　　One of Britain's most popular reality TV programmes has returned to our screens for a fifth series．The Apprentice sees 16 ambitious individuals competing for a job with electronics tycoon(巨头)Sir Alan Sugar．

　　The Apprentice is a BAFTA award-winning British reality television series in which fl group of aspiring young businessmen and women compete for the chance to win a￡100,000-a-year job as“apprentice”to the British business tycoon Alan Sugar, The Baron Sugar．Winners have gone on to work at Amstrad, an electronics manufacturing company founded by Sir Alan(but since sold to BSkyB), or one of Sugar's other companies, Viglen, Amsprop or Amshold．The Apprentice, billed as a“job interview from hell”, is similar in format to the American series of the same name, which stars entrepreneur Donald Trump．

　　With endless talk of financial crisis, redundancies(过剩)and cut-backs, it may come as no surprise that thousands of brave hopefuls applied for the show．The chosen 16 will compete in a series of business tasks and do their best to escape elimination．Not one of them wants to hear the fateful words：you're fired．

　　It should also be noted that this year's apprentices are not going, to be allowed to forget the terrible economic climate quite so easily．At the launch of this year's TV show, Sir Alan announced that some episodes have been“specifically made towards recognition of what difficult times we are in”．

　　The tasks will as usual be tough tests of business wisdom。team-working and leadership skill．They will also make for some funny viewing．British viewers will be shaking their heads in disbelief at the crazy decisions of the wanna be apprentices．But perhaps the most entertaining feature of the show will be watching the hopefuls squirm(局促不安)and quarrel in the。boardroom．It is here they will have to explain just why they have failed each task so badly．

　　What drives people to take part in the show is difficult to say．Some are clearly motivated by the promise of a six-figure salary and some claim they want the experience of working with a successful businessman such as Sir Alan．One thing is for sure．the contestants will all gain some level of celebrity．The show is a regular ratings winner．

　　To date, there has been one big winner and that is the show's creator, Mark Burnett．Originating in the US, The Apprentice's winning format has been copied all over the world and with the hype(炒作)surrounding this latest series, it looks as though the show will have success for many years to come．

　　When Johnny Cash sings, people listen．His big, deep voice rumbles out of radios and jukeboxes across North America．His records sell by the million．Country music fans everywhere know his big hits．They love songs like “Hey Porter” “Ring of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blue”．

　　Johnny Cash sings about a hundred concerts a year．People like what they hear－and what they see, too．Rugged and big-shouldered, the singer stands six-two without his black boots on．He has a two-hundred-pound package of muscle and talent．And that scar(疤痕)on his cheek? It’s a bullet hole, of course!

　　In the minds of most people, Johnny Cash is “Mr．Tough(violent)Guy”．He’s an ex-drug addict(上瘾者)who was once put in prison．His grandmother was an Indian．To keep from starving, he once had to live on wild rabbits killed from forty feet away with a knife．Some people say he even killed a man．

　　In fact, most of the Johnny Cash story is just that－a story．True, years ago he had a “drug habit” for a short time．He “popped” pills．But he never used heroin or other “hard” drugs．Sometimes he’d go wild and get locked up for a few hours．But he never served a prison sentence．There’s no Indian blood in his veins．He’s been a killer only in song．As for the“ bullet hole”, it’s an old scar left by a doctor who opened a cyst(囊肿)．

　　People who know Johnny Cash well say he’s a“ gentle guy”, a “generous guy”－anything but a “tough guy”．How did the stories get started? Some of them, like the story about the “Indian grandmother”, he made up long ago to add excitement to his career．Others, like the“ bullet hole”, simply got started．Now there’s little the singer can do to change people’s minds．“They just want to believe it, ” he says．

　　Basketball was his path out of poverty(贫穷)．Had he not played the game, he would be Allen Iverson the car repairer, dustman or even drug dealer(毒贩), copying his father’s lifestyle and those of most of his childhood friends．

　　But he saw fame and success in a basketball and the 28-year-old has built his kingdom on the courts of NBA．Though he was suffering flu, he scored a season-high 50 points as Philadelphia 76ers beat Atlanta Hawks 98-86 on November 30．He is now the league’s leading scorer with an average of 28.4 points per game．

　　Unlike other NBA stars, his success is not due to his size．At 1.83 metres, Iverson is no giant but he isn’t afraid to challenge bigger guys．“I just hit shots, ” he said．“The basket sometimes looks like an ocean．”

　　He is known as “the answer” and 76ers’ fans hope he can be the answer to their prayers for an NBA championship．They might be in luck as Iverson has had to find solutions to tough problems ever since he was a child．

　　“I used to come home and there would be no lights, no food, only unpaid bills, ” he remembers of his childhood．Never having met his real father, Iverson became man of the house at the age of 12 when his stepfather was arrested．

　　But his mother, despite being poor, never gave up hope for her son．“I have never looked up to anyone apart from(除……之外)my mum．She means everything to me, ”he said．“She inspired me and she made me believe I could be somebody and I could do something with my life．”
