摘要:E Nuclear power’s danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be described in one word, radiation. Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human sense. It can’t be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect tem, sense them, without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things. At very high levels, radiation can like an animal or human being at once by killing masses of cells in important organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed at once. Your body will replace the deal cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reported themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in an unusual way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years. This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the knowledge of the person at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated and feel fine, then die of cancer five , ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or easy to get serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents. Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth. 72. According to the passage, the danger of nuclear power lies in A. nuclear mystery B. radiation detection C. radiation level D. nuclear radiation 73. Radiation can lead to serious result even at the lowest level . A. when it kills few cells. B. if it damages few cells C. though the damaged cells can repair themselves D. unless the damaged cells can reproduce themselves 74. Radiation can hurt us in the way that it can . A. kill large numbers of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately B. damage cells which may grow into cancer years later C. affect the healthy growth of our younger generation D. lead to all of the above result 75. Which of the following can be best inferred from the passage? A. The importance of protection from radiation cannot be over-emphasized. B. The mystery about radiation remains unsolved. C. Cancer is mainly caused by radiation. D. Radiation can hurt those who do not know about its danger. 高考模拟考试 英 语 第二卷

German born theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein became a citizen of Switzerland in 1901, the year he began a temporary position 1 a mathematics teacher at the Technical High School in Winterthur. The 2 year he was hired as a technical expert at the patent office in Berne, a position he 3 until 1909.Einstein completed his doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1905.

Working in his spare time Einstein 4 three remarkable papers in the year 1905.Each was revolutionary. The first paper on the quantum nature of light(photoelectric effect)led to a Nobel prize sixteen years later. His second paper 5 special relativity made Einstein a household name throughout the world. His third paper provided an explanation for 6 had been known as Brownian motion, the random and hitherto unexplained rapid movements of very small particles suspended in fluids or in air.Einstein’s explanation provided convincing evidence 7 the physical existence of atom-sized molecules.

After 1905 Einstein 8 important contributions to quantum theory and sought to extend the special theory of relativity 9 non-inertial(i.e.accelerating)reference frames. In 1907 Einstein articulated the principle of equivalence. This idea holds that gravitational acceleration is indistinguishable from acceleration 10 by mechanical forces.

In 1909 Einstein became professor of physics at the University of Zurich. He was 11 a full professor 12 the Karl-Ferdinand University in Prague in 1911.About 1912, Einstein began a new period of his gravitational research by 13 his work in terms of the tensor calculus of Tullio Levi-Civita and Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro.Einstein 14 his new work the general theory of relativity.

Einstein received 15 Nobel Prize in 1921 for his 1905 work on the photoelectric effect.A visit 16 the United States in 1932 was followed by the 17 of a post at Princeton which he assumed in December 1932.The following month the Nazis 18 into power in Germany and Einstein was never to return there. At Princeton his work attempted to unify the laws of physics. One week before his death Einstein signed his 19 letter, a letter to Bertrand Russell in which he agreed that his name should go on a manifesto urging all nations to 20 nuclear weapons.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。

A. Goods for auction (拍卖) sales

  B. Definition of bidding

  C. Way to sell more goods by auction

  D. Auction sales in history

  E. Brief introduction to auctions

  F. Making a larger profit as an auctioneer

1.______

Auctions are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer. He asks the crowd assembled in the auction-room to make offers, or “bids”, for the various items on sale. He encourages buyers to bid higher figures, and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer of the goods. This is called “knocking down” the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer strikes a small hammer on a table at which he stands.

2. ______

The ancient Roman probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin auction, meaning “increasing”. The Romans usually sold in this way the goods taken in war. In England in the eighteenth centuries, goods were often sold “by the candle”: a short candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it stayed alight.

3. ______

Practically all goods whose qualities vary are sold by auction. Among these are coffee, skins, wool, tea, furs, silk and wines. Auction sales are also usual for land and property, furniture, pictures, rare books, old china and similar works of art.

4. ______

An auction is usually advertised beforehand with full particulars of the articles to be sold and where and when they can be viewed by potential buyers. If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed, and each group of goods to be sold together, called a “lot”, is usually given a number. The auctioneer need not begin with Lot 1 and continue in the order of numbers: he may wait until he notices the fact that certain buyers are in the room and then produce the lots they are likely to be interested in.

5. ______

The auctioneer’s services are paid for in the form of a percentage of the price the goods are sold for. The auctioneer therefore has a direct interest in pushing up the bidding as high as possible. He will not waste time by starting the bidding too low. He will also play on the opponents among his buyers and succeed in getting a high price by encouraging two business competitors to bid against each other.

Surtsey was born in 1963.Scientists saw the birth of this island. It began at 7.30 a.m. on 14th November. A fishing boat was near Iceland. The boat moved under the captain's(船长)feet. He noticed a strange smell. He saw some black smoke. A volcano(火山)was breaking out. Red-hot rocks, fire and smoke were rushing up from the bottom(底部)of the sea. The island grew quickly. It was 10 meters high the next day and 60 meters high on 18th November.

Scientists flew there to watch. It was exciting. Smoke and fire were still rushing up. Pieces of red-hot rock were flying into the air and falling into the sea. The sea was boiling and there was a strange light in the sky. Surtsey grew and grew. Then it stopped in June 1967.It was 175 meters high and 2 kilometers long. And life was already coming to Surtsey. Plants grew. Birds came. Some scientists built a house. They want to learn about this young island. A new island is like a new world.

As a result of pollution , Lake Erie , on the borders of the USA and Canada, is now without any living things.
Pollution in water is not simply a matter of “poisons” killing large numbers of fish overnight. Very often the effects of pollution are not noticed for many months or years because the first organism(生物体 ) to be affected are either plants or plankton. But these organisms are the food of fish and birds and other creatures. When this food disappears, the fish and birds die too. In this way a whole food chain can be wiped out, and it is not until dead fish and water birds are seen at the river’s edge or on the sea shore that people realize what is happening.
Where do the substances which pollute the water come form? There are two main sources sewage (污水) and industrial waste. As more detergent (洗涤剂 ) is used in the home, so more of it is finally put into our rivers. lakes and seas. Detergents harm water birds dissolving the natural substances which keep their feathers waterproof. Sewage itself, if not properly treated, makes the water dirty and prevents all forms of life in rivers and the sea from receiving the oxygen they need. Industrial waste is even more harmful since there are many highly poisonous things in it, such as copper and lead(铅 ).
So , if we want or stop this pollution , the answer is simple: sewage and industrial waste must be made clean before flowing into the water. It may already be too late to save some rivers and lakes, but others can still be saved if the correct action is taken at once.
72. Pollution in water is noticed _____.
A. when the first organisms are affected    B. when a good many fish and birds die
C. when poisonous things are poured into water
D. as soon as the balance of nature is destroyed
73. The living things die because there is no ____ in the lake or river.
A. water          B. fish               C. poison           D. oxygen
74. Which of the following is harmful according to the passage?
A. Organisms                             B. Plants and plankton in the water
C. Waste water from cleaning   D. Industrial waste made clear before flowing into the water
75.The way to stop water pollution is _______.
A. realize the serious situation clearly
B. put oxygen into the river
C. make the waste material harmless before flowing into the water
D. make special room in the sea for our rubbish

About ten years ago, a young and very successful businessman named Josh was traveling down a Chicago neighborhood street. He was going a bit too fast in his shiny, black, 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE, which was only two months old.
He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and-WHUMP!-it hit the Jag’s shiny black side door! SCREECH…!!!! Immediately Josh stopped the car, jumped out, seized the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid, “What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?!” Building up a head of steam, he went on. “That’s my new Jag, that brick you threw is going to cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it?”
“Please, mister, please… I’m sorry! I didn’t know what else to do!” begged the youngster. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop!” tears were streaming down the boy’s face as he pointed around the parked car. “It’s my brother, mister,” he said. “He rolled of the curb(路沿) and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.” Sobbing, the boy asked the businessman, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He’s hurt and he’s too heavy for me.”
Moved beyond words, the young businessman tried hard to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. Straining, he lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapers and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be OK. He then watched the younger brother push him down the sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long walk back to the black, shining 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE-a long and slow walk. Josh never did fix the side door of his Jaguar. He kept the dent(凹痕) to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at him to get his attention. Feel for the bricks of life coming at you.
