阅读下面短文, 掌握其大意, 然后从1-20各题所给的四个选项中, 选出一 个最佳答案。

Some people think they have an answer to the problems of automobile (汽车) crowding and pollution in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or "bike."

In 1 cities, hundreds of people 2 bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have 3 formed a group called "Bike for a Better City". They claim (声称) that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be 4 automobiles in the downtown section (闹市区) of the city and therefore 5 dirty air from car engines.

For several years this 6 has been trying to get the city government 7 bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to 8 special lanes (车道) — for bicycles only — on some of the main streets, because 9 bicycle riders must use the same lanes 10 cars, there may be accidents. "Bike for a Better City" feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.

But no bicycle lanes have been painted 11. Not everyone thinks they are a good idea. Taxi drivers don't like the idea — they say 12 will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea — they say that 13 there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.

The city government has not yet 14 what to do. It 15 to keep everyone happy. 16 weekends, Central Park — the largest open 17 in New York — is closed to cars, and the roads may be 18 by bicycles only. But "Bike for a Better City" says that this is not 19 and keep fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. 20 that happens, the safest place to bicycle may be in the park.

Sports Double-acts

They are a phenomenal double act:the brothers Michael and Ralf Schumacher have been among the world’s top Formula 1 drivers for years.Up to now, their roles have been clearly defined:the top place on the winners’ rostrum(领奖台)seemed to be reserved(保留)for the older brother.

It’s a problem always being“little Ralf”-even though you have been the bigger one physically for a long time.Always having to drive along behind his successful big brother Michael must be tiring and frustrating(使人沮丧的)-particularly given the overwhelming nature of the control established by Michael Schumacher over recent years.

It all began with his first Formula 1 race in Belgium in 1991.Since then, Schumi I has been building a record of success that cannot be overreached. His superiority over his fellow competitors was almost shocking.Michael is the “super-super-superstar”of Formula 1.

Although the power relations in the Schumacher household seem to have been settled till now-Michael wins, Ralf races after him-it looks as if the trend is starting to move slowly but clearly in a new direction. The struggle is open for the first time.In the current season, Ralf is indeed at last driving a car that meets the technical requirements and has the class to win the World Championship.

At the beginning of August, the brothers, who are now resident in other European countries(to save on their tax bills), will be competing against each other again for the German Grand Prix. The tension is rising, but at the same time it is reassuring to know that whether Michael’s Ferrari or Ralf’s BMW eventually takes the lead: they will be keeping it in the family.

If you intend using humor in your talk to make people smile, you must know how to identify shared experiences and problems. Your humor must be relevant to the audience and should help to show them that you are one of them or that you understand their situation and are in sympathy with their point of view. Depending on whom you are addressing, the problems will be different.

If you are talking to a group of managers, you may refer to the disorganized methods of their secretaries; alternatively if you are addressing secretaries, you may want to comment on their disorganized bosses.

Here is an example, which I heard at a nurses' convention, of a story which works well because the audience all shared the same view of doctors. A man arrives in heaven and is being shown around by St. Peter. He sees wonderful accommodations, beautiful gardens, sunny weather, and so on. Everyone is very peaceful, polite and friendly until, waiting in a line for lunch, the new arrival is suddenly pushed aside by a man in a white coat, who rushes to the head of the line, grabs his food and stomps over to a table by himself. "Who is that?" the new arrival asked St. Peter. "Oh, that's God." came the reply, "but sometimes he thinks he's a doctor."

If you are part of the group which you are addressing, you will be in a position to know the experiences and problems which are common to all of you and it'll be appropriate for you to make a passing remark about the inedible canteen food or the chairman's notorious bad taste in ties. With other audiences you mustn't attempt to cut in with humor as they will resent an outsider making disparaging remarks about their canteen or their chairman. You will be on safer ground if you stick to scapegoats like the Post Office or the telephone system.

If you feel awkward being humorous, you must practice so that it becomes more natural. Include a few casual and apparently off-the-cuff(即兴的)remarks which you can deliver in a relaxed and unforced manner. Often it's the delivery which causes the audience to smile, so speak slowly and remember that a raised eyebrow or an unbelieving look may help to show that you are making a light-hearted remark.

Look for the humor. It often comes from the unexpected. A twist on a familiar quote "If at first you don't succeed, give up" or a play on words or on a situation. Search for exaggeration and understatements. Look at your talk and pick out a few words or sentences which you can turn about and inject with humor.

1.To make your humor work, you should ________.

A.take advantage of different kinds of audience

B.make fun of the disorganized people.

C.address different problems to different people.

D.show sympathy for your listeners.

2. The joke about doctors implies that, in the eyes of nurses, they are ________.

A.impolite to new arrivals.

B.very conscious of their godlike role.

C.entitled to some privileges.

D.very busy even during lunch hours.

3. It can be inferred from the text that public services ________.

A.have benefited many people.

B.are the focus of public attention.

C.are an inappropriate subject for humor.

D.have often been the laughing stock.

4.To achieve the desired result, humorous stories should be delivered ________.

A.in well-worded language.

B.as awkwardly as possible.

C.in exaggerated statement.

D.as casually as possible.

5. The best title for the text may be ________.

A.Use Humor Effectively.

B.Various Kinds of Humor.

C.Add Humor to Speech.

D.Different Humor Strategies.
