It is often claimed that nuclear energy is something we cannot do without. We live in a consumer society, where there is a huge demand for commercial products of all kinds. Moreover, an increase in industrial production is considered to be one solution to the problem of mass unemployment. Such an increase needs an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe that nuclear energy is endless and economical. There are a number of other advantages in the use of nuclear energy. Firstly, nuclear power, except for accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run by relatively few technical and managing staff. The nuclear power station represents a large step in our scientific research and, whatever the anti-nuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel.

However, those who disagree with nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct threat not only to the environment but also to the human race. Furthermore, it is doubtful whether finally nuclear power is a cheap source of energy. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America and Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost of uranium (铀) and the cost to ensure its safety could price nuclear power out of the market. In the long run, environmentalists argue, nuclear energy may bring about the destruction of the human race. Thus, if we wish to survive, we cannot afford nuclear energy. Though nuclear energy programmes are expanding, which assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. It is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue.

Having weighed up the arguments on both sides, it seems there are good economic and environmental reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.

64. According to the passage, an increase in industrial production can          .

A. ensure the safety of nuclear power

B. overcome the resource crisis

C. solve the pollution problem

D. offer more working opportunities

65. According to the anti-nuclear group, nuclear energy has the following disadvantages EXCEPT that          .

A. it is a limited source of energy

B. it is harmful to the environment

C. it is a danger to the human race

D. it is an expensive source of energy

66. Some people claim that nuclear energy is necessary because          .

A. it can meet the growing demand of energy in an industrially developing society

B. it represents a big step forward in our scientific development

C. it provides the best solution to mass unemployment

D. it’s easy to run a nuclear power station

There are a number of ways in which mass media make daily life easier for us.

First, they inform and help us keep a watch on our world. They gather and pass on information we would be unlikely or unable to gain on our own.

Second, mass media help us to arrange our time and life. What we talk about and what we think about are greatly influenced by the media. When people get together, they tend to talk about certain happenings on the newspapers or on TV. Because we are provided with differing points of view through different kinds of media every day, we are able to comment on all sides of a certain issue.

Third, mass media help us to connect with various groups in society. Through mass media, we are able to keep in contact with politicians in the world; with famous actors and actresses, and with our beloved singers.

Fourth, the media help to socialize us. We learn about the preferred behavior and values from the people we meet as well as from the media. Through portrayals of people, the media tell us what proper behaviors are. By doing so, they teach us standards of behavior and values, and help us in our daily life.

Fifth, the media are used to persuade people. A good example is advertisements through the media. Newspapers, magazines and TV are filled with all kinds of colorful, persuasive advertisements. Though many advertisements may not say openly that they want you to buy a certain product, they describe their products in such a way that you may want to buy them.

Sixth, the media entertain. All of the media make some effort trying to entertain their audience. For example, even though the newspaper is a main medium of information, it also contains entertainment features. Many newspapers offer their readers at least some of the following: comics, fiction books and puzzle games, televisions and magazines are devoted mainly to entertainment. It is guessed that in the future, the entertainment function of mass media will become even more important than it is now.

As a Fulbright (富布莱特法案基金) scholar at Yale, I wanted very much to get some individual help from
some famous professors, but their office-hours were only once a week and there were always students waiting outside. At first, I was too polite to get their help. Then I realized that Chinese politeness does not work in this
society. I needed to be aggressive (好胜的) to get what I wanted. I also noticed that Chinese students or Asian
students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students.
I was impressed by the role of the professor in the class. The professor didn't act as an authority (权威),
giving final conclusions, but as a researcher looking for answers to questions together with the students. One
linguistic feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal (情态) verbs-far more than
I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said:"this is my personal opinion and it could be wrong.
It would be a good idea if you could read the book I mentioned the other day." Or," You may find the book I
recommended helpful." Or,"You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting." When
making comments in students'performances, the professor usually said:" It might have been much clearer if
you had taken in some of the ideas we discussed earlier this semester."
In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct directions. Therefore students
always expect the professor to give an answer to the question. I still remember how annoyed they were when
foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than
those of American students. Once the Chinese students got the answer, they were sure about it. That is why
they make far more certain statement than American students. That is why Chinese students find it difficult to
use modal verbs because the function of modal verbs is to provide room for negotiation and different ideas.
1. According to the author, American students ______.
A. tend to offend others in class
B. show no respect for their teachers in class
C. are more active than Asian students in class
D. are more polite than Asian students in class
2. The American professors use many modal verbs because they want to______.
A. argue with their students
B. be more sure about their answers
C. express their ideas more clearly
D. develop their students' own way of thinking
3. Which of the following statements best expresses the author's idea?
A. Chinese professors can always give correct answer to the question.
B. American professors are not responsible since they don't give students answers.
C. American education produces aggressive students.
D. Education in China is not helpful in developing students' creativity.
4. Which of the following methods did the author mainly employ in developing the article?
A. Comparison and contrast.
B. Cause and effect.
C. Giving examples.
D. Description.
5. What is the author's attitude towards education in U.S.?
A. Positive
B. Negative (否定的)
C. Neutral (中立的)
D. Unsure
