Years ago I had the opportunity to meet a girl who reinforced my understanding of the power of belief. She was   36  the most powerful person I had ever met. I met Chris for the first time while taking the Dale Carnegie   37  in California.

Our class had already been going for quite some time when   38 , supported by metal crutches(拐杖),   39   herself in. Chris had cerebral palsy(大脑性麻痹). She had many   40  in communicating with others. This was not due to   41  of desire, but because most of her twenty-one years of life she had been kept in a room with no more than Elvis records and tapes to   42  her. No one had taken the time to assist her in developing the ability to   43 . It was Bonnie, her current caretaker, who   44  there was much more to Chris than anyone else gave her credit for.

When asked by the instructor what her goal   45  the twelve-week course was, Chris struggled to respond and became frustrated and   46  in the process. For most of her   47 nobody would listen to her. The only way she knew to get someone to   48  was through temper outbursts. With Bonnie as her interpreter, Chris conveyed that her   49  was to be able to stand by herself in front of forty-five people and tell us about herself.

On the twelfth week, Chris stood in front of the room and   50  with us, in her own words, what her life had been like. It was one of the most beautiful and enlightening experiences I had ever   51 . Though as a girl who had in many ways been   52 , she believed that she could __53__ more in her life and she did. And she also had the love and support of forty-five friends, who, just weeks before, had been   54  strangers.

What we all witnessed through Chris’ courage is that life is   55  moment by moment, based on our beliefs, which are relevant to both our personal and professional direction and have the power to make our wildest dreams come true.

LOS ANGELES-British singing sensation Susan Boyle’s first album quickly climbed to No. 1 on U.S. album charts on Wednesday with sales of 701,000 copies, beating new releases by Adam Lambert and Rihanna and becoming the best-selling debut(首次演出) of 2009. Boyle, 48, a frumpy Scottish singer, who became an international YouTube phenomenon after appearing on TV show “Britain’s Got Talent”, also topped the British album charts earlier this week.
Her “I Dreamed a Dream” release through Sony Music Entertainment, marked the best U.S. opening of a female artist's debut album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, Billboard.com said. It was also the fastest selling album in Britain this year and has topped the charts in Australia and Ireland.
Billboard said only one album in SoundScan’s tracking history had seen a bigger opening week than Boyle. U.S. rapper Snoop Dogg’s album “Doggystyle” sold 803,000 copies in its first week in 1993—before traditional album sales began tumbling(falling rapidly) in the face of piracy(盗版) and a shift to digital sales.
Although Boyle finally failed to win “Britain’s Got Talent”, her April trial hearing for the show has been viewed more than 300 million times on the Internet.
In a good week for stars of TV talent shows, “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert’s debut album “For Your Entertainment”, also released through Sony, debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200 with 198,000 copies sold. Lambert’s strong showing followed headline news coverage of his bad televised live performance at the American Music Awards 10 days ago in which he aroused oral sex with a dancer and kissed a male keyboard player.
R&B singer Rihanna’s “Rated R”, her first studio album since being attacked by her then-boyfriend Chris Brown in February, bowed in at No.4 with 181,000 copies—the best sales week in the 21-year-old singer’s career.
Italian singer Andrea Bocelli held onto the No.2 spot for a third week with his “My Christmas” album with 218,000 new copies sold during the week, SoundScan said.
60. According to the passage, what albums were released through Sony Music Entertainment?
A. Doggystyle and I Dreamed a Dream.
B. For Your Entertainment and I Dreamed a Dream.
C. Rated R and Doggystyle.
D. My Christmas and For Your Entertainment.

A. Doggystyle marked the biggest opening week in SoundScan’s tracking history.
B. I Dreamed a Dream was the fastest selling album in English-speaking countries.
C. Upon its release, Boyle’s first album ranked first on album charts on Wednesday.

62. Who may perform crazily and leave audience a bad impression?
A. Susan Boyle.       B. Andrea Bocelli.     C. Rihanna.        D. Adam Lambert.
63. From the passage we can conclude _______.
A. The albums could have sold better if it had not been for piracy and a shift to digital sales

Bungee jumping is an activity about jumping from a tall structure while connected to a large elastic cord(有弹性的绳子). The tall structure is usually a fixed object, such as a building, bridge or crane; but it is also possible to jump from a movable object, such as a hot-air balloon or helicopter, that has the ability to stay over one place on the ground; fixed-wing aircraft are unsuitable because they only stay high when moving quickly forward.

When the person jumps, the cord stretches to absorb (吸收)the energy of the fall, then the jumper flies upwards again as the cord jumps back. The jumper oscillates(摆动)up and down until all the energy is used up.

The word bungee first appeared around 1930 and was the name for a rubber eraser. The first modern bungee jumps were made on 1 April 1979 from the 250-foot Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, by David Kirk, Chris Baker and Alan Weston of the Dangerous Sports Club. The jumpers continued with jumps in the US from the Golden Gate and Royal Gorge bridges, spreading the concept worldwide. By 1982 they were jumping from mobile cranes and hot-air balloons. Later they put on commercial(商业的)shows, which began in 1986.

As with any sport, injuries can still happen, and there have been deaths. A relatively common mistake in the cases that may cause death is to use a cord that is too long. The cord should be fully shorter than the height of the jumping place to allow it room to jumper either starts to slow down or keeps speeding up depending upon the speed of falling.

A.the weight of the jumper

B.the height of the jumping place

C.the length of the cord

D.the speed of the falling

4.The purpose of writing this passage is to__________.

A.teach people how to carry out a bungee jumping

B.remind people of the danger of bungee jumping

C.advise people not to take the risk of bungee jumping

D.introduce some knowledge about bungee jumping
