Material Girl no more?Madonna says writing children’s books is more satisfying than being a movie star.

Her book, The English Roses, went on sale on September 15th, appearing in 100 countries and in 30 languages as the first in her series of tales for children. The pop diva(女歌唱家), whose only book until now was the 1992 photo essay titled“Sex”, said she wrote the books to teach children some of the life lessons she’s learned over the years.

“The most fun that I’ve had of all the things I’ve done successfully has been to write these books.A lot of it has to do with the fact that I’m not doing it to become more famous, and I’m not doing it to become richer.I’m doing it because I want to share something I know with children.”

Hours after its release, the 48 page book was already No.8 on Amazon, com’s sales list. The first print is 1 million copies worldwide, with more than 750,000 in the United States. The English Roses is about a friendship shared by four girls and their mutual(共同的)envy of a beautiful classmate, with illustrations(插图)by fashion artist Jeffrey Fulvimari.

“There is one life-giving force in the world,”Madonna declared.“When we disconnect from this life-giving force, that’s when we bring pain and suffering into our lives. Each of the stories has to do with different ways you disconnect from God.”Madonna also said she was deeply affected by the experience of raising two children, Lourdes, 6, and Rocco, 3.The English Roses is the latest among a growing number of celebrities written children’s books.

The next book in the series,“Mr.Peabody’s Apples,”will be out in November. Each tale is set in a different time and place and has new characters and different illustrators.

One summer my friend and I decided to go to Italy for a
holiday and we decided to travel there without going through a
travel agency.  You know, you would be submerged (淹没) in
crowds of tourists and lose lots of opportunities to get familiar with
the country more closely. We started to think over our trip and
managed to come up with a free tour of Italy.
The trip was not very long but it was still very impressive (印
象深刻的).  We look forward to going there again !  Of course, we
spent lots of time arranging (安排) the trip, but it was well worth
it !  Of course I was afraid that something would go wrong and I was
especially anxious about my visa, but everything went quite
smoothly in the end.
The most difficult part was getting a visa (签证)  without an
invitation.  In the Italian consulate (领事馆) , one must hand in
some official paper proving that one has a hotel booked for oneself
in order to get the visa. Then we had to solve the ticket problem.
Airlines often sell cheap tickets and we bought ours far in
advance. The next step was to book a hotel. We finally booked a
hotel about 30km away from the heart of Rome and it was the
perfect choice for our trip.
Every day we took a train that carried us to the heart of
Rome. Our big house, which was surrounded by the forest, was a
rare place for the fresh air and absolute silence, beautiful views,
hospitable hosts, comfortable living conditions delighting us to no
end. Besides this, we were very lucky that our mistress was a
Russian. She gave us a lot of advice that was of great use. She
told us what transport to choose and where the best places to go.
Don't be afraid to arrange your trip by yourself. It's not
difficult ! The only thing I'll say right now is that we really enjoyed
traveling by ourselves. We walked with a map and a guide-book to
wherever we wanted and we even met some of our fellow
countrymen on the way just two or three times. So, if you're also
planning a "single" trip, don't forget to take a Russian-Italian
phrasebook as people in Italy prefer to speak in their native
tongue.
1. Why does the author want to go to Italy again?
A. He had a great time there.
B. Italy has a lot of attractions.
C. His friend invited him there.
D. He didn't stay in Italy long enough.
2. What does the author think was the hardest in preparing for his Italian trip?
A. Buying cheap airline tickets to Italy before the traveling.
B. Getting a visa without an invitation from the Italian consulate.
C. Booking a comfortable hotel on his own in Rome.
D. Solving the ticket problem far in advance.
3. In the fourth paragraph the author mainly explains ____ .

A. the reason why he chose to live in the center of Rome
B. the reason why the hotel he booked was the right choice
C. what transport they chose to travel in their Italian trip
D. the reason why the mistress gave them some advice

It is a dreadful thing to be poor a fortnight before Christmas, said Clorinda, with the mournful sigh of seventeen years.

Aunt Emmy smiled. Aunt Emmy was sixty, and spent the hours she didnt spend in a bed, on a sofa or in a wheel chair; but Aunt Emmy was never heard to sigh.

“The gifts which money can purchase are not the only ones we can give, said Aunt Emmy gently, nor the best, either.

“Oh, I know it's nicer to give something of your own work,” agreed Clorinda, “but materials for fancy work cost too. That kind of gift is just as much out of the question for me as any other.”

“That was not what I meant,” said Aunt Emmy.

“What did you mean, then?” asked Clorinda, looking puzzled.

Aunt Emmy smiled.

“Suppose you think out my meaning for yourself,” she said. “That would be better than if I explained it. Besides, I don't think I could explain it. Take the beautiful line of a beautiful poem to help you in your thinking out: 'The gift without the giver is bare.

“I'd put it the other way and say, 'The giver without the gift is bare,” said Clorinda. “That is my predicament(窘境)exactly. Well, I hope by next Christmas I'll not be quite bankrupt. I'm going into Mr. Callender's store down at Murraybridge in February. He has offered me the place, you know.”

“Won't your aunt miss you terribly?” said Aunt Emmy gravely. “I think she would rather have your companionship than a part of your salary, Clorinda,” said Aunt Emmy. “But of course you must decide for yourself, dear.”

“Well, I must say bye-bye and run home.” Clorinda lived just across the road from Aunt Emmy in a tiny white house behind some huge willows. But Aunt Mary lived there too--the only relative Clorinda had, for Aunt Emmy wasn't really her aunt at all. Clorinda had always lived with Aunt Mary ever since she could remember.

Clorinda puzzled over Aunt Emmy's meaning for days. Then all at once it came to her. On Christmas Day, Clorinda went over to Aunt Emmy's. Aunt Emmy was lying on the sofa before the fire, and Clorinda sat down beside her.

“I've come to tell you all about it,” she said. “Aunt Emmy, I thought for days over your meaning ... And then one evening it just came to me. At first I didn't think I could give some of them, and then I thought how selfish I was. I would have been willing to pay any amount of money for gifts if I had had it, but I wasn't willing to pay what I had. I got over that, though, Aunt Emmy. Now I'm going to tell you what I did give.”

“First, there was old Aunt Kitty. You know she was my nurse when I was a baby. She is always glad when I go to see her, but I've never gone except when I couldn't help it. She is very deaf, and rather dull and stupid, you know. Well, I gave her a whole day. I took my knitting yesterday, and sat with her the whole time and just talked and talked. She was so pleased and proud; she told me when I came away that she hadn't had such a nice time for years. ”

“Then there was ... Florence. You know, Aunt Emmy, we were always intimate friends until last year. Then Florence once told Rose Watson something I had told her in confidence. I found it out and I was so hurt. I couldn't forgive Florence, and I told her plainly I could never be a real friend to her again. Florence felt badly, because she really did love me, and she asked me to forgive her, but it seemed as if I couldn't. Well, Aunt Emmy, that was my Christmas gift to her ... my forgiveness.”

“I gave Aunt Mary her gift this morning. I told her I wasn't going to Murraybridge, that I just meant to stay home with her. She was so glad--and I'm glad, too, now that I've decided so.”

“Your gifts have been real gifts, Clorinda,” said Aunt Emmy. “Something of you--the best of you--went into each of them.”

“I didn't forget you, Aunt Emmy,” she said, as she unpinned the paper.

There was a rosebush. Aunt Emmy loved flowers. She put her finger under one of the roses and kissed it.

“It's as sweet as yourself, dear child,” she said tenderly. “And it will be a joy to me all through the lonely winter days. You've found out the best meaning of Christmas giving, haven't you, dear?”

“Yes, thanks to you, Aunt Emmy,” said Clorinda softly.

Many years ago I lived in a western country. My very first job was in the city and I was excited to go to work by public transport! I had never been employed before and my chances of travelling on a bus by myself had always been very slim. So, I was very happy with my new lifestyle!

I left home each morning in time to catch the 8.05 bus from the main road. One autumn morning I could see the bus approaching. I could also see an elderly lady walking with a lovely dog beside her. There were some youngsters behind her.

The bus arrived and we got on. Only eight passengers were permitted to travel standing. I was inside the bus when the conductor called, "Only eight standing passengers! Could the last one to get on please get off?" I saw those youngsters inside, right in front of me, and it occurred that they had jumped the queue!

I turned and saw the elderly lady with her dog about to get off. I moved quickly to get in front of her. I encouraged her to stay, knowing very well I would be late that morning, but it didn't bother me. It was only as I moved past her to get off the bus that I realized -- she was blind! Her dog was her guide dog!

Well, I eventually got to the office. After the day's work I went to the bus stand in front of my office to make the return journey. What a pleasant surprise! The lady and her dog were there! I was really pleased because I would get a better chance to speak with her. I started the conversation and she recognized my Asian accent! She asked if I was the same person who helped her that morning. Amazing! From there onwards it was one long happy conversation.

These beautiful memories are still fresh in my mind. By helping others, I feel content!
