The mobile phone has been a part of our lives since the 1980s. It enables us to stay in contact with our family and friends at all times and in most areas. However, because of the quick acceptance and extensive usage of mobiles in our lives, we have missed out on an important step, namely, the appropriate (恰当的)use.

Do not use your phone while you are driving ! You could concentrate on your conversation and forget to look where you are going, or you could take your eyes off the road to look at the phone’s display or to press in a number. Either way, you could cause a terrible accident.

There is no more icy glare than that of a theatre goer who has paid a lot of money to see a show and hears your phone playing a tone. It goes without saying that you will be seen as a socially unacceptable person in this situation.
In hospitals
This is probably the most important place to make sure your phone is switched off. Your phone can disturb life-saving electronic equipment in hospitals, so it is necessary that your phone is switched off before you enter.
On planes
Your phone might disturb navigational equipment and cause a horrible accident so you should switch it off before boarding a plane.

查看习题详情和答案>>We live in a dangerous world. The figures for crime go up year by year. If you were attacked in the street, would you be able to defend yourself? Not very well probably, especially if someone was pointing a gun at you. We all see a lot of violence of films, but recently some programs on television showed how people can defend themselves without guns. For example, in one film a woman was attacked from behind. She threw the man, who was heavier and stronger than she was, over her head. Then she held him tightly on the ground. How? She knew Judo.
Jiu-jitsu, as judo is sometimes called, means "muscle science" in Japanese. The student of judo needs to learn a lot about the body, its bones and muscles. Judo uses a number of "falls", "holds" and "throws". Someone who does not know judo cannot defend himself against them. If you know judo you can defend yourself against a person who is stronger than you. You had better not practice judo on your friends unless they can fall without hurting themselves! Being strong is one thing, but using the body wisely is another. In judo, you use the other person's body to help you. You "throw" him to the ground and "hold" him there, so that he cannot move. Of course, it takes time and practice, but knowing judo is useful. In a violent world you ought to be able to defend yourself

they went to their favorite fast food place. Emily got her food first. When Madison sat down next to her,
Emily couldn't believe her eyes. Madison had two hamburgers, three containers of French fries, an apple
pie, a soda, and a shake on her tray.
"Why do you have so much food?" Emily asked. "I'm so tired of being really skinny (极瘦的)," Madison
said,"so I've decided to eat lots of food and try to gain weight."
Trying to gain weight by stuffing (塞, 填) yourself with extra calories like Madison did is a bad idea. It
can make you sick if you're naturally short or thin- so just listen to your appetite (胃口) and eat only as
much as your body tells you to. Once in a while, a health problem can keep a kid from gaining weight. The
kid usually goes to a specialist who can check things out, or to a registered dietitian (饮食学家) who has
lots of tips on how to eat well. But most of the time, thin kids don't need to see a doctor or go on a special
diet.
Here's another surprise. Kids who are thin need to exercise. A lot of people use exercise to keep their
weight under control or to lose weight. But exercise serves many other purposes, too. Moving around helps
you develop important skills and helps your body get stronger. And unless a kid has gone through puberty
(青春期), weight-lifting won't build bigger muscles. It also could hurt bones, joints, and muscles.
You want to help your body, not hurt it. Treat it right and you'll grow and develop just the way you
should.
B. introduce the topic of gaining weight
C. suggest that Emily and Madison often went to their field trip
D. tell us that Emily and Madison were close friends
B. see a doctor as soon as possible
C. force yourself to eat more every day
D. eat as much as you can to gain weight
B. Madison should have much food because she was thin.
C. Thin people also need to exercise.
D. You must be ill if you are too thin or too short.
B. Emily and Madison - Two Close Friends.
C. The Thinner You Are the Better You Will Be.
D. What Should You Do if You Are Thin?
Jeans are trousers made of a kind of clothe called denim. For many people, blue jeans represent American culture.
The history of blue jeans usually begins with a man named Levi Strauss. Although he did not invent the jeans, he is considered the first person to produce and sell this kind of clothing in large amounts.
Levi Strauss was born in Bavaria, Germany. In 1847, he and his family moved to the US. He opened a store, first in New York, and then in San Francisco, California. Among the products he sold were jeans. These trousers were especially useful for miners in California who needed clothing made of a strong material.
Levi Strauss partnered with a clothing maker named Jacob Davis, who had invented a process for making rivets(铆钉) for jeans. These metal things helped strengthen the blue jean cloth to make the trousers stronger. In 1873, Strauss and Davis received a patent to officially own this invention. They began producing “ copper-riveted waist overalls(工装裤)”. In 1928 the Levi Strauss company used the word “Levi’s” as the trademark for their products.
The 19th-century workers would probably be surprised to know that their trousers would one day become a fashion object. Today, jeans are worn by people of all ages, incomes and lifestyles. Jeans come in many colors other than blue and in many styles and at many prices.
A national museum in Washington, D.C. has one of the oldest known pairs of Levi’s jeans in its collection. Jeans have come to express different ideas about American culture based on the people who wear them. These include the heroes of the Wild West and famous Hollywood actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando in the 1950s. Writer James Sullivan published a book called Jean: A Cultural History of an American Icon. In the book, he says jeans serve as a sign for two American values, creativity and rebellion (叛逆).
