It was not the first time for Shi Benliang, a senior physics major at Peking University, to feed cats. But the 22-year-old felt sad when he saw the scars and wounds on the bodies of the little creatures.
“I can imagine how they have suffered from being abandoned. They lead a harsh life wandering around,” said the student..Shi is one of a dozen students at the university volunteering to feed the stray cats during the winter break.
Recruited by the Stray Cat Rescue Association at the university through a Bulletin Board System (BBS), he took turns with other students to care for the homeless animals. It is estimated that there are more than 100 stray cats on the campus of Peking University.
Jin Jing, 18, an economics freshman at the university, cared for the cats for two days. “At around 5 pm I cycled to the 22 feeding sites on campus marked on a special map,” she said. “At each site I left some cat food and water.”Jin was excited when the animals rushed to her feet. “Some are shy and timid, and others are more outgoing. Each of them has their own name such as ‘Sweet Orange’ or ‘Karl Marx’,” she said. “By feeding them I learned to respect life.”
Liu Chenhao, a senior electronics and computer science major, who is in charge of the association, said that feeding was just one part of their responsibilities.“Our aim is to keep the stray cats in check and maintain harmony between them and the students on campus,” he said.
The organization also takes cats to the animal hospital to be treated for oral and skin disease. Another of its major tasks is to find new homes for the cats by uploading their photos and information online.
“We’re very careful when selecting owners and ask them lots of questions to ensure that they won’t desert their cat under any circumstances, such as when they move house or get married,” Liu said. But he stressed that their acts of kindness shouldn’t encourage anyone to abandon their cat. “A cat’s normal life expectancy is more than 10 years, but a stray one may survive for only two or three.” (365words)

Michael, Rae, Jequita, Alice, Sarah and Phyllis have at least one thing in common: They all love animals so much that they’re driven to volunteer regularly at the Romulus Animal Shelter.
The six Romulus-area residents give as much time as they can to perform various tasks at the shelter, help make life more comfortable for the dogs and cats that stay there and do their best to find permanent homes for the stray(流浪)pets.
The shelter, at 12300 Wayne Road, opened in June 2011and operates on money raised in the community. To date, bingos and other fundraising activities have brought in more than $177.000,according to community leader William Wadsworth, but a tight budget requires the efforts of volunteers to make ends meet.
“Without their help, this building would not be an outstanding place,”Wadsworth said.“Their time and devotion is beyond what I ever expected. And I thank them all.”
The volunteers work at the direction of two animal control officers, Annie Hall and Kim Ratcliff, who spend much of their day patrolling(巡逻)the city and housing stray dogs and cats. The two, both with 32 years of experience, count on the public to be the eyes and cars of the shelter. They are also responsible for addressing complaints and taking care of the shelter.
That’s where the volunteers come in. They take photos of the animals and post them on Facebook and other websites for adoption. They clean cages, play with the animals, feed and bathe the pets and take the dogs for walks. They pick up supplies and even clean the restrooms.
“We couldn’t do it without them,” said Ratcliff. “They come in and go right to work. We depend on them a lot. They help run the place,” added Hall.

return, but she didn't. I got unhappy and didn't run after her.
That afternoon I picked my daughter up from school and I told her that Cady might be missing. "If she
has done something wrong, I will not be paying her fines this time," I said. My daughter asked for the
reason. I insisted that I would not keep a disobedient (不听话的) dog.
I took a glance over my daughter. It seemed that the thought of losing the dog was very painful to her.
I think I have given Cady a good living environment. If she is silly enough to leave all that behind, then
"bye-bye" is my attitude.
In a warm and tender moment that brings tears to my eyes, my daughter said, "Dad, you don't
understand. Cady is not pretty and not even well trained. If she is missing, no one will adopt her. That
means she will die."
Then I remembered that the reason why I kept the stray (流浪的) dog in the first place was that we
could not find a home for her and did not want her to be destroyed. My heart softened.
As we pulled into the driveway, there stood Cady in the backyard with a lovely expression. My
neighbor told me that she was clever enough to find her way back. My daughter jumped with joy.

Ah, the time in life when one has to leave home. No one seems to have as hard a time with it as Pepito. Pepito is a little bird who needs to leave the nest, but the problems is, he’s afraid of heights. This makes flying away a bit of a problem, so like most people (or birds in this case) he avoids it, when he finds himself in a new situation, someone happens to give him some advice. A fox suggests he run to where he’s going (I got nervous when he came across a fox, but fortunately the food chain doesn’t apply here), a frog tells him to hop, a gopher to burrow(地洞). After his various attempts not to fly, he makes it to his brothers’ and sister’s new tree, and realizes that what he’s done is much harder than actually trying to fly. It’s a charming story with a good message―often facing up to our fears is much easier than running from them.
The Stray Dog By Marc Simont, HarperCollins, ISBN 0-06-028933-3, $15.95
As someone who has taken in his share of stray animals, I can totally relate to the family in The Stray Dog. While picnicking one day, they befriend a dog that wanders by. Everyone immediately falls in love, but they leave him behind, figuring he belongs to someone else. But as the week goes by, none of them can get the dog, which they’ve named Willy, off their mind. So naturally the next Saturday they go back to that same place to see if Willy’s still there. They find that not only does he not have an owner, but they’ve arrived just in time to prevent a catastrophe. Kids who love animals will definitely get caught up in the action, and even those who don’t will appreciate the quick thinking children who save the day.

D. Willy is the name of the stray dog that has to wander about.
