A lot of management training each year for Circle K Corporation, a national chain of convenience stores. Among the topics we address in our course is the retention(保护力) of quality employees-a real challenge to managers when you consider the pay scale(标准)in the service industry. During these discussions, I ask the participants(参加者), “What has caused you to stay long enough to become a manager?” Some time back a new manager took the question and slowly, with her voice almost breaking, said, “It was a $19 baseball glove.”

Cynthia told the group that she originally took a Circle K clerk job as an interim(临时的) position while she looked for something better. On her second or third day behind the counter, she received a phone call from her nine-year-old son, Jessie. He needed a baseball glove for Little League. She explained that as a single mother, money was very tight, and her first check would have to go for paying bills. Perhaps she could buy his baseball glove with her second or third check. When Cynthia arrived for work the next morning, Patricia, the store manager, asked her to come to the small room in the back of the store that served as an office. Cynthia wondered if she had done something wrong or left some part of her job incomplete from the day before. She was concerned and confused.

Patricia handed her a box. “I overheard you talking to your son yesterday,” she said, “and I know that it is hard to explain things to kids. This is a baseball glove for Jessie because he may not understand how important he is, even though you have to pay bills before you can buy gloves. You know we can’t pay good people like you as much as we would like to; but we do care, and I want you to know you are important to us.”

The thoughtfulness, empathy and love of this convenience store manager demonstrates vividly that people remember more how much an employer cares than how much the employer pays. An important lesson for the price of a Little League baseball glove.

Among many of the problems in the service industry, talked about in this passage, is         .

A.how to ensure his employees’ high pay

       B.how to attract more customers

C.how to look carefully after the employees

A.had mastered all the courses for the manager

B.had already formed good relationship with the employees

C.know the way how to deal with her employees

       D.had her own personal experience

This passage shows us that to run a business well it is necessary for managers to let their employees know         .

A.how much they can get for their job.

B.what good positions they can get later

C.they are very necessary to the business

D.they are nice as well as useful

The story told in this passage tells us that employees care about         .

"A survey was conducted in Shanghai where interviewees were asked if they wanted to be a factory worker. One percent of all people interviewed said “YES," Wang Hongjun, a technician, said, raising his voice for dramatic effect."But I can tell you, only a small part of that 1 percent are telling the truth."

I've met colorful people like Wang all over China. They are cynical (玩世不恭的) yet warmhearted, plain spoken but smart. And many of them are confined (局限于) to work in factories.

Wang is a top technician but also represents manual factory workers, who are China's most important natural resource.Their energy is powering China's economic boom, and their muscle is turning the wheel of the world's factory.

But does their unskilled labor give their life meaning? At school, did they tell their friends: "When I grow up I want to work in a factory making socks?" Did you?

Factory work has always been a stepping-stone from farm life to the city and a modern life. It's been happening for centuries, but today, with our space-age technology, it's outdated.Earning 1,200 yuan ($169) per month working in a factory is better than that on a farm, but as Wang points out, it's not a dream career. There should be better ways to earn your rice.

Many modern factories no longer have production line workers.Robots do the assembly (装配).People just do the monitoring. In this age of technology, in which China is now working smarter and not just harder, why are people still standing in production lines?

But life is cheap in China. So why not continue to exploit the low-cost labor situation and keep the economy growing fast, some entrepreneurs may ask.

How many people surveyed really like to be factory workers?

       A.One percent

       B.Only a small part

C.Only a small part of that one percent

       D.The writer didn’t mention it.

Which is NOT the writer's opinion of factory workers?

       A.cynical                B.unimportant

       C.warmhearted           D.plain spoken

Wang Hongjun is a person who is

       A.difficult to get along with

       B.humorous but serious

C.cynical but warmhearted, plain spoken but smart

D.full of energy but doesn't want to work hard

Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Factory workers make contributions to China's economic boom.

B.Working in a factory is better than that on a farm.

C.Factory workers are satisfied with their living conditions.

D.Some entrepreneurs exploited the low-cost labor situation.

The writer uses          to begin the passage.

A.a lot of figures        B.many examples

       C.some dialogue         D.the result of a survey

A woman came out of her house and saw three old men sitting in her front yard. She said, "I don’t think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat."
"Is the man of the house home?” they asked. "No", she replied, "He’s out." "Then we cannot come in", they replied.
In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened. "Go to tell them I am home and invite them in!" The woman went out and invited the men in. "We do not go into a house together," they replied. "Why is that?" she asked.
One of the old men explained that their names were Wealth(财富), Success and Love. Then he added, "Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home."
The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed and he suggested inviting Wealth to fill their home with wealth. And his wife wanted to invite Success; but their daughter-in-law suggested they should invite Love so that their home would be filled with love. At last the husband said to his wife. "Go out and invite Love to be our guest."
The woman went out and asked the three old men, "Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest."
Love got up and started walking toward the house.
The other two also got up and followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success: "I only invited Love, Why are you coming in?"
The old men replied together: "If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would have stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever He goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!"
