A picture, a calendar or even a balloon may be the best way for millions of people living in China’s vast country areas to learn about AIDS, one of the biggest threats to public health in the world today.

China has decided to use user-friendly methods including exhibitions, VCDs and TV programmes to spread knowledge of the disease across the nation to try to keep it in check.

Educating people nationwide about AIDS is the top priority(优先权)to prevent the disease from getting out of hand. The farmers will be given knowledge in the easiest way that they can understand.?

A recent survey from the commission(调查团)of more than 7000 people in China showed that nearly 20 percent of them had never heard of AIDS before.Just over 71 percent said they knew AIDS was highly infectious(传染的), but most of them had no clear idea of how the disease could be spread.Just over 62 percent said they knew they could do things in advance to prevent them catching AIDS but they didn’t know what these measures were.

The month-long survey, carried out last December, talked to people in seven countries and cities across China including both developed coastal areas and the less-developed inland areas. The interviewees ranged from 15 to 49 years old, and country residents(居民)were about 63% of the total surveyed.?

Chinese people, especially those in the country, have very little knowledge about what AIDS is all about, not to mention prevention and treatment.By the end of last year, there were 22 517 known HIV/AIDS cases in China. However, more than 6 000 000 people in China have been infected.

Since 1985, China has discovered 880 patients with AIDS-466 of them have died.Sharing needles, prostitution(卖淫)and contaminated blood transfusions(输血传播)are major ways for HIV to spread.A lack of education has been the biggest difficulty against nationwide efforts to prevent AIDS, especially in the countryside.

This question has puzzled scientists since the SARS virus first appeared and spread around the world: Where did it come from?

Now, the first clue has appeared. Researchers in Hong Kong and Shenzhen have proved the probable culprit (凶犯)— the palm civet, a small cat-like animal that is treated as a tasty dish in some parts of China.

After investigating many civets and other animals, scientists from the University of Hong Kong and Shenzhen Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, made a discovery. Four of the palm civets tested were carrying the coronavirus(冠状病毒)that causes SARS.

The study provides the first suggestion that the SARS virus exists outside humans. However, many important questions remain. The possibility of animal-to-animal transmission(传播)has to be investigated. For example, the presence of the virus could result from eating of an infected animal.

Yuen Kwok-Yung, a microbiologist at the university, said the virus may have jumped into humans as people raised, killed and cooked the wild animals.

The civet is one of the main parts in the usual wildlife dish “dragon-tiger-phoenix soup”, for which wealthy Chinese in Guangdong Province will pay large stums . The soup includes pieces of civet cat and snake.

Hong Kong virologist Malik Peiris, who heads the team that first found the SARS coronavirus, said that if the food was properly cooked, the virus should be killed.

However, he said, it obviously cane from the wild animal, and someone could came into contact with it while the live animal was being handled(买卖).

The findings, announced Friday, caused Chinese officials to ban the sate of the animals to try to stop the spread of the disease and prevent new outbreaks, World Health Organization officials said.

News from the WHO website says that it is too early to know how much wild animals cause the transmission of SARS.

LONDON(Reuters)-Ecotourism(生态旅游)is causing a lot of damage to wildlife and may be endangering the survial(生存)of the very animals people are flocking to see, according to researchers.

Biologists and conservationists(自然环境保护论者)are worried because polar bears, dolphins, penguins and other creatures are getting stressed and losing weight and some are dying.

Evidence(证据)is growing that many animals do not react well to tourists in their backyard.”New Scientist magazine said.

The immediate effects researchers have noticed are changes in behavior, heart rates, or stress hormone levels but they fear it could get much worse and over the long term“could endanger the survival of the very wildlife they want to see”.

Although money produced through ecotourism, which has been growing at about 10~30 percent a year, has major benefits for poor countries and people living in rural areas, the Swiss-based World Conservation Union and some governments fear not all projects are audited(审计)and based on environmentally friendly policies, according to the magazine.

“The transmission(传播)of disease to wildlife, or small changes to wildlife health through disturbance of daily life or increased stress levels, while not obvious to the casual observer, may translate to lower survival and breeding.”said Philip Seddon, of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Scientists have noticed that bottleneck dolphins along the nortbeastem coast of New Zealand become nervously excited when tourist boats arrive, Similar changes in behavior have been observed in polar bears and yellow- eyed penguins in areas visited by ecotourists are producing smaller babies.

Conservationists are now calling for more research into the effect of ecotourism on animals and say the industry must be developed carefully. They also want studies done before new ecotourism projects are started.

“The animal's welfare should be very important because without them there will be no ecotourism.”said Rochelle Constantine of the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

Many animals are dying because of lack of money.

B.

There will be no ecotourism without animals.

C.

Eeotourism could endanger the survival of the wildlife people want to see.

D.

More research should be done on ecotourism.

(2)

We may learn from the text that ________.

[ ]

A.

ecotourism must be developed properly

B.

polar bears are losing weight without enough food

C.

all the poor countries have stopped ecotourism

D.

money produced through ecotourism should be spent on wildlife

(3)

Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?

[ ]

A.

Many animals do not react well in their backyard.

B.

Polar bears in areas visited by ecotourists are producing smaller babies.

C.

Ecotoursim has been growing at about 10 - 30 percent a year.

D.

Studies should be done before new ecotourism projects are started.

(4)

What Rochelle Constantine said in the last paragraph implies that ________.

[ ]

A.

if people want to get high income, they must develop ecotourism

B.

animals have rights to live their own life

C.

animals are people's good friends

Can storms in Africa cause asthma(哮喘)in the Caribbean(加勒比)? Islanders point to the desert insects that land on beaches after a 5,000-kilometer flight across the Atlantic. If they can use winds to get from one continent to another, so can clouds of dust that carry disease.

Scientists think that as Africa becomes drier, dust from expanding deserts is being blown away into Caribbean islands.A study in Barbados shows that asthma has increased 17 times since Africa’s drought(干旱)began in 1973.

Other forms of life are suffering, too.Among them are the Caribbean’s famous coral reefs(珊瑚礁), which began dying in large numbers in the 1900s.Eugene Shinn of the U.S.Geiological Sudrvey(USGS)in Florida went to the virgin Islands to study the reefs. The tests he and his colleagues carried out showed that the coral was dying of disease caused by Africa microbes(微生物)from across the ocean.

William Sprigg of the University of Arizona is studying the problem as part of a major UN project. He says that dust is causing problems in the U.S., too.

“We are just beginning to collect the evidence of airborne(空气传播的)dust influences on human health,” he told The Washington Post
