    Now environmental protection is more pressing than ever before. As we know, massive destruction（毁灭）of environment has brought about negative effects and even poses a great threat (威胁)to man's existence. Indifference to these problems will mean committing suicide. Therefore, effective measures should be taken and laws passed to conserve（保护） environment. Otherwise, man is certain to suffer from the serious consequences（后果）caused by this lack of care for his living surroundings.

Can you imagine traveling to work in a one-man submarine?

Scientists believe that someday one-man submarines will be as numerous as automobiles today. One says,  “One day soon,  men will walk on the ocean floor as they do on the street. ” Perhaps during your life time,  people will travel,  work and live under the sea.

Ships carrying oil and articles of trade will move beneath the ocean. Passenger ships will be built to travel underwater,  where storms cannot delay them or make people seasick. Special underwater ships will be designed for mining,  fishing,  and exploring unknown areas. For military use,  there may be submarines that can fly and then dive underwater to approach the battle area without being seen.

First, however, the human problems associated with living in the ocean will need to be studied in detail. Many of these problems are the same as the problems of living in outer space: pressure, lack of oxygen, and weightlessness. Already scientists have begun to study these problems.

In 1963 and 1964 scientists and navy divers lived and worked underwater for several days in two projects which were called Sealab Ⅰ and Sealab Ⅱ. The Sealab Ⅱ experiment kept the scientists and divers 215 feet below the surface for thirty days, studying marine biology,  temperature,  pressure,  currents,  and ocean bottom geology.

Many puzzling questions remain unanswered,  however. Man’s warm blood makes it difficult for him to live long in the sea without some kinds of warmth. Can our blood be changed to fit new water surroundings?  What will happen to our muscles if we live in the water very long?  Will they become soft away from our usual land existence?  Will bones become weak and our blood pressure change?  Scientists are searching for answers.

By studying plants and animals deep in the ocean,  scientists may find a cure for some of our most serious human diseases. We may learn to use plants to increase our world food supply. Engineers may learn to use the power of the sea by building huge walls to catch the force of the tides.

Treat with Respect

The speed with which Man is changing the face of Earth has outstripped（超过）all the mighty processes of nature put together. In his haste to supply himself with increasing quantities of Earth’s treasures, he risks destroying one he greatly needs, his natural surroundings. Some countries set aside unspoiled areas of natural beauty. Canada has the largest system of national parks in the world, covering about 13 million hectares, preserving the different landscapes and the plant and animal life.

Other countries are restoring areas which have been reduced to waste land by mining. At Broken Hill in Australia drifting sand from rock crushing turned the area into a desert swept by sand storms. This is now being irrigated, fertilized and planted with grass and trees. In Great Britain quarries and gravel pits(深坑) are being filled in or made into lakes, industrial wasteland is being turned into playing fields and waste tips into sloping green hills.

However Man tries to look after Earth, the fact is that he is using up at a great rate resources, especially fuel resources, which have taken millions of years to accumulate and which he cannot renew. Yet every day the Earth receives a huge supply of energy from the Sun. Man has made several experiments in using solar energy to heat furnaces(熔炉), cookers, and water-distillers. In space technology, e.g. on satellites, solar cells convert(使转变) sunlight into electricity. Houses and offices have been designed which are centrally heated by water or air heated by the sunlight. When Man can trap and store this energy, so that he can use it exactly as he needs it, he will have not only an endless supply, but a clean and safe one.
