There are many types of reports. A report is simply an account of something that has happened. The commonest are news reports. We get them in newspapers, over the radio and on television Sometimes cinemas also show us newsreels.
The main purpose of a newspaper is to provide news. If you examine a newspaper closely,   you will find that there are all types of news, accidents, floods, fires, wars, fashions, spoils,
books, etc. The news covers everything that happens to people and their surroundings. Some-
times there are news items which are very amusing.
A news report is usually very short, except when it is about something very important, but it contains a lot of information. It is also written in short paragraphs. The first paragraph is in fact
a summary of the news item. It gives all the necessary information -what, when, where, how
and why. The other paragraphs give full details of the subjects. There may also be interviews
with people. The words actually spoken by them are written in inverted commas(引号).
Often there are photographs to go with the news to make it more interesting.
53. The easiest way to get today's news is _______

A. they cost very little
B. they are easy to get

It is natural that children are curious about the world around them. For example, they want to know how their hearts beat. They want to know why the ocean water tastes salty.

As children grow up, they become curious about different kinds of things. When they are babies, they are interested in the parts of their bodies and in the smiles of their mothers. They become interested in the physical world around them: the plants, the animals, the sky. Later, they become interested in the things that people have made: wheels, bicycles, cars. And when they are adults, their curiosity continues. Sometimes this curiosity leads to a career (生涯、职业) in science.

Scientists spend their lives trying to find out about the world. Those who work with the earth sciences study the earth, the oceans, and the skies. Other scientists who study living things work with the biological sciences. A third group of scientists study the physical sciences, e. g. physics, chemistry .

These scientists have already discovered a lot about our world. For example, they tell us why your heart beats fast when you run. They say that when you are quiet, your heart normally beats sixty-five or seventy-five times a minute. Your heart is a pump (泵) that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood carries oxygen and nutrition. When you run, your muscles work very hard and use the nutrition that the blood carries to them. The muscles need oxygen, too . So your brain sends a signal to the heart. The signal means that the muscles need more nutrition and oxygen. Then the heart beats fast and sends blood quickly to the muscles. It may beat 90 to 140 times a minute.

Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why does the ocean water taste salty” scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask , “What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get saltier every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.

We know a lot about our world, but there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious.

There are three separate sources of danger in supplying energy by nuclear power (原子能)

First, the radioactive material must travel from its place of production to the power station. Although the power stations themselves are strongly built, the containers used for the transport of the materials are not. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely road or rail. Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even through, heavily populated areas.

Second, there is the problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce wastes that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years. It is impossible to make these wastes non-radioactive, and so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buried under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the sea. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers.

Third, there may occur the danger of a leak(泄漏) or an explosion at the power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it does not provide a serious objection to the nuclear program. However, it can happen.

Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster(灾难) is extremely high.

71. Which of the following is FALSE?

   A. It is possible that a leak or an explosion occurs at a power station.

   B. It is unusual for radioactive materials to be transported across land.

   C. The containers are likely to be broken by an earthquake.

   D. Nuclear wastes remain dangerous in most cases for many years.

72. The author thinks that the ways to store nuclear wastes are ___ .

   A. easy      B. impossible        C. reasonable      D. ineffective

73. What do we learn from the last paragraph?

   A. The power station is a safe place.

   B. The dangers of nuclear energy can be prevented.

   C. The general public are strongly against the nuclear program.

   D. By itself, none of the three dangers is very likely to cause much worry.

74. What is this passage about?

A.Uses of nuclear power.                B.Dangers from nuclear power.

C.Public anger at nuclear power.          D.Accidents caused by nuclear power.

75. As for the possible dangers of nuclear power, ______.

   A. none of them can be completely avoided

   B. effective measures have been taken to avoid them

   C. man will never be able to do anything about them

   D. one is usually the cause of another
