hours. Because it was the weekend, there was only one car available at the moment-an SUV.
Patricia was an environmentalist. SUVs,which are big cars consuming a lot of gasoline, offended
her greatly.
But she needed something to get to Baker,a town that was 100 miles from the small airport.
So she went, RentMe instead. "I need a car for 48 hours," she said," and I don't want an SUV.
I want something cheap. "They told her they had just the vehicle for her,a 1998Toyota. Thirty
dollars a day, including insurance and other incidental fees. All she had to do was to pay forher
own gasoline. Patricia was very pleased. Thirty dollars a day was a good rate even for a weekday.
She signed all the paperwork, and they gave her the keys.
The Toyota was a 4-speed,4-cylinder,2-door beauty, the paint, tires, and the interior were like
the new. It was comfortable, even though the air-conditioner was not the frostiest(结霜的) . She
got in and drove north. It was a two-lane road all the way to Baker, with only one town between
the airport and Baker. That town was Noms,40 miles from Baker.
Patricia didn't make it to Norris. The car refused to run 30 minutes after she had been driving
it. Fortunately, her cell phone was able to connect back to the RentMe desk. "My car stopped
running. and I'm out here in the middle of nowhere in the hot sun! " she said.
"That doesn't make any sense," said the clerk."You did put gas in the car before you left town,
didn't you? "
"No. Of course not ! " yelled Patricia. " Why would Iput gas in the car before I even got out
of town?" "Well, why do you think you got such a good
rate-we save money by having the customer gas up instead of us having to put gas in the car. "
"I was in a hurry,"said Patricia.
"Well, sometimes you pay a price for being in a hurry," said the clerk. " We'II send a man out
with some spare gas for you:if you'd like. ,,"
Of course l'd like , " said Patria.ia. " How long willit be?"
The clerk told her it would be within the hour. He didn't tell her that there would be a $ 50
service charge for delivering the gas,or that the 3 gallons of fuel would cost her $ 7 a gallon. She
would get that bad news when she retumed the car to the airport.
B. Because she failed to carry enough money with her.
C. Because she was not used to driving suc, h a big car.
D. Because it was not easy to drive since it was so old.

C. $ 131.

I had an interested experience last year. After I had left a small village in the south of French, I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved me. I stopped and he asks me for a lift.. As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him with French and he answered in the same language. Apart from a little words, I don’t know any French at all. None of us spoke during the journey. I had nearly reached to the town, when the young man suddenly said , very slow, “ Do you speak English?” As I soon learned, he was English him!

There are two things I can count on my dad asking every time he calls me: “Is there anything I can do for you?” and “How’s the car?” I guess he asks what he can do for me because his dad (an air force officer) was never really there for him, and he’s determined to provide me with the support he lacked. During my youth he never missed a school play or softball game. In fact, he was so supportive that I sometimes longed for one of those dads who dressed better and cared less. But my dad would forever be the guy wearing shorts with dress shoes and black socks, cheering me on, expecting greatness.
His other standard question—How’s the car? -- used to strike me as a waste of long-distance dollars from a man who once suggested making a list of what you want to talk about before calling someone out of state. What I now realize is that “How’s the car?” is not about the car. It’s a father’s way of asking his adult daughter how she is doing. The advantage is that if there’s something wrong with the car, he knows what to do about it and how much it will cost, whereas if you’re having problems about marriage or doubting a career choice, he might have to act Mom on the line.
At age thirty I finally took the plunge(跳进) into adulthood by renting a car without my dad’s help or advice. I’m sure my dad was hurt rather than proud. Though a daughter’s independence is evidence of a job well done, it still implies the job’s done, and many fathers are unwilling to retire. Even when my dad was overworked, he’d happily jump on a plane if I said I needed help. His frequent question “Is there anything I can do for you?” underlines the fact that he wishes there was still something he could provide. It’s interesting: Even though we’re tied by blood and I love him no matter what, he still seems to need a concrete function -- suggesting stocks, finding the cheapest plane fare -- to feel he has a role in my life.

Children are very, very observant and have excellent memories.
Around Christmas last year, we were heading to Grandma’s house. The drive was an hour long, so we had plenty of time to chat. We were waiting to get onto the freeway when my daughter Hayley noticed a homeless man, no sign in hand. “Mom, is that man homeless?” I told her I believed he was.
We got onto the freeway and drove away. But the chatting had stopped. Hayley was quiet all the way there. We spent a few hours at Grandma’s then packed up to head home. As we drove back, Hayley rustled(沙沙作响地移动) around in her seat, trying to reach something on the floor of the car. I asked her to sit still, worried her seatbelt would slip from the booster seat. She mumbled(咕哝)something and sat back.
“Mom, will the homeless man still be outside tonight?” I told her I was not sure, maybe. It was a freezing night, and I started to think of the man now too, and how cold he must be.
All of a sudden, as we got onto the freeway exit, Haley shrieked (尖叫): “There he is! There he is!” and started rolling down her window. “Mom, I found these gloves and scarf back here. Can I give them to him? Can I?” she asked.
I pulled over to the edge of the road, and beckoned(招手示意) the man to come over. Haley smiled at him and handed him her gift. I looked in the front passenger seat, loaded with leftovers from Grandma’s house, and handed those out to him as well.
The man thanked us, he clutched (抓紧) my hand in his and I could feel the bitter cold of them. We wished him a safe night and continued on our journey to our warm home.
“Haley, that was very sweet of you!” I told her. “Well, they were your gloves and scarf, Mom, but his hands looked colder, and he has to keep looking for his house!”
We had talked about homelessness before , and I could hear myself telling her: “Someone who has lost their home.” She had taken my words literally and thought the man’s home was like a lost puppy.
On the ride home, and as I carried my sleeping angel into the house that night, my heart filled with gratitude.
