TWENTY-FIVE years ago director Stephen Spielberg captured the hearts of Western audiences with his family classic.E.T.Now his Hong Kong director Stephen Chow is trying to do the same trick in China.
Chow's latest movie CJ7(《长江七号》),in cinemas now,is a heart-warming story about a poor migrant worker(外来务工者) and his son. When a strange alien enters their lives, father and son learn a lesson about the value of family.Chow hopes his movie will help to make family films more popular in China.
Family films have been the main part of the Hollywood market for the last 40 years. They have given audiences movies like E.T., Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. However, there are few of these movies in China, where expensive history films are more popular.
A family film is not simply a children's movie. It is a film that is not only suitable for children, but appeals to the whole family.
According to Raymound Zhou,a famous film critic, these films are rare in China because“very few families go to the cinema together”.Because of this, there is little demand for movies that appeal to the whole family.
However, in the West,it is common for the family to sit down and watch a movie together.Tim Bridges, from London, says:“I love it at Christmas when I sit down and watch a movie with my family.”
All family films contain similar messages about being honest、remaining positive and learning there is more to life than money.According to the American movie reviewer,Dave Johnson, this is because “When parents watch a movie, they want their children to be learning good values”.
Just like when the alien in Spielberg's E.T.phones home to make contact with his family, Chow will hope Chinese audiences are tuned in and ready to receive his family movie message.

Many
people have been talking about the way in which the world will come to an end
in 2012. Everybody wants to find out if December 21, 2012 is the last day of
the earth. The rumor has already been spreading for a very long time. The Mayan’s prediction can account for the rumor. According to the rumor,
the earth will experience dramatic changes in 2012 and the changes will be
disastrous to all of the living creatures on earth. It is widely assumed that a
Planet X will return to orbit the solar system. The return of Planet X will
have a destructive effect on the solar system as well as on some planets
including the Neptune, the Jupiter and the earth. Planet X will cross into their
orbits. There’s a possibility that Jupiter will
change into a little sun at this time, so folks will be well placed to see two
suns in the sky in 2012.
The solar flares (耀斑) that occur in a 11-year cycle will reach their highest point in 2012. The powerful solar flares will affect the magnetic field of the earth and cause disasters. On December 21, 2012, the sun and the earth will line up in the same line at the equator(赤道). The winter solstice(冬至) only occurs once every 25,800 years. The events in the universe are signals that the world will come to an end. As a result of the solar flares, lots of disasters will happen that will destroy the face of the whole earth. Scientists are making the guess primarily based on the Mayan Long Count Calendar.
Many films have been made about the end of the world including End Game by Alex Jones and End Clock: Nostradamus 2012. The former provides insights about the way the world will become one state. After the world government is in place, it’s going to be easy to exterminate 80% of the people in the world. The rest will continue to live with assistance from advanced technology.
No one knows whether the world will end on December 21, 2012: There is no clear answer until the day arrives. Just as the Mayans claim, it will not be the time for the world to end. Instead, it will be the dawn of a fresh start.

“Congratulations, Mr. Jones, it’s a girl.”
Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and bring forth a different answer from every man who hears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether they will be good fathers. Although there are some men who like children and may have had considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other couples, pregnancy(怀孕) was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.
Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child, it is obvious that the change from the role of husband to that of father is a difficult task. Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this re-socialization process. Although many good books have been written about American mothers, only recently have some books discussed the role of a father.
It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father’s role, although difficult, is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mother’s role. The mother’s role seems to require a complete transformation of daily routine and adaptation to a new life, on the other hand, the father’s role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we have mentioned the fact that growing numbers of women are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.
1. According to the author, being a father _______.
A. brings a feeling of excitement to some men
B. has a different meaning for those who have daughters
C. makes some men feel proud and others uneasy
D. means nothing but more responsibilities.
2. It is stated in the passage that ________.
A. some parents are not prepared to have a child
B. young couples do not like children at all
C. working couples do not have much time to take care of their children
D. many parents look forward to having a boy as their first child
3. The transition to the mother’s role requires that the wife _______.
A. changes her life style in a quite different way
B. makes a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situation
C. stays at home to take care of the baby
D. helps her husband in his re-socialization process
4. Some writers argue that with respect to the change of roles, fathers, compared with mothers, _______.
A. have to do more in the household
B. have to make more difficult adaptations
C. have an easier job to do
D. can usually do a better job
查看习题详情和答案>>Everyone gathered around and Paddy read out loud, slowly, his tone growing sadder and sadder. The little headline said: BOXER RECEIVES LIFF SENTENCE.
Frank Cleary, aged 26, professional boxer, was today found guilty of the murder of Albert Gumming, aged 32, laborer, last July. The jury (陪审团) reached its decision after only ten minutes, recommending the most severe punishment to the court. It was, said the Judge, a simple case.Cumming and Cleary had quarreled violently at the Harbour Hotel on July 23rd and police saw Cleary kicking at the head of the unconscious Gumming. When arrested, Cleary was drunk but clear-thinking.
Cleary was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour.Asked if he had anything to say, Cleary answered, "Just don't tell my mother."
" It happened over three years ago," Paddy said helplessly. No one answered him or moved, for no one knew what to do."Just don't tell my mother," said Fee numbly (麻木地)."And no one did! Oh,God' My poor, poor Frank!"
Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said."Fee, pack your things. We'll go to see him."
She half-rose before sinking back.her eyes in her small white face stared as if dead."I can't go," she said without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there."It would kill him to see me.I know him so well—his pride, his ambition.Let him bear the shame alone, it's what he wants. We've got to help him keep his secret. What good will it do him to see us?"
Paddy was still weeping, not for Frank, but for the life which had gone from Fee's face, for the dying in her eyes.Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune, always stood between Fee and himself. He was the cause of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children.Every time it looked as if there might be happiness for Fee, Frank look it away. But Paddy's love for her was as deep and impossible to wipe out as hers was for Frank.
So he said, "Well, Fee, we won't go.But we must make sure he is taken care of.How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?"
There was no excitement in the eyes, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks." Yes, Paddy, do that.Only make sure he knows not to tell Frank we found out.Perhaps it would ease Frank to think for certain that we don't know."
