　　Mrs. Brown had just put the dinner on the table when she heard a knock on the door. She was surprised because the postman and the milkman had already been, and she wasn't expecting any visitors. She went to the window to see who it was. A man was standing on the steps leading to the front door.

　　He was a tall and very strong man wearing an old coat and a big blackcap pulled forward over his eyes, so that it was difficult to see his face clearly. His shoes were old and dirty. He carried a small black box in one hand.

　　As she looked at him, Mrs. Brown remembered the stories, she had read in the newspaper about old ladies who opened the door to strangers, and were hit on the head and all their money was stolen. She felt rather frightened. “I'm not going to open the door,” she said to herself. “If I don't, perhaps he'll think there's no one in the house and he'll go away.” She stood still, trembling.
