One day, Zeng’s wife decided to go out for shopping, but her little son insisted on going with her to the market. Thinking that she would come back very soon, and that the naughty boy would bring her a lot oftrouble, she was unwilling to do so.

In order to persuade the boy to stay home, she told him, “Oh, come on, good boy, if you listen to Mom and then Mom will give you a present when I am back.”    

“What present are you going to give me, Mom?” asked the son.

“We haven’t eaten meat for a long time, so I will kill our pig and let you enjoy a big nice dinner.” The mother comforted the boy when it happened that their pig was wandering in front of the house. Just at that time, her husband came back and heard what she said. Thinking of the nice meal, the boy gave in.

Not very soon, the mother came back, but what she saw shocked her. It was her husband who had killed the only pig of the poor family.

“Why did you kill it? You know that it is very important for my family.” she scolded him.

“I did that just for your promise!” Mr. Zeng answered.

Mrs. Black was having a lot of trouble with her skin, so she went to see her doctor and had some test. The next day the doctor telephoned her to give her the list of things she should not eat. Mrs. Black careful wrote all the things down a piece of paper, which she then left it beside the telephone when she went out to a ladies’ meeting. When she got back home two hours late, she found her husband waiting for her. Carried a big basket full of food, she said, “Hello, dear. I’ve done all your shopping for you.” “Done all my shopping?” she asked in surprise, “But why did you know what I wanted?” “Well, when I got home, I found your shopping list beside the telephone,” answered her husband, “So I went down to the shop and bought everything you have written down.”

Three Umbrellas

Sally was a college student in London. She wanted to buy her mother a nice and useful birthday present, but not too expensive.

One day after a quick and simple lunch, she went shopping. Having looked for half an hour, she came across a shop selling umbrellas at a good price. So she decided to take one.

She thought, “Mom can carry it when she is wearing clothes of any color.” Then she bought a lovely black umbrella and took it to school with her until her class finished.

On her way home in the train that evening she felt hungry, so she went to the buffet car.  She left the black umbrella above her seat. But when she got back, she found it was gone! 

Sally burst into tears. The other passengers felt very sorry for her and asked what was wrong. When she explained the black umbrella she had bought for her mother had disappeared, and that she had to get off at the next station, the three other passengers asked her for her mother’s address so that they could send the umbrella to her in case someone returned it after Sally got off the train.

The next week, Sally got a letter from her mother saying “Thank you very much for your lovely presents, but why did you send me three black umbrellas?”
