“My kids really understand solar and earth— heat energy,”says a second grade teacher in Snugus.California.“Some of them are building solar collectors for their energy course.”These young scientists are part of City Building Educational Program(CBEP),a particular program for kindergarden through twelfth grade that uses the stages of city planning to teach basic reading, writing and math skills, and more.

The children don't just plan any city. They map and analyze(分析)the housing, energy, and transportation requirements of their own district and foretell its needs in 100 years. With the aid of an architect(建筑师)who visits the classroom once a week, they invent new ways to meet these needs and build models of their creations.“Designing buildings of the future gives children a lot of freedom.”says the teacher who developed this program.“They are able to use their own rich imagination and inventions without fear of blame, because there are no wrong answers in a future context. In fact,as the class enters the final model-building stage of the program,an elected‘official’and‘planning group’make all the design decisions for the model city, and the teacher steps back and becomes an adviser.”

For your information if you should ever be in the same situation, this is how my son was able to survive for five nights without a phone or money as a teen runaway. He was actually more prepared for the adventure than I thought.

He did not have any money but begged.Someone gave him as much as $40.00.He was also seen in front of Safeway where he was able to get free food.

In his backpack were newspaper clippings(剪报)from the free newspapers advertising different locations, things to do, head shops in the area.Anything that was free clinics, shelters(庇护所)and food. There was one small book on how to be homeless and another piece of paper with a listing of the homeless shelters.

When he arrived into a town he would talk to the homeless people to find out where he could stay.Interestingly enough, the adult homeless wanted nothing to do with underage kids. They would tell him where the “homeless teen camps” were or how to get in touch with them.

While looking for him, most of the teens that we talked to did not want to give us any information, but once we got into a conversation with them, they became forthright. They also would give us their opinion on how we should be parenting our kid.

My son claimed he did not hitchhike(yeah!!).He took the bus from place to place. The bus for teens I think is roughly one dollar.

He went to the library and checked his My Space. He did receive the messages we had written him but did not reply.

A teen runaway is not a crime in California, therefore, the police or law enforcement is not actively looking for your kid. There are over 28,000 teen runaways in California alone. Our son was found by a friend and picked up by the police in the Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. The Haight is a favorite for homeless teen runaways and somehow they all know it.I think they know they can survive there. He told us he met kids from all over the country.I always felt like he was hiding from us or watching us and it seemed like we were always one day behind him.

(1)

This passage is written to ________.

[ ]

A.

tell teens to prepare themselves to be runaways

B.

tell parents not to worry too much about their runaway son

C.

show parents what to do with their runaway son.

D.

get attention from the society to runaways

(2)

Why did the runaway boy have newspaper clippings in his backpack?

[ ]

A.

Because he wanted to get information about how to beg for money.

B.

Because he wanted to know if his parents were looking for him.

C.

So that he could have information about how to survive as a runaway.

D.

So that he could use them to warm himself for the cold night.

(3)

The underlined word “forthright” in paragraph 5 probably means ________.

[ ]

A.

direct and honest

B.

interested and helpful

C.

friendly but dishonest

D.

pleased and sorry

(4)

What can we know from the last paragraph?

[ ]

A.

The police found the author's runaway son.

B.

There are over 28,000 runaway teens in the Haight.

C.

There were many shelters for the runaways in the Haight.

D.

It was hard for the author to find back her son.
