reality: her wallet.
“Spending hundreds of dollars to take them to Disneyland is ridiculous right now,” she said. “For $60 and some candy money I can still be a good mom and give them a little fun.”
A lot of parents may have been thinking the same thing Friday, as “Jonas Brothers” sold out more than 800 theaters, and was expected to sell a powerful $25 million or more in tickets.
The film industry appears to have had a hand in its recent good luck. Over the last year or two, studios have released movies that are happier, scarier or just less
depressing than what came before. After poor results for a rush of serious dramas built around the Middle East, Hollywood got back to comedies.
1.Which of the following is not a reason for the improvement of the movie industry?
A.A growing number of people are going to the cinema.
B.People are richer with the development of economy.
C.More comedies are made than serious films.
D.People have to pay more to watch a movie.
2.Ms. Hernandez purchased the movie tickets because ________.
A.she tried to escape reality
B.she was a crazy movie fan
C.she was fond of Disneyland
D.she wanted to please her kids
3.According to the text, which of the following number is not used to describe the shooting up of the movie industry?
A.17.5% B.$1.7 billion C.$60 D.$25 million
4.The passage is developed mainly by ________.
A.presenting the effect and analyzing the causes

People live in different parts of the world and lead different types of lives. Their lifestyles change across the different areas in the world. What is the difference between a city and country life? Let us see.
We can see the modern facilities everywhere in the city like the Internet, telephone, television and satellite communication facilities are widely available in the city. A majority of families in the city are enjoying this technological advancement.
The increasing population has led to an imbalance in human population. More and more industries have led to environmental problems like pollution.
However, the rise in economic growth has resulted in a self-centered nature of society. While technological advancement has brought the world closer, human beings have gone far apart from each other.
The country is not crowded with constructions all over. Houses are rather widely spaced with enough room for fields and gardens. The country is the only area fortunate enough to house the greens. People in the country live in close to nature. Apart from people, there is room for pets and animals that help keep a balance in nature.
Due to a lesser number of people in the country, it is not overcrowded by people. These areas have least amounts of pollution. Pollution is less also because of very less number of industries in the country. The life may not be as enjoyable as that in the city, but the people there are generous, kind and friendly. The country is the one where humanity(人性) is still alive.
Every coin has two sides to it. While we can’t enjoy expensive things and technology in the country, it is rich in its relationship with ‘nature’. The city life is modern in technology and career opportunities. However, the falling humanity and a bad environmental balance affect the bright future of city life.

The Chilean earthquake, measuring 8.8-magnitude, which struck early Saturday morning, released 500 times the energy of the 7.0-magnitude quake that hit Haiti (海地)last month, a geophysicist told CBS’ “The Early Show”.Tsunami warnings were issued for much of the Pacific, including Hawaii, following the quake that struck near the Chilean coast.
"When the earthquake occurred, it moved the land and then it moved the water causing the tsunami," said U.S.Geological Survey geophysicist Jessica Sigala."And the coastal areas of Chile have already noticed the wave heights up to about 7 feet."
Sigala said Hawaiians can expect to see the waves from this tsunami around 11:20 a.m.local time (about 4:20 p.m.ET)."So we have to wait and see how big the waves will be."
"It's not so much the height [of the wave] but it's the width, it's how long it lasts, and then it's also the speed at which it's traveling," said co-anchor Kelly Cobiella."Correct me if I'm wrong, but these waves are traveling at the speed of a jetliner, about 500 miles per hour?"
"That's correct. It's a big block of water coming onto the land," Sigala said.
Chile has also experienced several aftershocks following the quake.
"Aftershocks are definitely another concern," said Sigala."We always see aftershocks with a large quake and a shallow quake.Unfortunately, this one was both. And as of right now, we've located about maybe 15 aftershocks and those are of the larger kind.I'm sure they felt much more than that.
"A shallow earthquake just means that it happened pretty close to the surface," said Sigala."And because of that the energy is really close to the surface, where all the buildings and people are."
50 deaths caused by aftershocks have been reported, according to the national emergency agency, adding the estimated casualties to 960.

Right and Wrong
Suppose you work in a library, checking people's books as they leave, and a friend asks you to let him steal a hard-to-find reference book that he wants to own.
You might hesitate (犹豫)to agree for various reasons. You might be afraid that he'll be caught, and that both you and he will then get into trouble. You might want the book to stay in the library so that you can read it yourself.
But you may also think that what he proposes is wrong -- that he shouldn't do it and you shouldn't help him. If you think that , what does it mean, and what, if anything, makes it true?
To say it's wrong is not just to say it's against the rules. There can be bad rules which stop what isn't wrong -- like a company rule against criticizing the boss. A rule can also be bad because it requires something that is wrong -- like a law that looks down upon black people in hotels and restaurants. The ideas of wrong and right are different from the ideas of what is and is not against the rules.
If you think it would be wrong to help your friend steal the book, then you will feel uncomfortable about doing it" in some way you won't want to do it, even if you are also unwilling to refuse to help a friend. Where does the desire not to do it come from? What is its motive (动机)behind it?
There are various ways in which something can be wrong, but in this case, if you had to explain it, you'd probably say that it would be unfair to other users of the library. They may be just as interested in the book as your friend is, but read it in the reference room, where anyone who needs it can find it.
These thoughts have to do with effects on others -- not necessarily effects on their feelings, since they may never find out about it, but some kind of damage. In general, the thought that something is wrong depends on its impact (影响力)not just on the person who does it but on other people.
77.The following may be the reasons why the librarian dos not want to help his friend except that
A.he is afraid that his friend might get into trouble.
B.he himself might get into trouble.
C.he believes it is wrong to help one’s poor friend.
D.he wants to read the book himself.
78.Why does the author give some examples of bad rules?
A.Because those rules are said to be strongly negative(否定).
B.Because he wants to show that rules are not the criteria(标准)for judging right or wrong.
C.Because those rules are made in order to stop what is wrong.
D.Because he wants to support the argument that stealing a book is not a crime.
79.In the sentence “What is its motive(动机)behind it?” (Paragraph 4), “it ” refers to .
A.the “it ” in the phrase “the desire not to do it”.
B. “the desire” in the phrase “the desire not to do it”.
C.the idea of Paragraph 5.
D.the idea of helping the friend.
80.According to the passage, the author would judge what is wrong
A.by what is or is not against the rules.
B.by its impact on other people.
C.by one’s thoughts and feelings towards it.
D.by the kind of damage it does to othes.
