Your website is an electronic meeting place for your family, friends and potentially, millions of people around the world. Best of all, you may not have to spend a cent. The Web is filled with all kinds of free services and all it takes is some time and creativity.

   Think of your home page as the starting point of your website. Like the table of contents of a book or magazine, the home page is the front door. Your site can have one or more pages, depending on how you design it.

   While web pages vary greatly in their design and content, most use a traditional magazine layout. At the top of the page is a banner(横幅) GRAPHIC. Next comes a greeting and a short description of the site. Pictures, text, and links to other websites follow.

   Before you start building your site, do some planning. Think about whom the site is for and what you want to say. Next, gather up the material that you want to put on the site. Draw a rough layout on a sheet of paper.

   While there are no rules you have to follow, there are a few things to keep in mind: Start simply. If you are too ambitious at the beginning, you may never get the site off the ground. You can always add to your site.

   Less is better. Most people don’t like to read a lot of text online. Break it into small pieces.

   Smaller is better. Most people connect to the Internet with a modem（调制解调器）. Since it can take a long time to download large image files, keep the file sizes small.

A new enemy is threatening Japanese traditions: leisure（闲暇）. As part of its attempt to increase imports, the government is trying to get people to work less and spend more. The workers are disgusted.

The figures support the western prejudice（偏见） that the Japanese are all work and no play. In 1999, 11-year-old Kevin Stephan was a bat boy for his younger brother's Little League team in Lancaster, New York. It was an early evening in late July. The sun shone at an angle  across the field. The game unfolding in baseball time. Kevin was standing on the grass away from the plate, where another youngster was warming up. It was a good thing, for a good kid. Kevin wasn't just a volunteer for his brother's baseball team --- he was a Boy Scout, one who went on to achieve Scouting's highest rank, Eagle. He became a volunteer junior firefighter, learning some of the emergency first-aid techniques that had saved his life. He studied hard in school and was saving money for college by working as a dishwasher in a local restaurant. He liked the people, but the work could be hard and pretty routine. In high school I joined the girl athletic club. At our first track meet, I entered for the long jump, but was made an alternate（替补）for the 50 yard dash. I didn’t like it, since I was better at long distance, but they assured me I would never have to run; they just ran out of alternate.
