读写任务:(共25分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
It was the end of my first day as waitress in a busy New York restaurant. My cap had gone away, and my feet hurt. The loaded plates I carried seemed to be heavier and heavier. Tired and discouraged. I didn’t seem able to do anything right. As I wrote out a check for a family with several children who had changed their ice-cream order a dozen times, I was ready to quit. Then the father smiled at me as he handed me my tip. “Well done”, he said, “you’re looking after us really well.” Suddenly my tiredness disappeared. I smiled back, and later, when the manager asked me how I’d like my first day. I said, “Fine!” Those few words of praise had changed everything. Praise is like sunshine to the human spirit; no flower can grow without it. And yet, most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold wind of criticism; we are unwilling to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise. Why when one word of praise can bring such benefit?
In fact, to give praise costs the giver nothing but a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort but will reward both the giver and the recipient with a happy day. Let’s learn to give credit (赞扬) to people around us.

Zhou Jidong, director of the Legislative Affairs Office of the Beijing municipal government (市政府),
told a press conference last Thursday that his office has completed the draft (草案) regulations on firework
safety supervision.
Under the draft regulations, setting off fireworks will be allowed in the capital city's eight downtown
districts from the Eve of the Lunar New Year to Lantern Festival 15 days later. When the draft regulations
were posted on the municipal government's website for suggestions, local residents gave a total of 969 pieces
of advice, with 70 per cent in favour of lifting the ban. Related surveys suggest local people who want to
light fireworks during Spring Festival range from 50.4 per cent to 86.3 per cent.
In fact, the voice of opposition and criticism has never ended since the municipal government introduced
the ban in 1993, considering pollution, noise, fire worries and personal injuries caused by letting off fireworks.
Opponents accused the government of introducing the ban only for the sake of facilitating its management
role while disregarding the will of the people. Worse, they say, the ban threatened to break down the age-old
traditions of celebrating Spring Festival among Chinese people.
Partly due to this endless objection, about 106 out of a total 282 Chinese cities that had followed Beijing's
lead in banning fireworks have already dropped the ban.

I'd like to tell you that I managed to achieve a full score of 120 points in Canada, where the IBT TOEFL
was launched earlier this year. I decided to take the test only one month before the due date in June.
You may wonder how I did it. Now let me tell you. I went over several TOEFL vocabulary books and
practiced a lot of model tests on the computer. Apart from my preparations for the test, my solid language
skills also led to my new TOEFL success. In 2004, I participated in the third "21st Century Cup" National
High School English Speaking Competition held by China Daily as a Junior 3 student and won the top prize.
Testing speaking skills is an added part of the new TOEFL test. My good performance in this test mostly
resulted from my speech practice before I moved to live and study in Canada last year. To prepare for the
speaking competition, my teacher asked me to make speeches in the canteen at lunch breaks. Surrounded
by many students, I heard them saying, "What's wrong with that girl? Is she crazy?" I had to be brave and
confident enough to stand on the stage when the day came.
I also believe that Rome wasn't built in one day. To learn English well, we have to keep practicing: listening,
speaking, reading and writing.
Yours,
Chang Mengsu

[阅读材料]
The Japanese pay much attention to the luck of telephone numbers. For he bathhouse, for example, they like to use 4626, because when read in Japanese, it has the same pronunciation as “have a good bath”.For the clothes shops and butcher’s, they like 4129 better than any other number because this number can either be read as “good dress”or “good meat”.
Since these numbers are connected with something nice, people can remember them very easily. So they have become advertisements for the shops. On the other hand, there are also telephone numbers which are regarded as forbidden by the Japanese people.1564, for example, has the sound of “kill people”while the number 4219 has that of “people die”.
At present there are about forty-four million telephones in Japan, yet it is almost impossible for everyone to get a lucky telephone number. So these numbers have become commodities and can be sold as goods. The price can reach as high as 222 thousand Japanese yen(日元).

Mother's Day was coming, a man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away.
As he got out of his car, he noticed that a young girl was sitting on the curb sobbing(啜泣).He asked her what was wrong with her and she replied, “I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars.”
The man smiled and said, “Come on in with me.I'll buy you a rose.”
After they went in, he bought a rose for the little girl and ordered flowers for his own mother.
As they were leaving, he offered to ride the girl home. She said, “Yes, please! But can you take me to my mother?” “To your mother?” the man was a little puzzled but didn't say anything. She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave(坟墓).
The man was shocked and returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bunch of flowers and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house.
