(10·四川B篇)
Boiler rooms are often dirty and steamy, but this one is clean and cool. Fox Point is a very new47-unit living building in South Bronx, one of the city’s poorest areas. Two-thirds of the people living there are formerly (以前) homeless people, whose rent is paid by the government. The rest are low-income families. The boiler room has special equipment, which produces energy for electricity and heat. It reuses heat that would otherwise be lost to the air, reducing carbon emissions(碳排放)while also cutting costs.
Fox Point is operated by Palladia, a group that specializes in providing housing and services to needy, people. Palladia received support from Enterprise Community Partners (ECP), which helps build affordable housing by providing support to housing developers.
ECP has created national standards for healthy, environmentally (环境方面) clever and affordable homes which are called, the Green Communities Standards. These standards include water keeping, energy saving and the use of environmentally friendly building materials. Meeting the standards increases housing construction costs by 2%, which is rapidly paid back by lower running costs. Even the positioning of a window to get most daylight can help save energy.
Michael. Bloomberg, New York's mayor, plans to create 165,000 affordable housing units for500,000 New Yorkers. Almost 80% of New York City’s greenhouse-gas emissions come from buildings, and 40% of those are caused, by housing.. So he recently announced that the city’s Department of Housing and Preservation and Development (DHPD) , whose duty is to develop and keep the city’s supply of affordable housing, will require all its new projects to follow ECP’s green standards.
Similar measures have been taken by other cities such as Cleveland and Denver, but New York’s DHPD is the largest city developer of affordable housing in the country.
45. What is the purpose of describing the boiler room in the first paragraph?
A. To explain the measures the city takes to care for poor people.
B. To suggest that affordable housing is possible in all areas.
C. To show how the environment-friendly building works.
D. To compare old and new boiler rooms.
46. What is an advantage of the buildings meeting the Green Communities Standards?
A. Lower running costs.
B. Costing less in construction.
C. Less air to be lost in hot days.
D. Better prices for homeless people.
47. It can be learned from the text that,
A. New York City is seriously polluted
B. people’s daily life causes many carbon emissions in New York City
C. a great number of people in New York City don't have houses to live in
D. some other cities have developed more affordable housing than New York City
48. What is the main purpose of this text?
A. To call on people to pay more attention to housing problems.
B. To prove that some standards are needed for affordable housing.
C. To ask society to help homeless people and low-income families.
D. To introduce healthy, environmentally clever-and affordable housing.
查看习题详情和答案>>Airtight plastic bags can help farmers protect their harvests without the use of harmful chemicals. These bags are designed to keep air out of crops in storage. Using them is a simple way to fight insects and keep crops fresh.
Ten countries in West and Central Africa are involved in a project to improve the storage of cowpeas, also
known as black-eyed peas. Farmers can lose much of the harvest to insects called bruchids (豆象), which grow from egg to adult in a few weeks and then lay forty to sixty eggs. They can destroy the whole harvest within months.
Farmers can sell their crops immediately. But selling at harvest time means more competition and lower prices.Or they can use pesticides (杀虫剂) to kill the bugs. But a crop scientist Dieudonne Baributsa says, “They end up misusing or overusing the pesticide. In Nigeria, they have reported a lot of cases of death. They usually call cowpeas ‘killer beans’ in Nigeria.”
Mr. Baributsa is a researcher at Purdue University in Indiana, America. The project is called PICS---Purdue Improved Cowpea Storage. He says the storage bags are thick enough that any insects already in the cowpeas willdie from a lack of oxygen. The lack of air will also help prevent the growth of bacteria that can ruin the harvest. The bags cost about two dollars each. Mr. Baributsa says that is not much, especially if it means farmers can wait long enough to get a better price for their crops. The bags are produced locally. Donors currently support the project, but the groups involved are working to build a lasting market for the bags because donation for the project will not lastforever.
A company based in the United States called GrainPro makes another kind of airtight bags. These are called SuperGrainbags. Phil Villers, the company’s president, says storing a harvest safely not only helps farmers earn more money, but also reduces the amount of the harvest loss to insects, spoilage and mishandling. “What does not get wasted and eaten means it is possible to feed a hungry world,” said Phil Villers.
61. What is the best title for this passage?
A.Simple bags save the harvest. B.Plastic bags kill the insects.
C.Bruchids do harm to the harvest. D.Pesticides threaten food safety..
62.It can be inferred that bruchids_______.
A.steal the stored crops for their future. B.survive in airtight plastic bags.
C.grow slowly. D.breed fast.
63.How does the name of “killer beans” come out?
A.The beans are poisonous by nature. B.People eat beans that are infected by bugs.
C.Farmers use chemicals to kill bugs improperly. D.Bugs ruin beans within a short time.
64.Which statement of the following is NOT true?
A.Any insects in the bags will soon use up the air and then die.
B.The airtight plastic bags currently sold on the market do not last long.
C.The project provides the farmers with the bags for free at present.
D.What farmers can earn from the use of the bags is more than they have to pay.
65.According to the passage, the storage bags can do the following EXCEPT______.
A.double the total harvest B.raise farmers’ income
C.help fight world hunger D.help project crops from being spoiled

Eragon is just a regular farm boy in a land called Alagaesia-until he finds a dragon's egg.
In the new movie Eragon, based on the book by Christopher Paolini, evil strangers working for an evil
king come looking for the egg and kill Eragon's family. With the help of dwarfs, and Saphira the dragon,
Eragon must learn how to defeat the king and save his laud.
Designer Dragon
Animators (动漫画家) couldn't exactly model Saphira after a real dragon. So they got inspiration from
animals. Michael McAlister says when Saphira is on the ground, she walks a little like a lion. In the air, she's
a cross between a condor (秃鹰) and a fighter jet. And her eyes are part lizard, part dinosaur, and part human.
Success Story
Author Christopher Paolini started writing Eragon when he was 15 years old. Now 23, Paolini gives you
tips to achieve your dreams before you grow up!
-Research First
"Learn about what you want to do," Paolini says. He read books about creating characters and plots before
he started writing.
-Get Support
Paolini kept his writing a secret from everyone but his parents. That way, no one could tell him he was too
young to be an author. "Find people who will support and encourage you," he says.
-Practice
Whether they're writers, musicians or athletes, successful kids put lots of energy into their talent. "To rise
to the top, make your skill your daily focus," Paolini says.
-Don't Quit
"So many times when I was writing Eragon, I was an inch away from giving up," he says, "I'm so glad I
didn't." Instead, he spent three and a half years writing and rewriting until it was ready for publication.
B. the struggle between a farm boy and some bad people
C. a boy's interesting experience
D. an imaginary story between a farm family and a king
B. at most three
C. at least four
D. more than ten
B. we can only depend on ourselves to be a successful person
C. genius is more important than regular practice to successful people
D. failure is the mother of success
