Not being able to fall asleep or stay asleep is not a disorder in itself but a sign of some other problems, often a physical one.
If you have trouble sleeping, the American Sleep Disorders Association suggests that, for a week or two, you put down the time you go to bed, get up, exercise, and drink coffee, tea or wine. The purpose is to find the habits that may affect your sleep.
Then:
Don’t drink coffee in the six hours before going to bed.
Stop smoking and drinking at bedtime.
Don’t sleep during the day.
Go to bed at the same time every night. Set your alarm clock for the same time every morning and get up at that time, whether or not you sleep well.
Use the bedroom only for sleep. Read, watch TV, eat and talk elsewhere.
Take sleeping pills according to your doctor’s directions and don’t take them for longer than three weeks at a time.
If you haven’t fallen asleep within 15 minutes of going to bed, don’t turn over worrying about it. Get up and read or watch TV until you are sleepy, then return to bed.
If you continue to have trouble sleeping, ask your doctor for help or go to a sleep-disorders center.

查看习题详情和答案>>“Linda, if beating yourself up were an Olympic sport, you’d win a gold medal!”
Annabel, my close friend, stunned(使…震惊)me with that frank observation after I told her how I had mishandled a situation with a student in a third-grade class where I was substituting(代替). “I should never have let him go to the boy’s room without a pass! It was my fault he got into trouble with the hall monitor! I’m so stupid!”
My friend burst out laughing, and then made her “Olympic” comment. After a brief period of reflection I had to admit that she was right. I did put myself down an awful lot. Why, just during the previous day I had called myself “a slob” for having some papers spread out on my desk, “ugly” when I left the house without makeup and “an idiot” when I left the house for an emergency substitute job without my emergency lesson plan.
In a more reflective tone, Annabel said, “I once took a workshop at church where the woman in charge had us list all the mean things we say about ourselves.”
“How many did you have on your list?” I asked.
“Fifteen,” she confessed. “But then the teacher said, ‘Now turn to the person next to you and say all the items on your list as if you were speaking to that person!’ ”
My jaw dropped,“What did you do?”
“Nothing. Nobody did. We all just sat there, until I said, ‘I could never say these things to anyone else!’ ”
“And our teacher replied, ‘Well, if you can’t say them to anyone else, then don’t ever say them to yourself!’ ”
My friend had a point. I would never insult a child of God---and I’m God’s child, too!
God, today let me be as kind to myself as I would be to another of Your children.

Keeping a Diary in English
Our teacher asks us to keep a diary in English. I 36 doing so because I think keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to 37 our English writing ability.
Compared with 38 forms of writing, it is shorter and 39 less time. It can help us to 40 the habit of thinking in English. 41 we persist in(坚持) this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, 42 can use the important phrases and sentences we’ve 43 in or out of English classes to describe our 44 , and this way we can master and use freely 45 we’ve learned, which will do good 46 us in English learning. But 47 we certainly run up against many difficulties. In the first place, it often happens that we have 48 finding proper words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there 49 many idiomatic (惯用的) ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard 50 us to put them into English properly.
As far as I am concerned, my suggestion is that we 51 always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever 52 beats(难倒) us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then look it up in our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for 53 , if necessary.
In short, I believe that it is of 54 use to keep a diary in English for the development of our 55 skills.

| People in communities have slowly been pushed apart through the years, mostly because people simply aren't taking the time to say a simple "hello." After considering this phenomenon, I decided I was going to 1 the way I was doing things. My 2 came one morning when I was in the community library. I passed by a girl who 3 her books out of her locker. Thinking like most that someone else would help her pick them up, I continued my way. However, when I had to 4 because I stupidly forgot my book, I noticed she had just finished packing them up by herself. No one had stopped to 5 her. "OK," I thought to myself, "this is where I should have changed." My best opportunity came a few days later when I saw a man 6 by himself waiting for the library to open, so I sat down next to him and began a 7 . It was difficult to get started, and even when I had to say goodbye, almost every 8 from my new friend had a tone (语气) of doubt in it. And who could blame him? People aren't used to making an 9 chat with a stranger. But a change, no matter how 10 it is needed, doesn't just happen. It takes people like us to make it possible. I 11 you to take a small step out of your comfort zone and try to make someone's day a little brighter. Together, we can really make society come 12 as a whole. | ||||
