When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.

Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.

The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.

The main benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says. "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."

1. The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements except that

__________.

A.they must reach the age of 60

B.they should be easy to make friends with

C.they must swim outdoors at least 8 times in the four cold months

D.they must agree to swim outdoors from November through February

2. Doctors __________.

A.encourage people to take part in cold-water swimming actively

B.point out the possible danger of blood illness during cold-water swimming

C.believe swimming is helpful both in winter and in summer

D.have different ideas about the medical effects of cold-water swimming

3.According to the passage, some doctors believe it is true that __________.

A.you are healthy if cold-water swimming turns your skin color blue

B.cold-water swimming causes more heart attacks in summer than in winter

C.cold-water swimming can make the body temperature dangerously high

D.Polar Bears are bears swimming in freezing water

4.The Polar Bears like to swim all the year round, for __________.

A.they can remain young

B.it is an easy way to keep the body warm in winter

Make Up Your Mind to Succeed

Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failureThe generation (age) born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores (marks) and performance (show) were played down because “everyone's winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive than ever beforeAs a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”

Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 yearsHer research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to itHere's how they work:

A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic – you're a born artist, point guard, or numbers personThe fixed mind-set believes it's sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shameWhen things get difficult, it's quick to blame (liability), lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.

On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possibleBecause the ego (自尊) isn't on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shameWhen faced with a difficulty, it's quick to rethink, change and try againIn fact, it enjoys this experience.

We are all born with growth mind-sets(Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praiseDweck's book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depthBut she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.

1.What does the author think about the present generation?

AThey don't do well at school.

BThey are often misunderstood.

CThey are eager to win in sports

DThey are given too much praise.

2.A fixed mind-set person is probably one who ___ .

Adoesn't want to work hard

Bcares a lot about personal safety

Ccannot share his ideas with others

Dcan succeed with the help of teachers

3.What does the growth mind-set believe?

AAdmitting failure is shameful.

BTalent comes with one's birth.

C. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.

DScores should be highly valued.??

If you've been joining in chat room conversations, or trading e-mail with Web pals, you have become one of the millions who write in a peculiarly short form of English.?

And you've got a sense of humor about short forms like SOHF(=sense of humor failure) to describe Internet newcomers who don't understand you.

Across the globe, every night teenagers and their elders are “talking” online—many of them are talking at the same time.?

It's fast: try talking to six people at once. It's brief: three or four words per exchange. It takes wit, concentration, and quick fingers.?

And it requires tremendous linguistic economy. There's neither time nor space for explanations. Why consume precious key-strokes telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB(=be right back) will do? Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI(=pardon me for jumping in).  Interested in whom you're talking to? Type A/S/L, the nearly universal request to know your pal's age, sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a response from your pal.?

If something makes you laugh, say you're OTF(=on the floor),or LOL(=laughing out loud),or combine the two into ROTFL(=rolling on the floor laughing).?

And when it's time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG(=got to go) or TTYL(talk to you later).?

People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing emotion, as it takes more time to hold down the “shift” key and capitals. Punctuation is going, too.?

In order to talk to several people at the same time on the Internet_______.

A. you have to speak fast and fluently?

B. you have to express your ideas in a brief way?

C. you should speak with wit and humor ?

D. one should pay much attention to the accuracy of the words?

If you get 17/F/NY as an answer to your A/S/L, it means_______.?

A. the person on the other end is 17 from New York and he is fine?

B. you are talking to a girl who is 17 and lives in New York?

C. you are talking to 17 girls who are from New York?

D. the person who are talking to you is a 1.7-foot tall New York girl?

To save time on the Internet_______.?

A. some people leave their letters in the dustbin?

B. some people never use “shift” in their writing?

C. many people leave the capital and punctuation?

D. people seldom use capital letters or punctuation
