Teenagers are under a lot of pressure to be thin. They resort to starving, vomiting and eating only diet foods to try and be thin. Television is a big influence on them. They watch shows like Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place and feel they need to look as thin as the actresses on these shows. Society is brainwashing young people into believing that being thin is important and necessary.

Diet commercials are constantly appearing on our television screens telling us that once we lose weight, we will be happy. While you’re standing at the grocery store you are surrounded by magazines claiming to have the newest and best diet. Each month another new diet appears claiming to be the diet to end all diets. If diets really worked, then why are there so many of them? The reason a new diet pops up each month, is that last’s month’s diets did not work. The truth of the matter is that DIETS DON’T WORK.

The diet and fashion industries are not totally to blame for society’s obsession with thinness. We are the ones keeping them in business. We buy into the idea that we can attain the “ideal” body image. We allow ourselves to believe the lies being thrown at us constantly. We are throwing away our hard earned money trying to live up to the standards that society has set for us. It’s unfortunate, but in today’s society, people have forgotten that it’s what’s inside a person that counts, not what’s on the outside. We need to start loving and accepting each other for who we are, not what we look like.

Once again, I would like to stress the fact that diets don’t work. Eating three healthy meals a day, a few snacks and doing moderate exercise, will allow your body to go to its natural set point. Next time you decide that you are going to start another diet because you feel you are too fat, stop, sign up for a self-esteem class instead. That would be money well spent.

You are what you eat and fats are a main food for Asia’s fast-food generation. Dr.Chwang, director of the Department of Food Nutrition, says children are consuming more meat and soft drinks. That is a thorough departure from the traditional diet of vegetables and rice and little meat.” They like big pieces of fried meat with a soft drink. So although they may eat the same volume of food, their calorie intake(卡路里摄入量) has increased. Now that 40 to 45 percent of their calories come from fat,” says Chwang.

Although on the whole Asians tend to thinness, culture--namely Asians’ hospitality--is a reason for the fatness of today’s generation, according to Chwang. “Asian people love food,” she says.” Eating and drinking are important social and family functions.” In the past, however, big meals were only hosted on special occasions, as people were more careful with money. In today’s climate of wealth and remarkable consumption,10-course meals are no longer reserved for significant occasions.

“In the past, people had four or more children--now, they have one or two, so they tend to spoil them,” says Chwang. “The earliest way is to give them quality food. Parents think feeding them well is showing their love. They feel bad when their children look thin.”

When describing the physical condition of most overweight Asian children, Chwang says: “there is a clear relation between fatness and indoor play. Children get fat because they don’t move, and eventually, they don’t want to move because they are fat.”

Thanks to technology, a growing army of children prefer video games to old outdoor sports. “What do children do when watching TV or sitting in front of the computer playing video games? They eat chocolate and drink Coke,” says Chwang.

Even before they start school, many young girls worry that they are fat. But a new study suggests watching a movie starring a stereotypically(模式化地)thin and beautiful princess may not increase children’s anxieties.

Nearly half of the 3 to 6 year old girls in a study by Professor Stacey Tantleff-Dunn and doctoral student Sharon Hayes said they worry about being fat. About one-third would change a physical feature, such as their weight or hair color.

The number of girls worried about being fat at such a young age concerns Tantleff-Dunn because of the potential effects later in life. Studies have shown young girls worried about their body image are more likely to suffer from eating disorders when they are older.

The encouraging news for parents is that taking their young daughters to see the new Disney film “The Princess and the Frog” isn’t likely to influence how they see their bodies.

“The media have a great effect on how young girls see their bodies. That’s why it’s important for parents to use movies such as ‘The Princess and the Frog,’ to start conversations with their children about weight, skin color and their views of beauty. They can explain that princesses’ tiny waists are not realistic for girls and that children don’t need Cinderella’s golden hair or Snow White’s porcelain(瓷制的) skin to look good,” Tantleff-Dunn said.

“We need to help our children challenge the images of beauty, particularly thinness, that they see and idolize, and encourage them to question how much appearance should be part of their self-worth,” said Tantleff-Dunn. “We should help them build a positive self-image with an appreciation for many different types of body features.” And as their children’s most important role models, parents also should avoid criticizing their own bodies.

1. Tantleff-Dunn worries that young girls caring too much about their appearance may          .

A. have diet trouble in the future

B. cause trouble when they are older

C. have mental problems later in life

D. have difficulty in communication

2. What is especially considered as beauty by girls according to the passage?

A. Having black hair.                          B. Having a slim body.

C. Having golden skin.                       D. Having big bright eyes.

3.Parents can help kids build a positive self-image by      .

A. encouraging kids to act as role models

B. preventing kids seeing beautiful models

C. telling kids the importance of appearance

D. avoiding complaining of their own bodies

4. The writer writes the passage mainly to

A. explain the meaning of beauty

B. introduce a new research finding

C. stress the influence of media on girls

D. teach girls how to become a princess

第三部分  阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

It seems like every little girl dreams of becoming a model. They want to be thin and pretty like the models they see on television and in magazines. Often the desire becomes an obsession (无法摆脱的思想) and young girls see “thinness” as being a needed characteristic. The obsession of many young girls over their appearance or weight has led to a growing number of people developing an eating disorder.

Eating disorders are a serious health problem. Three of the most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating or compulsive eating disorder. According to Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, a person with anorexia “refuses to maintain normal body weight for age and height” and “weighs 85 percent or less than what is expected for age and height.” A person diagnosed with bulimia has several ways of getting rid of the calories such as binge eating, vomiting, laxative misuse, exercising, or fasting. The person might have a normal weight for their age and height unless anorexia is present. The signs of a compulsive eater include eating meals frequently, rapidly, and secretly. This person might also snack and nibble all day long.

There are many reasons that can contribute to the cause of eating disorders. One of the main reasons seems to be the obsession over every little pound a person is wearing.

There are other possible causes to this widely known health problem. Everyone has the desire to look like the actors and actresses they watch on TV or in magazines but, in reality, it just will not happen for most of us.

An unfavorable relationship a person has with others is also a contributing factor to disordered eating habits. The world is so competitive that any mention from parents, peers, significant others, or co-workers about a person’s weight or appearance can lead to the start of an eating disorder.

There really is no single reason why a person acquires an eating disorder.  Many factors are considered when making a diagnosis for a person with this problem. Causes like the ones mentioned above play such an important role in eating disorders. Is it really so important that in order to look like the super models people are willing to give up food and starve themselves to death for a little satisfaction on the outside? The look of a person on the inside is what really matters.

1. This text is mainly about _______.

       A. how girls lose weight quickly                            B. why girls dream to be models

C. how teenagers control their weight                      D. why a person acquires eating disorder

       A. binge eating                                                      B. bulimia nervosa

C. anorexia nervosa                                                            D. compulsive eating disorder

3. The underlined word “unfavorable” most probably means _______.

       A. harmonious           B. poor                          C. healthy                      D. special

4. What is author’s attitude towards the phenomenon?

       A. Inner beauty is really important.

B. All girls should dream to be models.

C. People needn’t take eating disorder seriously.

D. It is worth to starve for satisfaction on the outside.
