Recycling

Increased population increases the need for natural resources and also increases waste products. Making a new useful product out of a waste product decreases(reduces)our need for natural resources. Recycling means using something over again after it has been used once.

Have you ever seen a piece of recycled paper? About one third of all the paper products made each year are made from waste paper. For example, recycled paper is usually used to make paper sacks. Recycling paper, such as newspapers, reduces the number of trees that must be cut each year to make new paper.

Each person wastes a lot of solid(固体的)waste. In the United States, the average(平均)is eight kilograms of waste per person each day. Most of the waste is rubbish. Finding places to dispose(处理)of solid waste is a major problem.

In many cities solid wastes are collected and the rubbish is burned in incinerator plants(焚化场). Air pollution control devices(设备)are used to prevent pollution. Heat produced in the burning may be used to produce electricity. Waste that is not burned is taken to a dump(垃圾堆). One kind of dump for the disposal of solid wastes is a sanitary landfill(废渣处理池). This method involves(包含)burying the wastes and bulldozing(平整)the soil over them. Parks, baseball fields, airports, and other developments may be built on completely filled landfills.

Recycling solid wastes decreases our need for methods of disposal. The metal in broken cars can be recycled and made into new steel. Worn-out rubber tires can be turned into new ones and used again. Plastics and other rubber products can be recycled. Metal cans and glass bottles can also be recycled. Increased recycling can help meet the increased demand for natural resources.

By recycling resources, people imitate(模仿)nature. Elements(元素)important to life are naturally recycled. Nothing lasts forever. Wood decays(腐烂), iron rusts(生锈), and concrete(混凝土)is worn away by wind and rain. All natural resources used by people finally go back into the air, water, and earth.

[ ]

A.solid wastes are poisonous

B.it is difficult to find places to dispose of solid wastes

C.the disposal process is too backward

D.we don't have enough manpower to dispose of solid wastes

4.Which of the following can NOT be called recycling?

[ ]

A.Making new paper from used paper.

B.Using worn-out rubber tires to make new ones.

If there is something that appears most frequently on Chinese dining tables, it is doufu—beancurd. Beancurd looks like soft cakes and it’s made from dried soybeans. Beancurd used to be considered a favourite of the poor because of its low cost. Beans have high yields (产量) every year with their short growing period and suitability for various soil both dry and wet.
Historical records show beancurd was invented by Liu An, Prince of Huainan and uncle of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty(206BC—220AD). He had a dream of finding the pill for longevity (长寿). He traveled all over the country and found soybeans, which looked much the same as gold in terms of colour. He collected soybeans, put them in the water and crushed them into pulp (浆). It got solidified (凝固) and became known as doufu. Although it’s not able to keep longevity, it’s really good for one’s health with high protein and low fat.
With a long history, beancurd is rooted deep in Chinese culture. People eat more meat and fish than beancurd. But they are encouraged to have beancurd every once in a while for it’s really good for health. Most Chinese people still keep beancurd as one of their favourite dishes.

That “Monday morning feeling” could be a crushing pain in the chest which leaves you sweating and gasping for breath. Recent research from Germany and Italy shows that heart attacks are more common on Monday mornings and doctors blame the stress of returning to work after the weekend break.
The risk of having a heart attack on any given day should be one in seven, but a six-year study helped by researchers at the Free University of Berlin of more than 2,600 Germans showed that the average person had a 20 percent higher chance of having a heart attack on a Monday than on any other day.
Working Germans are particularly not protected against attack, with a 33 percent higher risk at the beginning of the working week. Non-workers, by comparison, appear to be no more at risk on a Monday than any other day.
A study of 11,000 Italians proved 8 am on a Monday morning as the most stressful time for the heart, and both studies showed that Sunday is the least stressful day, with fewer heart attacks in both countries.
The findings could lead to a better understanding of what is the immediate cause of heart attacks, according to Dr Stefan Willich of the Free University. “We know a lot about long-term risk factors such as smoking and cholesterol(胆固醇)but we don’t know what actually causes heart attacks, so we can’t give clear advice on how to prevent them,” he said.
Monday mornings have a double helping of stress for the working body as it makes a rapid change from sleep to activity, and from the relaxing weekend to the pressures of work.
“When people get up, their blood pressure and heart rate go up and there are hormonal(内分泌)changes in their bodies,” Willich explained. “All these things can have an unfavourable effect in the blood system and increase the risk of a clot(血凝块)in the arteries(动脉)which will cause a heart attack.”
“When people return to work after a weekend off, the pace of their life changes. They have a higher workload, more stress, more anger and more physical activity,” said Willich.
