Last weekend, a girlfriend that I've known since college was visiting. As we left the airport, we had to
stop at the grocery for a case of diet soda. On our way to lunch she asked me "Do you think that drinking diet soda makes you fat?"
"Depends on whom you ask," I said. Last year, researchers from the University of Texas Health
Science Center in San Antonio reported that adults who drink diet soda did not lose weight. They were
actually more likely to become overweight than those adults who did not drink soda at all or those that
drink regular soda. In fact, the more diet soda consumed, the more likely someone would become
overweight. To be specific, there was a 41% increase in the risk of being overweight for every can or
bottle of diet soda consumed daily.
In this study, researcher Sharon Fowler followed over 600 normal weight adults ages 25-64 over a
seven to eight year period of time. She has a number of theories as to why weight gain may be a result of
drinking a zero-calorie beverage:
1.Artificial sweeteners may affect your body’s ability to judge how many calories you consume. When no calories are consumed, the body may continue to crave(渴望) what it expected and could lead to
overeating.
     2.  Some people give up regular sodas to justify their favorite dessert and still take in too many calories. A regular soda contains about 150 calories while your dessert may be double that in calories easily.
     3. For others who were gaining weight already, switching to diet soda wasn’t enough to stop the gain.
Since her first piece of research, Fowler has tracked another 2000 people with similar results. Do the
faux sweet products induce people to want more sweets? Fowler suggests that perhaps it’s not the soft
drinks themselves that cause weight gain but that there is some link between diet soda drinking and
overweight.
1. Why do people give up regular soda and take diet one according to Fowler's research?
A. Some want to gain weight.
B. Some want excuses to have dessert.
C. Some mistake diet soda as no-calorie drink.
D. Diet soda can help people lose weight.
2. Which of the following statements is the result of Fowler's research?
A. Diet soda can directly cause people to gain weight.
B. Diet soda increases the risk of becoming overweight.
C. Diet soda actually contains more calories than regular soda.
D. Those who drink diet soda are 41% more likely to become fat.
3. Which can NOT explain the link between diet soda and overweight?
A. People overeat to satisfy the body’s needs for calories that diet soda lacks.
B. People also have foods containing more calories when they choose diet soda.
C.Diet soda has little effect on those who have become overweight already.
D.Diet soda is a sweetener that increases the body’s needs for calories.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Only overweight adults are involved to see if diet soda can help lose weight.
B. The research lasted many years and over 2000 people took part in it.
C. Diet soda has opposite effect on those who take it to lose weight.
D. Sharon Fowler is the first to find drinking diet soda leads to overweight.
5. What does the underlined word "induce" probably mean?
A. cause
B. reduce
C. advise
D. inspire

My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where we live. Two dog walkers passed
by and we heard one of them say, "Never seen that dog around here before."
We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling(蹒跚) painfully up the hill. We bent
down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar. There was a phone
number on the collar, but no one answered.
The dog was painfully thin. It didn't have many teeth left and, well, it just seemed done.
Julie ran home to get some of our dog's food while I tried to encourage the dog to come along with
me. Julie got home and back again when I was only half way there. So, we sat down on the sidewalk
while our new friend made short work of the food.
Eventually we got her home. We gave her a blanket, more food, kept her warm and wondered what
to do next.
After trying for many times we got a response from the number. A lady came around with a bunch
of flowers for us. She explained that Tara had been her father's dog. She was very old and should
probably be put to sleep, but the lady just couldn't bring herself to do it. So, Tara was safely returned
home.
Here is the truth of the story:
Actually Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to
come back, but I wasn't hearing anything that made that sound likely.
I was about to turn and go when an old, worn out dog walked between us and collapsed. Suddenly
we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right
before us and we had to work together to help it.
We did help it. And here am I writing the story in my own home, in my own family.
In the song "Love Is Not a Fight" Warren Barfield talks about marriage. At one point he sings, "And
if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door."
Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs.
1. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The two dog walkers didn't like the dog.
B. The old black dog was sick and weak and couldn't walk.
C. After finding the dog, the writer phoned its owners.
D. Most of the dog's teeth had been pulled out by someone.
2. We can infer from Paragraph 4 that ________.
A. Julie bought some food for the dog
B. the writer had his own pet dog
C. the dog didn't go with the writer
D. the dog didn't eat any of the food
3. After they got the dog home, the couple ________.
A. decided to raise the dog
B. took good care of the dog
C. found out that its owner was a lady
D. found it hard to get to sleep
4. The underlined part "our problem" in the passage refers to the fact that ________.
A. the writer didn't want to take Julie's advice
B. Julie disagreed with the writer's travel on business
C. an old and worn out dog appeared in front of them
D. the couple had some trouble with their marriage
5. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Helpful Couple.
B. An Angel Dog.
C. Saving the Dog.
D. A Famous Song.

When I arrived in Beijing nearly three months ago, the unexpected happened.

Before coming to China's mainland, I had lived in the Asia-Pacific for over three years—South Korea, the Philippines and Taiwan.

When I left Taipei in 2010 for graduate school at home in Canada, I was extremely sad: I

wasn't ready to leave Asia. The day I landed at Montreal's Trudeau Airport, I was determined to go back. Would it be in a year after I finished my program? Two? Surely no longer than three. Eventually, no doubt.

I took a 12-month master's in journalism at Western University (then called the University of Western Ontario), an excellent school in London, Ontario.

Throughout the school year, my body was in Canada; my mind clearly wasn't. After graduating, I worked as a researcher and journalist in Quebec City and Montreal. I was lucky to land a job right out of school. Even though I was back in Canada for over a year, I remained unhappy. I spent much of my time devouring news from China and studying Chinese.

After a year of work, I bought a ticket to Beijing. Finally, after two long years, I would return to Asia. I couldn't be happier. I was thrilled. That is, however, until I arrived.

After embracing the city the first few days—sightseeing and meeting friends--I became a hermit (隐士 ), spending a fair part of each day in the hotel. I didn't want to go out. I didn't want to go out there. I felt sad. I had little energy. What was happening?

I speak Chinese at a low-intermediate (中下)level. My reading ability is pretty good, so

street signs and restaurant menus aren't always a barrier. I've been to China before and lived in the area for years. So what's the problem?

Was I in culture shock? How could this be? Not me. Yes5 me.

I spent my days reading up on local news back home. Quebec--my home province-was in the process of an election campaign.

64.    Why was the writer extremely sad when he left for Canada?

A. He missed his life in Asia.

B. He would leave his hometown.

C. It would be hard for him to return to Asia.

D. It would be difficult for him to find a job in Canada.

65.                                                          What does the underlined word "devouring" mean in the passage? A. Spreading blindly.                                                          B. Reading eagerly.

C. Announcing unexpectedly.                     D. Leaking intentionally.

66.Before he returned to Asia, the writer_____

A. knew little about China

B. had worked in Canada for one year

C. had studied in Canada for nearly two years

D. couldn't understand restaurant menus in Chinese

67.    What would be the best title for the passage?

A. A Colorful Life.                                     B. A Big Decision.

C. A Tough Adjustment                             D. A Language Barrier.

Before graduating from a Zhejiang provincial university, Li Chun went to Shanghai last May. On arrival and after a friend’s recommendation, she became a student journalist at a large newspaper. “ I find myself having no competitive edge at all. Almost all the journalists in the newspaper graduated from journalism schools at famous universities. Only I come from a provincial university, and to be more specific, a university of science and engineering, which makes my situation even more embarrassing” This means Li has to make greater efforts, and as a student journalist, Li hasn’t any formal job credentials. When having an interview, she has to bring her ID card and newspaper clippings(剪辑的东西) to show her published articles, while explaining the situation to the interviewers to clear up any suspicions. “During one interview, I forgot to bring the newspapers and my ID card, and the interviewer refused to believe me, even after a considerable amount of explanation. I waited outside his office for three hours until he left work. Maybe it was my sincerity that moved him and finally he accepted my interview.”

Li was not familiar with the transportation in Shanghai and at first didn’t even know how to use the subway. However, as a journalist, she must travel from place to place. “ If I make an interview appointment, I often need to check the map to see how I can get there. I often leave for my destination one hour earlier than my estimated time I would spend on the way, in case something unexpected happens.”

After several weeks’ travelling, Li has now made herself familiar with Shanghai’s transportation system and has also gradually mastered the interviewing skills necessary when doing her many independent interviews. This is the first fieldwork practice of Li. Although she used to work in the Students’ Union at university and has the experience of being a tutor(a private instructor), a student for many years, Li seldom leaves the limits of school to engage in more social activities. However, as a senior, she faces the coming graduation and job-hunting problems, and believes that it is time she plans for her future. She also thinks that although journalistic fieldwork doesn't suit her special major training very much, it doesn’t matter, for a student is supposed to learn more about the ability of self-study from university education. Consequently, she feels OK if at present or in future she is required to engage in jobs that don’t have such close friendships with her major. Because life and work is already a process of continuous study.

44. According to the passage, Li Chun _______.

A.        doesn’t regret choosing journalistic fieldwork
