As many as one in five US teenagers have some degree of hearing loss, according to researchers. They say the problem is growing.

“Teenagers really don’t pay attention to how much noise they are exposed to(接触),” Josef Shargorodsky of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston told Reuters. “Often people won’t notice it, but even very little hearing loss may influence language development,” said Shargorodsky, one of the researchers.

The study compared surveys from the early 1990s and the mid-2000s. Each included a few thousand teenagers. In the first survey, about 15 percent of teenagers had some degree of hearing loss. Some 15 years later, that number had risen by a third, to nearly 20 percent.

“This certainly is big news,” said Alison Grimes, an ear doctor. “Hearing loss is very common in old people,” Grimes said, but she added that it was worrying to see it happen in the younger age group.

In babies and young children, hearing problems are known to slow language development. The science is less clear for teenagers, but it is easy to imagine how being hard of hearing could influence learning, said Grimes.

The reasons for the rise are still unclear. When researchers asked teenagers about noise exposure – on the job, at school or from activities, for example – the teenagers didn’t report any change. But Shargorodsky said that might not be true. “We know from before that it is difficult to ask this age group about noise exposure – they underestimate it.” Few people would call it noise when they listen to music on their MP3 player, for example. “There is a difference between what we think is loud and what is harmful to the ear,” said Grimes.

Although it’s not clear that the MP3 players cause teenagers’ hearing loss, Grimes said it was still a good idea to turn down the sound and take short breaks from listening.

To me, life without music would not be exciting. I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, and listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone's life, whether he realizes it or not. Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music. Would the feelings, the moving plot, and the greatest interests, be so exciting or dramatic? I'm not sure about it.

Now, we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning----the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely, we discover them in our everyday life too----in the rhythm of the sea, the melody of a bird in the woods and so on. So music surely has meaning for everyone, in some way or other. And, of course, it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.

It is well said, “Through music a child enters into a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong.”

1. What dose the writer say more about in the text?

A.Life full of music.

B.Life without music.

C.The importance of music.

D.The development of music.

2. From the text, we learn that many people________.

A.don't realize the importance of music

B.get along quite well without music

C.go to the concert instead of enjoying music

D.think music would be less exciting than films

3. What does the underlined word “melody” mean in the text?

A.flying             B.looking           C.singing            D.living

4. From the last paragraph, we learn that music________.

A.is very important, especially for children

B.is very necessary for our everyday life

C.can make our life exciting and dramatic

D.can enter into another beautiful world

Having one of those days—or weeks—when everything seems to annoy you? Even if you do nothing about it, your bad mood (心情)will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster, often within a day or two.

Walk it off

Exercise is the most popular bad-mood buster. A person who’s in a bad mood has low energy and high tension. Taking a fast ten-minute walk, or taking some quick exercise can do wonders towards changing that bad mood.

Tune it out

Listening to your favorite music for a while can also make tensions go away quickly, because music starts associations with past positive experiences we’ve had.

Give yourself a pep talk

Stop and listen to what’s on your mind. Bad moods are often started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper, including the pessimistic(悲观的)messages you’ve been giving yourself and then give optimistic answers.(“I still don’t have a job.” Vs” I have two interviews next week.”)

Reduce your stress

Relaxation techniques are wonderful mood-lifters. There include de3ep breathing, stretching and visualizing, all of which sound complicated(复杂的)but aren’t. One easy way to visualize, close your eyes and picture a favorite place, such as the beach. Another simple way to unhappiness is to make a to-do list. One reason for being in a bad mood is feeling you have no options. By taking control over certain areas, you realize you’re not helpless. You can make changes in your mood and life.

Avoid things that won’t improve your mood

TV may not help much: you need to increase your energy level and stimulate(刺激)your mind-something that the TV show “Neighbors” won’t do. And before you reach for that piece of cake and coffee, think about how mood and food are linked. Sugar and caffeine contribute to depressed moods. The better choice? Research shows that carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta(面食), produce a calming effect on people who have a desire for them.

1.Which of the following may help us stop a bad mood?

A.Draw a picture of something complicated.

B.Put more sugar into your coffee.

C.Writing down negative thoughts.

D.look ahead and write something positive.

2.Why is it suggested that you close your eyes and picture the beach?

A.It helps raise your spirits.

B.It brings us a new technique.

C.It is not complicated to do so.

D.It is an area to be easily controlled.

3.What can we infer from the passage?

A.You don’t have to be nice to your neighbors

B.you often feel powerful when in bad mood

C.Some TV shows won’t energize you

D.Slow exercise can gets you out of bad mood

4.Which would be the best title for this passage?

A.How to Beat a Bad Mood

B.Energy Level and Stress

C.Bad Mood and Our Life

D.How to Control Your Feeling

Egypt: Bridging the Gap between School English and Real English

Teaching English in Egypt in general and in my town Damietta in particular, is mainly directed towards helping students to pass their final exams. Unfortunately, most teachers do not adopt a long -term approach that guarantees that their students will be able to use English outside the classroom. So students only concentrate on one skill which is writing. Thus their listening and speaking skills are disabled. What is important to them is to pass the exam which is primarily based on writing .Teachers are not only concentrated with providing their students with questions that are similar to those of the final exam, particularly General Secondary Education Certificate (GSEC) Examination, so students spend most of their time answering typical exam questions.

Most students' scores are high; a lot of students get full marks. However, few students are able to communicate in English because their role plays. As a result, a lot of students complain that they are unable to understand and talk fluently with native speakers of English.

To enable students to communicate freely and spontaneously(自然地) in English, I bring features of real communication into language practice, I always ask students about their own experiences, and suggest groups of students practice what they have learned outside the classroom. This helps lower-achieving students absorb language. Furthermore, role play is a very effective way to improve speaking skills particularly if it is connected to the experience of the students.

C. The questions that  are similar to those of GSEC

D. The ability that will be used outside the classroom

4.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Most of the students can't get high marks but can communicate with the native speakers of English.

B.  Communicating skill is more important than writing skill.

C. Role play connected to the speaker's experience is more effective

in improving his skill.

D. The lower--achieving students can do better in speaking skill than the upper achieving students.

5.Who will responsible for the gap between school English and real English?

A. Their parents      B. The students    C. The school          D. The education sys tem
