Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized (分类) as “honor” help you create this life of good feelings.
Here’s an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.
Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item.If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk’s mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement.Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thanks us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.
Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?
In the first case where we don’t tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen.Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect.We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others.
In contrast bringing the error to the clerk’s attention causes different things to happen.Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable.Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased.Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.
There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions.Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions.Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it’s easy to think and act honorably again when we’re happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it’s started, it’s easy to continue.Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.

A.self-respect B.financial rewards
C.advertising ability D.friendly relationship
2.How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?
A.We’ll be very excited B.We’ll feel unfortunate

A.How to Live Truthfully B.Importance of Peacefulness

Losing Jenna would be like losing a very close sister.
“Of course, we’ll still be friends when we’re eighty-two,” Jenna announced loudly
The next year, in Grade Four, we met Jamie. The three of us soon became close friends. We played together almost every day. I thought even time couldn’t pull us apart, but I was sadly mistaken.
The three of us started fighting a lot. Before Christmas, We had a really big fight, and Jamie and Jenna were against me, both saying I was bossy (专横的). I felt helpless and lonely. I thought Christmas would be horrible!
I was surprised when Jenna came to my house and gave me a terrible Christmas card she had made for me. I was so sure that she was still disappointed with me.
“Wow,” I said, breaking the silence as we stood on either side of my front door. “Thanks.”
“Okay…well… I have to go,” she said softly.
“Okay. See you later then…” and I closed the door.
“Who was that at the door?” my mom asked.
“It was Jenna, my classmate.” I said.
The card started off with “Merry Christmas”, but then it said, “I am so glad we’re friends. I am sorry about what I said when we were fighting. A fight won’t stop us from being friends. Besides, we said we were going to be friends even when we’re eighty-two.”
I stopped reading and started laughing. I couldn’t believe I had forgotten what she said that day in the backyard. I couldn’t believe I had been so selfish in trying to make my friends feel sorry for me.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? How about an ice-cream taster?
Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice-cream. Just ask John Harrison, an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers to be sure of a product’s quality. During his career Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream — as well as for developing over 75 flavors (味道).
Some people think that it would be easy to do this job: after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No — there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field.
In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses 60 ice-cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12℉. Harrison explains, “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir it, creating ice-cream soup.”
While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Does the product have the color expected from that flavor?” Next it’s time to taste!
Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy — working at one cool job.
56. What is John Harrison’s job?
A. An official. B. An ice-cream taster.

57. According to John Harrison, to be qualified in the “cool field”, it is helpful to ______.
A. keep a diary of work B. have new ideas every day
C. have a degree in related subjects D. find out new flavors each day
58. What does Harrison do first when testing ice cream?
A. He examines the color of the ice cream. B. He stirs the ice cream.
C. He tastes the flavor of the ice cream. D. He lets the ice cream warm up.
59. Which of the following is probably the best title of the passage?
A. Tasting with Eyes B. Flavors of Ice Cream

查看习题详情和答案>>The seventh game of any play-off series is always special, win or lose. It always has an
edge-of-your-sear, heart-in-your-throat intensity unlike any other. One play, on e shot, one save
may make all the difference.
But there are other things that make our games and sports so special.
For example, where we play our sports is often one of the best things about the games. Think
of it: What is as perfect as a fresh sheet of ice after the Zamboni machine(赞博尼磨冰机)has
made its final pass and left the surface as smooth as glass ? Or a swimming pool on a summer
morning, clear and calm, before the first swimmer has broken the water?
To me a freshly mowed and lined soccer lied is as beautiful as any painting. So is a golf course in the early morning, or in the evening when the sun is setting.
The stuff we play with is wonderful, too. Is there anything that feels as good in your hand as a brand-new baseball? Or a nice leather football? Grab hold either, and you just have to play a game of catch.
The clothes are good too. Sports uniforms are much more colorful and comfortable than regular clothes. Maybe that’s why so many kids stay in their sports uniforms long after their games are over.
No shoes feel better on my feet than my golf shoes. Maybe that’s because I know I am going to have fun whenever I put them on.
We talk so much about winning in sports. But if you are the kind who is happy only when their team wins, then sports will let you down. After all, too team or player wins all the time.
But if you can learn to enjoy parts of sports that have nothing to do with winning or losing-the feel of a favorite bat or stick in your hand, or how your heart beats when you put on your uniform and run onto the field-then sports will always be fun. Whether you win or lose.
