Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer(温度计)for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear. _____76____. We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.

Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale.

Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide._____77_____ .

The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury(水银)inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid ) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts(收缩). That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube._____78______.

First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap ; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw(吸管) through the nail hole.

______79______.

Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water lever easily.

______80____.

As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the lever in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water lever in the straw each morning for a week.

A.We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things

in our daily lives.

B.Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way

when they are heated or cooled.

C.Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.

D.The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will

expand and rise even higher.

E.They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100degrees.

F.Take wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is struck into the cap to seal把..粘住) them together.

G.People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the

world.

We want our kids to use the Internet, and yet we worry. But we can find ways to direct our children away from what’s wrong, towards what’s best.

The most effective way to monitor a kid’s online activity is to monitor it. That is, to stand beside the computer from time to time when your child is at it.

Carleton Kendrick suggests that accompanying your child to a website he often visits is no different from "checking out a playground where your kids go, to see that it’s safe."

In any e-mail program, a look at the senders’ addresses can give you a good idea of your kids’ communicators .

America Online allows parents to limit incoming e-mails to a finite list of communicators. Some parents also type their kids’ names into a search engine to discover what they’re saying on websites or message boards.

Understand that as kids get older and demand more privacy, some basic know-how comes into play. America Online has been particularly effective in helping parents give their children an online experience: a "kids-only" AOL account prevents young users from all but full time-monitored chat rooms. Katherine Borsecnik , president at AOL, notes, however, that "if I have a child who’s doing a report on breast cancer, I might want to turn off the filters (过滤器)" since kids-only access would block websites with even straight medical information about breast.

Many parents don’t know that a simple click on the "history" tab will produce a list of links to every website the computer         . Bonnie Fell opens all the files that have been downloaded by her two sons at least once a month―"whether the boys are there or not. Although they know it." As Jim Lynch, who manages message boards for the Boston-based Family Education. com, says, "Parents are the basic filter."

The first bullet "train designed and manufactured in China with a speed of 300 kilometers per hour roiled off the production line on Saturday morning. The train was the latest model in the country' s China Railway High-speed (CRH) Series. This marks that China has joined a leading world club after Japan, France and Germany to become the fourth country capable of turning out such high speed trains. Previously, China' s fastest selfdeveloped trains ran at a service speed of up to 250 km per hour.

Those trains, which presented to public on April 18, served the Beijing-Harbin, Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Guangzhou routes. The new streamlined train was made of aluminum alloy(铝合金). The train body was the lightest of its kind in the world; Such a design was for the sake of energy economization. The train' s power was 12.7 kilowatts, lower than other high-speed trains, which was normally about 15 kilowatts.

The new train, which features a bar in the dining car and double-faced LCD TV screens in the first-class cars, was equipped with shock absorbers between carriages. As the train is running at a high speed, the shock absorbers are used to reduce shocking force and rocking of the train body. A train with eight carriages could seat about 600 passengers. They were expected to run on the 115-km Beijing-Tianjin route starting from August before the Beijing Olympic Games. It would reduce the journey time from the current 80 minutes to around 30 minutes.
