The only highway to go to work that I had to drive on was closed down due to an accident on the bridge.A truck had hit the bridge and made it 1 for any traffic to go over it.So in order to get to 2 I had to go a number of miles out of my way.

Not being that 3 with this road and not knowing 4 all the pot holes in the road were, I topped a hill and right in my path was a big pot hole.I felt and heard the familiar sound of a flat tire.I 5 as far to the right as possible and stopped.I tried several times to change the tire, but 6

There I sat out in the countryside and no way to 7 with anybody.Just then, I looked in my rear(后面的) view mirror and a 8 was pulling out of a pasture(牧场) behind me.I was happy but 9 at the same time.

I was struggling to get the 10 out when this man in the pickup pulled in behind me.He got out to introduce himself and 11 to help me.When he got the spare out we discovered that it is also 12 .He told me he would take the tire and have it 13 and call my husband.

We got the tire fixed 14 he took me back to my car.My husband had been 15 us anxiously there until we got back. The kind stranger stayed there and helped my husband 16 the tire. After they finished we 17 thanked him and offered to pay him for his 18

I will never forget his words, "Your thanks are 19 enough pay and I just hope if this ever happens to my wife or daughter someone will be so 20 as to help them."

COPENHAGEN-The world is gathered in Copenhagen for the U.N.climate summit, but Denmark's bicycle-friendly capital has also given its name to a movement of cities trying to find a kinder way to commute.

Nearly 40 percent of Copenhagen's population cycle to work or school on ubiquitous(无处不在的)paved cycle paths. Many residents take to their bikes year-round, braving rain and snow through the winter in a city where the bicycles outnumber the people.

Amsterdam and Beijing too are known for their bicycles, but the Danish capital is where urban planners from around the world have been looking for ways to get their people out of cars and up onto bikes, an effort known as Copenhagenisation.

Klaus Bondam, Copenhagen's technical and environmental chief, calls himself a“mega cyclist”and says the bike's popularity stems partly from high taxes on cars which meant working-class Danes could not afford to drive in the 1930s and ‘40s.“Today you'll meet everybody on the bicycle lanes-women and men, rich and poor, old and young,”Bondam said.

The local government has during the last three years invested more than 250 million crowns($49.42 million)in bicycle lanes and to make the traffic safer for bicyclists.Today around a third of the population drive cars to work or study, another third take public transport, while 37 percent cycle-a figure the city aims to boost to 50 percent by 2015.

There are many benefits when citizens choose bicycles over cars:pollution and noise decline, public health improves, and more people on bikes or walking creates a sense of safety in the city.Fewer parked cars leaves more space for playgrounds, parks, shopping areas and other useful public places.

阅读理解,阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting.A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings.Unfortunately, modern drivers can't even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship.Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

(1)

The passage mainly talks about ________.

[ ]

A.

traffic jams

B.

road politeness

C.

good manners

modern drivers

(2)

Troubles on the road are often caused by ________.

[ ]

A.

the behavior of the drivers

B.

traffic jams

C.

great speed

D.

terrible road conditions

(3)

According to the writer, a good driver should ________.

[ ]

A.

be able to recognize politeness when he sees it

B.

beat back when forced to face rude driving

C.

encourage old ladies to cross the roads whenever they want to

D.

join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel

(4)

The following statements are right EXCEPT that ________.

[ ]

A.

some modern drivers are not good at driving

B.

road politeness is good sense as well as good manners

C.

a friendly driver should nod or wave thanks in answer to an act of politeness

D.

it is also right to have a tiger in the driver's seat

(5)

[ ]

A.

master roadmanship

B.

recognize politeness when they see it

C.

give a friendly nod in answer to an act of politeness

D.

The air bag is a piece of safety equipment in cars. It was first designed by John W. Hetrick in 1952. Like many inventions, he came up with the idea as a result of an event that had occurred in his life. He says:
“In the spring of 1952, my wife, my seven-year-old daughter, Joan, and I were out for a Sunday drive in our 1948 Chrysler Windsor. About three miles outside Newport we were watching for deer jumping across the road. Suddenly, there was a large rock in our path. I hit the brakes and we went into a ditch(壕沟).
“As I applied the brakes, both my wife and I threw our hands up to keep our daughter from hitting the car. There was soft mud in the ditch, so the car wasn’t damaged, and no one was hurt.”
“During the ride home I couldn’t stop thinking about the accident. I asked myself,‘Why couldn’t some object come out to stop you from striking the inside of the car?’As soon as I got home that night I drew some sketches(草图). Each evening for the following two weeks, I’d add or reduce something from the sketches.”
Hetrick applied an event he had observed while in the Navy to the design of the air bag. He was repairing a torpedo(鱼雷) which had a cloth covering. When the compressed(压缩的) air that was in the torpedo was let out, the covering was suddenly filled with air and was shot to the ceiling.
With this knowledge, he developed his design until he was able to obtain a patent on the invention on August 5, 1952. The idea was similar to the air bag designs of today. Compressed air is stored in a container and when a traffic accident occurs and the car slows down at a rapid enough rate, the air will be released into the air bag. The idea was ingenious, but Hetrick’s air bag never would have functioned properly. It was really a breakthrough, but it would require years and years of designing and testing by some top car designers before it could be used.
