　　I am terrible oh TV．I don't sit straight and I don't talk clearly．It bothers, because I know inside I am smart, sensitive and sincere．Television can make any fool look like an intellectual, but I come over as dishonest．After a disastrous TV show last year, when I called the interviewer by the wrong name, I was reluctant to do broadcasting again．

　　Now, I will have my first novel out next month, which is called Do It Again, and the advertising people tell me I must go on TV to promote it．That is why I find myself practising my television interviewing technique with two consultants from Public Image Ltd．

　　“He blinks(眨眼)a lot, doesn't he?” says Diana, the speech specialist, studying my image on a video monitor．“And his crossed legs look defensive．But the voice isn't bad．” Jeannie, who is introduced to me as Public Image's image consultant, takes a step backwards to study the general posture．“Needs to get his bottom back in the sofa．And the jacket makes him look a bit deformed．Where does he get his clothes from?”

　　“Honesty is the most important thing,” Says Diana．“We don't want to turn people into actors．We want to bring out their personality．Then most importantly, there are the three E's：Energy, Enthusiasm and Enjoyment．And do try to stop blinking．”

　　And so our practice interview begins．“So, what can you tell us about your book, Martyn?” “Umm…” A long pause．“Errr…” A longer pause．“Tee hee, hargh…” A foolish giggle．“All right,” says Diana patiently, “We'll try that again．” We try it again, many, many times, each time trying to solve a different problem that I have．On the second run-through, my crossed legs keep moving up and down, which makes me look as if I want to run away(I do, I do)．On the third run they are uncrossed, but my hands are clenched on my lap．On the fourth my hands are fiddling with my ears．

　　But Diana is patient and gives me a lot of advice．She is very good at her job because on the final run-through, after three hours or so, I really don't look too bad．Steady gaze, breathing clear and no blinking．Not perfect but not bad．

　　I'm bursting with energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment and I'm talking a lot of nonsense, but you'd hardly notice．When you watch people on TV, you'll see a lot more just like me．

Miss Green was watching TV. 　 Are you the type of person who always says“yes”？I’ve come to learn that it is very important to learn to say NO！It’s okay. People are still going to like you. They may even respect you more because they know you are honest.

　 I，m not saying to say“no" to someone who really needs your help. I’m talking about refusing that meeting that you really do not want to attend or that birthday party that you don’t want to be a guest at.

Think for a moment how you feel when you say YES to something that you really don't want to do. If you’re like I once was，you can’t sleep at night and you think about it too much.

It weighs on your mind. You try to find ways out. Whatever you’re saying to yourself，if you really wanted to go，you wouldn’t have all of these thoughts.

　 So，why not just say NO from the beginning? Maybe you feel like if you don’t show up at the meeting（by the way，it is not one you must attend) your boss isn’t going to like you or your co-workers won’t respect you. Maybe you feel as if your mom，dad or sisters won’t love you as much if you don’t do everything for them that they ask every occasion.

　 If these people are your true friends，family members，or a good boss，they will like or love you the same no matter what. People treat you the way you teach them to，and if you’re someone who always says“yes" then that’s what they，re expecting.

　 You need to do what is right for you. Of course we do have real obligations in life to fulfill，but we do not have to do everything others want us to do.

　　Writing articles about films for The Front Page was my first proper job．Before then I had done bits of reviewing－novels for other newspapers, films for a magazine and anything I was asked to do for the radio．That was how I met Tom Seaton, the first arts editor of The Front Page, who had also written for television．He hired me, but Tom was not primarily a journalist, or he would certainly have been more careful in choosing his staff．

　　At first, his idea was that a team of critics should take care of the art forms that didn’t require specialized knowledge：books, TV, theatre, film and radio．There would be a weekly lunch at which we would make our choices from the artistic material that Tom had decided we should cover, though there would also be guests to make the atmosphere sociable．

　　It all felt like a bit of dream at that time：a new newspaper and I was one of the team．It seemed so unlikely that a paper could be introduced into a crowded market．It seemed just as likely that a millionaire wanted to help me personally, and was pretending to employ me．Such was my lack of self-confidence．

　　Tom’s original scheme for a team of critics for the arts never took off．It was a good idea, but we didn’t get together as planned and so everything was done by phone．It turned out, too, that the general public out there preferred to associate a reviewer with a single subject area, and so I chose film．Without Tom’s initial push, though, we would hardly have come up with the present arrangement, by which I write an extended weekly piece, usually on one film．

　　The space I am given allows me to broaden my argument－or forces me, in an uninteresting week, to make something out of nothing．But what is my role in the public arena? I assume that people choose what films to go to on the basis of the stars, the publicity or the director．So if a film review isn’t really a consumer guide, what is it? I certainly don’t feel I have a responsibility to be ‘right’ about a movie．Nor do I think there should be a certain number of ‘great’ and ‘bad’ films each year．All I have to do is put forward an argument．I’m not a judge, and nor would I want to be．
