摘要:A.clear B.silly C.slow D.smart Keys: CABDA CDCAB DBCAD BCAAD I was six when I joined my father and two elder brothers at sunrise in the fields of Eufaula, Okla. 1 the time I was eight I was helping Dad fix up old furniture. He gave me a cent for every nail I 2 out of old boards. I got my first 3 job, at JM’s Restaurant in town, when I was 12. My main responsibilities were 4 tables and washing dishes, 5 sometimes I helped cook. Every day after school I would 6 to JM’s and work until ten. Even on Saturdays I 7 from two until eleven. At that age it was difficult going to work and 8 my friends run off to swim or play. I didn’t necessarily like work, but I loved what working 9 me to have. Because of my 10 I was always the one buying when my friends and I went to the local Tastee Freez. This made me 11 . Word that I was trustworthy and hard-working 12 around town. A local clothing store offered me credit 13 I was only in seventh grade. I immediately 14 a $68 sports coat and a $22 pair of shoes. I was 15 only 65 cents an hour, and I already owed the storekeeper $90! So I learned 16 the danger of easy credit. I paid it 17 as soon as I could. My first job taught me self-control, responsibility and brought me a 18 of personal satisfaction few of my friends had experienced. As my father, 19 worked three jobs, once told me, “If you 20 sacrifice and responsibility, there are not many things in life you can’t have. How right he was.

Professor Martin's report says that children who attend a number of different schools, because their parents have to move around the country, probably make slow progress in their studies. There are also signs, says Professor Martin, that an unusually large number of such children are mentally affected.

The professor says, "It's true, my personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. However, our findings are based on research and not on any personal feelings that I or my assistants may have on the subject."

Captain Thomas James, an Army lecturer for the past 20 years and him self a father of two, said," I've never heard such rubbish. Taking me for ex ample, no harm is done to the education of my children who change schools regularly-if they keep to the same system, as in our army schools. In my experience, I've known quite a few of them-Army children are as well-adjusted(调整)as any others, if not more so. What the professor doesn't appear to appreciate is the fact that in such situations children will adapt(适应)much better than grown-ups."

When this was put to Professor Martin, he said that at no time had his team suggested that all such children were backward or mentally affected in some way, but simply that in their experience there was a clear tendency(倾向).

"Our findings show that while the very bright child can deal with regular changes without harming his or her general progress in studies, the majority of children suffer from constantly having to enter a new learning situation."

1.According to this passage, Professor Martin's personal feeling_______.

    A. is the opposite of what his report has shown

    B. is in a way supported by his research

    C. has played a big part in his research

    D. is based on his own experience as a child

2.From the passage, we can conclude that Captain James's children_________.

    A. have been affected by changing schools

    B. go to ordinary State schools

    C. can get used to the Army school education

    D. discuss their education regularly with their father

3.About children and grown-ups, Captain James says that children______.

    A. are generally well-adjusted

    B. are usually less experienced

    C. can adapt much more easily

    D. can deal with changes quickly

4.According to Professor Martin, _________ suffer from changing schools regularly.

    A. Army children

    B. quite a few children

    C. bright children

    D. few children

Think for a moment about the teachers you have had at school or at university. Which one did you like best? And why? Were the teachers you liked best also the ones who were the best teachers, in your opinion? Before you read any further, consider for a moment the qualities that make a teacher outstanding. (杰出的;出类拔萃)

Some very common answers to this question are that teachers need to love their students, that they need to have an expert (专家的) knowledge of their subjects, and that they should devote themselves completely to their work. All of these ideas are, of course, true to a certain extent (程度) but they are perhaps a little too simple.

It is impossible for anyone to love everyone they know, and teachers deal with a very large number of students over the years. On the other hand, teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they are interested in them as people and in the development of both their brains and their characters. A deep knowledge of the subject is especially important, but equally (同样的) important is the ability to pass that knowledge on to the students effectively—a teacher needs to be trained in the skills of teaching. These skills include how to explain ideas in a clear way, how to help students to use the knowledge they are given, how to control a class and so on. Finally, teachers have to devote a lot of time and energy to their work, of course. However, they are also models that their students must follow; so it is important that they should be well-balanced people with interests outside their school work— family, friends, hobbies, and so on. A teacher who only lives for work is likely to become too narrow-minded.

(1)The writer suggests that you think about the teachers who have taught you at school in order that __________.

[ ]

A. you may love them better than before

B. you'll get something you can write about them

C. you might know the qualities that a good teacher should have

D. you might get something for which you will praise them

(2)It is impossible for every teacher ________ according to the article.

[ ]

A. to have a good knowledge of the subject he teaches

B. to have ways to pass the knowledge of his subjects on to his students effectively

C. to be a good example for his students to follow

D. to love all the students he has taught or is teaching

(3)In the sentence "teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they are interested in them as people…" "they" and "them" refer to ___________.

[ ]

A. teachers and teachers B. students and students

C. teachers and students D. students and teachers

(4)The skills of teaching include __________.

[ ]

A. how to explain ideas in a clear way

B. how to devote a lot more time to their work

C. how to control a class

D. A and C

(5)A teacher who ___________ is likely to be too narrow-minded.

[ ]

A. are well-balanced people with a lot of interests

B. are interested not only in class but also in outside their school work

C. only lives for his work

D. have other interests besides his teaching

Four Simple Keys to Transform Your Life

The Power of Choice.Every one of us makes countless choices every day.Every choice we make has an impact on our lives.Even insignificant choices can affect what we experience and how we feel. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. The more important the decision, the more profound its effect. For instance, how do I act towards that person who treated me badly? Do I generally choose to be passive, or do I actively set clear intentions and create what I want in my life? Every choice we make, however big or small, affects us in some way.

How Do You Make Choices? If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for those around you. This foundation is to choose based on what's best for all.Imagine a world where every parent, spouse(配偶), friend, teacher, businessperson, and politician truly did their best to choose what's best for all involved in every decision they made We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world.

It's the Intention."But how do I know what is really best?" you might ask.The answer is simple. It doesn't matter. What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice. What matters is that whatever decision you make, you are clear in your intention of choosing based on what's best for all.If it later turns out that you made what appears to have been a bad choice, there's no need for guilt.Knowing that you did your best to choose with a sincere desire for what's best for all, your conscience (良心)stays clear and open. This then allows you to more easily learn from your mistakes, and to live with a clear heart and mind.

What's Best for Me, Too! Choosing what's best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for others. An overly exhausted mother can lose her temper easily. Some time off for this mother might seem selfish, yet in the long run, it can help her to be a better mother to her children. So as we move through each day of our lives, let us remember to include ourselves as we do our best to choose what's best for all.

(1)

Which of the following is FALSE?

[ ]

A.

We make choices every day.

B.

Every choice, however big or small, has an influence on us.

C.

Whenever hunger strikes, we will reach for a junk snack.

D.

Even small choices affect how we feel.

(2)

How should we make choices?

[ ]

A.

To be interested in a richer, fuller life.

B.

To make life better for ourselves.

C.

To choose based on what's best for all.

D.

To imagine a world where everyone did their best.

(3)

Why does the author say, "What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice."?

[ ]

A.

Because the choice you make is not important.

B.

Because you may have made a bad choice.

C.

Because there is no need for guilt.

D.

Because this allows you to stay clear and improve.

(4)

How to choose what is best for us?

[ ]

A.

We need to put away some time for ourselves.

B.

We need to devote all our life to others.

C.

We need to sacrifice ourselves for others.

D.

We need to be selfless every minute.
